CBS This Morning’s Ratings Improve by Featuring Actual News

After years stymied in third place, CBS is finally beginning to experience growth in the a.m. CBS This Morning, which premiered in January 2012, is experiencing year-over-year ratings gains by focusing on tabloid free news, according to TV Guide

The year-to-year audience growth for King and coanchors Charlie Rose and Norah O'Donnell has been as high as 39 percent in recent weeks. With an average of 3 million viewers, CBS scored its best May-sweep morning-ratings performance since 1994. While well behind ABC's 5.7 million and NBC's 4.8 million viewers, the numbers indicate that CBS This Morning has effectively positioned itself to pick up disenchanted Today viewers who may find GMA too frothy. "People come up to me and say, 'You guys actually do news,'" says O'Donnell.

CBS is doing a very good job with it's morning show.

I've been touting the excellence of CBS THis Morning since the revamp with Rose, King and (then) Hill. While I miss Erica Hill, Norak O'Donell has been doing top notch work and it truly a first class program over the awful GMA and Today. So glad that the ratings are rising and viewers are choosing an intelligent choice in the morning news race.

Couldn't agree more. Never understood why CBS's This Morning is always last. The news coverage during the first half is great and the segments/interviews are all well done. GMA looks a bit amateurish at times and Today appears cheap and cold. Miss Hill too but O'Donnel isn't bad, she's just no Hill. I get a robotic feel from O'Donnel as opposed to Hill's friendly "I feel like I know you" touch.

They have a great format. I like seeing the news...not the crap that Today shovels. I hope they continue to grow and that Today continues to bleed.

Also not a fan of GMA. Go CBS!

I've wanted to like this show, because I like Gayle King, but I've found it hard to engage with. I'll give it another try now that I know the format is different. Though I watch it everyday, Today just doesn't do it for me and I stopped watching GMA when Dan Hartman and Nancy Desault left!!

I occasionally watch GMA because Sam Champion was our local weatherman and I'm so happy to see him on national TV now.

I was thinking the same thing recently that CBS does focus more on actual news. Good for them. Norah O'Donnell is pretty easy on the eyes for me but I dont know if there's actual chemistry between her and Charlie Rose. Doesn't seem like there is although, I'm probably reading it wrong.

I do think you could have hard news and entertainment. It just seems like there's more entertainment than there is hard news on GMA and Today.
