Top 5 Bad-Ass Women of Summer TV
No. 1: The Women of Game of Thrones
As anyone who listens to the Daytime Confidential podcast knows, one of my Top 5 lists just wouldn’t be complete without a tie. Who better to tie at No. 1 than the women of HBO’s Game of Thrones?
No single TV series features more bad-ass women than Game of Thrones. From the mother of dragons, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), to Winterfell’s mother wolf, Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley), I watched in rapture as the women of Game of Thrones went to epic lengths to protect those they love, reclaim what was lost, keep power, act honorably or seek revenge.
Daenerys Targaryen, with her dragons and growing army, brought her foes to their knees, while freeing slaves as she marched towards the sea and her eventual return to the Seven Kingdoms.
Catelyn Stark made her last stand trying to protect her son, the King of the North, Robb Stark (Richard Madden), when they were betrayed during the Red Wedding. She never knew how close she came to reuniting with her daughter Arya (Maisie Williams), who made her first kill during Season 3.
How can we forget the political intrigue of Kings Landing, where Olenna Tyrell (Dianna Rigg) and Cersie Lannister (Lena Headey) went toe-to-toe with the most powerful men in the seven kingdoms, using words and wit as sharp as daggers to the heart? Or how Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) and Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) swam in the life threatening shark pool that is Joffrey’s (Jack Gleeson) castle.
Then there was the blunt, but equally bad-ass Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) and Ygritte (Rose Leslie). Brienne faced down captors, bears and somehow started to redeem Kingslayer Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). Ygritte was so bad-ass she shot the man she loved, Jon Snow (Kit Harington), with arrows as he fled his captors.
