Why does what is happening to Michelle Stafford remind us of what happened to Genie Francis on General Hospital under Jill Farren Phelps? Melodie goes off on Carmine’s twisted spiral and the kidnapping of Lauren. Is Steve Burton the star of The Young and the Restless? Dylan is getting more screen time, bigger sets and his own love songs, while Y&R vets are withering on the vine. The DC gang unleashes the dragons on the state of The Young and the Restless. Adrienne caused chaos in Salem, when she turned in the video of Sami attacking Detective Bernardi. EJ threatened Adrienne. Justin warned EJ and Sami about revenge Greek-style. Brady fell for Kristen yet again. Kristian Alfonso re-inked with Days of Our Lives. Jillian isn’t happy that Alice switched her vote and helped AJ beat Tracy. FrankenTodd underwent surgery. Is Emma Samms returning to General Hospital? Jack Wagner claimed his tweets were approved by God. Michael tried to get Brad to spill the truth about Britch’s baby. Does Roger Howarth need to be put on the backburner? Prospect Park agreed to give residuals to the crews of All My Children and One Life to Live. Just how well are One Life to Live and All My Children doing on OWN? Is One Life to Live too disjointed and missing storyline beats? Would getting the Buchanan clan back under the Buchanan mansion roof help improve drama and continuity? Hope meddled in Quinn, Bill, Liam and Wyatt’s lives. Regan actually approved of Hope's actions for a change, while Jamey Giddens wanted Quinn to claw her. Caroline’s latest scheme was exposed, as Room 8 prepares to jump to the web. I don’t think this was about him not feeling “special enough,” nor do I think he necessarily meant that he expected a Frisco & Felicia reunion. This narrative (his feelings about his stint for the 50th) has been going on for quite some time and what he (Jack)has most often discussed, explicitly, is the element of Frisco’s arc that involved Frisco and Maxie’s relationship. He expressed gratitude for being able to revisit the F&F element, but when his arc ended, it was the father/daughter element that he considered to be the missed opportunity. The idea that Frank and Ron are to be lauded for simply bringing back an inconic character, but writing an exit that undermined everything they had written prior (during the 10-episode arc) should be called out. That ending didn’t track with the strides that were made during Frisco and Maxie’s relationship for that brief period of time. In my opinion, the end undermined all the trust Frisco had worked to build and didn’t connect with the story as *they* breadcrumbed it. As a diehard F&Fer, I can also say that with a reunion of those characters off the table, there’s still a way to end a couple that doesn’t involve a public humiliation (that public proposal was definitely out of charcter) and a mean twisting of “Lady of My Heart” and what it means to those characters’ story and to their fans and spinning that to be pro Mac, especially after his laughable ventriloquist act. Characters that don’t even know Frisco were laughing at his expense after he left– you can’t tell me that wasn’t someone’s agenda. It felt shot through vendetta. If they didn’t want Jack on for more than 10 episodes, that’s their call to make, but it was spun to the media that he was only available for 10 episodes, which just wasn’t true. He said in numerous interviews that the limited arc was their call, not his. Why the duplicity there? If there was any part of this that was done (as has been suggested) because of what Kristina Wagner could or could not handle, then I’d just like to remind everyone that this is a professional context–and for as often as she’s on (next to never) and what she brings when she is (one step above a prop), that’s simply ridiculous. Surely she’s not enough of a commodity to these guys to have them miss out on what Jack could bring because of her own insecurities? Did she miss the fact that with him there she suddenly had some real lines and some real craft work to do–and that she delivered because Jack Wagner *always* raises her game? Did she miss the fact that with him back she was on as much as, if not more than, she had been before he came back? She went back to being a footnote after he left–this farce of a wedding they have planned for her and mac notwithstanding. Or does Ms. Wagner (not Malandro as Jamey called her) like saying gripping lines like “I’ll call 911″? As for Frisco being a deadbeat–He was written that way off screen because Jack Wagner did other things–unlike his former wife. Frisco, as he was written when present was nothing like this person they’ve created off camera. For that matter, Anna Devane and Robert Scoprio are equally guilty of being deadbeats, but the sanctimonious Mac gives them a pass there. Odd. You don’t bring back a character for the 50th to do anything other than redeem him or her– you don’t double down on what was done by a regime most people loathed. And GH’s writing, as I observed it, when I watched for Jack’s return is pedantic, elliptical, fragmented, and an embarrassment to the art. So, If Jack did indicate that, I cosign him fully. Log in to Reply Cornfed July 31, 2013 Bravo Jamey, i LOVED your tribute/rant of Santa Barbara on the podcast…and yes it WAS before its time, and damn don’t i feel old thinking it was 29 years ago that overrated/lackluster Robin Wright was the “lead” ingenue, only to be usurped by Marcy Walker very soon after! I’m almost thinking you saw my comment the other day when i mentioned “you’d never see leads like Lionel & Augusta on a soap anymore”! Anyway, i loved it. And now i know a bit more about why you’ll cut some slack to certain shows. I never knew how u got around that but now i do. Still listening…i came on to hear about The Staff! Log in to Reply Cornfed July 31, 2013 Now getting to your Kelly/Joe Perkins shoutout! Wow, i actually did not hear about Paul Rauch dying…or don’t remember. I so needed to laugh and your banter on this podcast was beyond entertaining and of course insightful. I’m still wiping my eyes from crying as I was laughing so hard. You’re simply the best!!! Log in to Reply bobbyew July 31, 2013 Getting ready for the laughter. lol Can’t wait. Log in to Reply janel22 July 31, 2013 I love your podcast you had me rolling I agree with Luke I do think the Buchcanans family should all be in one place if not all some but OLTL storylines are over the place they really needs to fix storylines the actor that play Jack he needs to go I’m sorry he cannot act his storyline with his teacher is good but they need a better actor AMC been good love Angie and David friendship would love to see them hook up but I kinda like that a man and woman can be just friends without bring sex invovled love Zach and Miranda scenes but I want my Bianca on screen with a storyline and love life I wouldn’t mind if Bianca and Jane hook up because Jane needs a storyline but I do think they need a younger writer to write for the teens because it’s been horrible they really need to explain why this Hunter kid keeps bullying Miranda and really Miranda you are a Kane and top off that your Uncle Zach is there tell him about Hunter and he will take care of it love Colby and Cassandra scenes but wouldn’t it be better to have Bianca in this storyline Y&R has been terrible I can’t take another scene with Dylan loved Steve Burton but your character is dull it would’ve been great if he was tied to a core character hate that they are turning Carmine into a villian this storyline would be so epic with Michael/Lauren/Carmine having Lauren torn between the two and then have Avery into mix because I think Avery and Michael would be hot love character of Avery she just boring with Nick to me I would just give Sharon a brain tumor and put her back with Nick. Here My Wishful Storyline after they laid character of Katherine to rest she will be truly miss I will bring back the characters of Mac and Jt see Steve Burton would’ve been great as JT and Tamara Braun as Mac or different actors to played them I will have Katherine leave part of her company to Jill and Mac and have Mac decide to turn part of the company into a chairitable foundation by invest into a older bedroom line with Nikki at the helm also a younger bedroom line and bring Adrienne Frantz as Amber to design bedrooms lines and profit and proceeds go to MS and Mac hire Kevin to do all the tech work and Jill decide to use her assets from Jabot and Fenmore and have Jack invest in Chelsea and Chloe line and Victor found out about this and decide use Nikki line to steal Jabot and while Billy and Victoria are close to getting back together Victor decide to use Billy past relationship with Mackenzie by having Mac and Billy working together all the while trying to get JT and Victoria back together and Jill sees Billy and Mac growing closer and doesn’t like this and decide to interfere and we have Jill vs Mac again with Billy in the middle oh the good old days Days been great best soap on air to me BB Loved Quinn cursing Hope out about interfere with her family I would have love if Quinn slap Hope but I have to say Bill is like Sonny because get a kid you didn’t know exist but I’m looking forward with this triangle with Liam/Hope/Wyatt even though I want Wyatt for Steffy but if the actress who play Steffy won’t do fulltime there are great actress out there to play Steffy I can think of two Rachel Mevlin and Shelley Hennsing GH I have an question even though I don’t mind the character of Franco and I understand why they bring hiim back because he connected to Quatermaines and Sonny Carly and Sam and wanted to keep Roger Hogwart in Laura Wright character orbit but if they decide to listen to the fans and killed him off but wanted to keep Roger Hogwart would you mind if he played Liz brother Steve and we found out that Steve is really Jason twin brother and Franco was really Heather son and not Steve and pair Steve with Carly because Steve did had a thing for Carly back in the day when Tamara Braun was in the role so when you read the comments of this podcast can you tweet me your answer about my question my twitter is @aleana24 thank you Log in to Reply soapjunkie88 August 1, 2013 Amazing podcast. As for Y&R, Angelica McDaniel needs to have a meeting with Sony and make a change at Y&R. Get a new writing team or a complete new regime. This show needs saving from the big bosses. Y&R was once known as the golden standard, with brilliant stories and outstanding actors. At the moment it’s a show with stupid story-plots, full of recasts and newbies, while vets are mostly off-screen. Beloved characters are a shadow of their former selfs. DAYS is amazing and I love the story with Adrienne and Sami. I hope they keep that rivalry going. Still love Kristen and will enjoy Eileen Davidson as long as we still have her on that show. Daniel/Jennifer has become a bad footnote that still needs fixing but otherwise I’m pretty happy with DAYS these days. GH still has to get rid of FrankenTodd and needs to take a good look on it’s cast and balance it a bit. B&B is fun. Always entertaining these days and even the younger generation is working. I still can’t stand Hope talking about yet another one of her weddings but whatever. LOL Thanks Jamey for the Santa Barbara tribute. What an awesome show that was! Also, thanks for bringing the Performer of the Week back. Missed it!!! Log in to Reply cubsgirl August 1, 2013 Shocker that Y&R has become The Steve Burton Hour. I saw that one coming the minute he was hired. And for the record I have never bought that “I want to spend time with my family” as the reason he left GH. I am with Jamey about my overall feel about GH. Even with the bad stuff on GH, I am still entertained. I know there are people on other boards slamming everything, but I still find myself entertained each day. The only stories I haven’t been able to get through are Spixie (but I never liked them) and TJ/Molly/Rafe/Taylor. Sure Franco is being whitewashed and changed because of a brain tumor and RH is playing it WAY over the top, but still entertains the heck out of me. I would rather have an hour of entertainment anytime. While I still I am enjoying GH, B&B is the top soap for me right now. I never cared for Darin Brooks on Days and thought he was overrated. But I was wrong. On B&B he is getting a decent story and thought he was great playing out the scenes of finding out who is father is. It actually made me interested in Hope/Liam again as you read the writing on the wall they are creating a new triangle with them and Wyatt. Log in to Reply ChrisGa August 1, 2013 Great revisit of Santa Barbara, one of my Top 3 soaps of all time. Damn, those were the days…. DAYS continues to be on total fire(and if they continue writing story the way they have, they’ll easily survive Eileen Davidson’s exit). They’re doing just about everything right–and, yes, even Dannifer has become tolerable thanks to great work from Melissa Reeves, Jen Lilley and even Casey Moss–and hopefully the continued good word-of-mouth will translate to continued ratings upticks. As for Y&R, I just don’t even know anymore. With the exception of stellar acting from Peter Bergman and Hunter King, the paternity story has ended up an anti-climatic fail. Sharon’s character dismantling is now complete–yeah, I know, every hardcore Y&R fan(and FYI, I’ve been watching since ’80 so I’m not a newbie viewer)thinks this is the beginning of Sharon’s rehabilitation. My point here is that it should’ve NEVER come to this. EVER. Once Sharon was diagnosed as bipolar, THAT should’ve been the beginning of the character’s rehab arc(and JG seem to really lead everyone to believe that it was). It’s obvious that the last two regimes have no interest in seeing this character grow beyond her long-standing place as this show’s perpetual needy, dependent doormat. I gotta say I’m about two or three more really tired episodes away from giving up on this show. Log in to Reply EricasBlackSon August 1, 2013 Yay! A podcast! Finally! Where the HELL have you people been? Don’t you know I’m addicted to these podcasts and require them every other day? Jamey and Jillian, you did a way better job of not interrupting Luke. (wink, wink, jiggle, jiggle.) But I’d much rather have you there interrupting and cracking me up than not at all. That was a great fight over cheap soap sets, guys! I loved the Capwell mansion but I always wondered why those rich folks didn’t have a security system. Gina used to sneak in there at will. Btw, does anybody remember when Justin Deas cursed on network television? Anyway, thank you for the good, long, pod. Log in to Reply MsAgentProvocateur1 August 1, 2013 Jillian is spot on about how Phyllis should’ve exited the G.C. landscape:’ Can you imagine that arrest scene, Detective Chavez, escorted by Paul with Christine laying the groundwork, slapping the handcuffs on Phyllis and arresting her at the MS benefit, in front of half the town?? Slow-motion and everything! That would’ve been strong. Instead, we get ‘meh’. And I agree w/ Mel too. Carmine (Marco Dapper) should not be (mis)used this way. This is ridiculous. I’ve been saying for months now that Josh knows how to begin storylines well enough, but is lousy at resolving them. I mentioned before too, that Lauren should’ve been wavering between the two men, the way Margo on ATWT wavered between Hal Munson and Tom Hughes. But Y&R insists on making everything so damn simple, with no hint of complexity. Just. boring. As for Sharon, about 3 years ago, before I joined this board, I mentioned to some Y&R fans that I thought Sharon should have a brain tumor, and I was poo-pooed. So now, what do I have to say to those people? Like the kids on my block in Harlem used to say back in the day: Whatevah! Hate to say but I disagree w/Luke on OLTL. Agree with Jillian again, that Luke’s being too hasty– could it be that Matthew is saying it doesn’t bother him that Destiny and Jeffrey will be dating, only for him to change his mind later and decide that he doesn’t like it? I don’t see a problem with Matthew being conflicted about both Destiny & Danielle. And I never want to hear about OLTL’s sets again! (LOL) Look at clips of ATWT in the mid 80s (’84-’85) and you will see some cheap azz sets but some magnificent storytelling! It don’t matta, Luke! Now OLTL does need a very strong storyline, unfortunately the Tattoo storytelling involving Victor Jr. and Todd–I have a feeling that was supposed to be it and for obvious reasons that can’t/won’t work. Hopefully these new writers will pull the loose threads together because the scenes individually are well written. I think if OLTL had a really great umbrella storyline, it would set things in motion. No in depth discussion of AMC. Such a pity, since the show has been so good lately. Oh well. Disappointed, I must admit. Still an entertaining podcast. Log in to Reply sillytee August 1, 2013 ok i love the dc podcasts but my god, this whole fixing the set thing with OLTL should have been cut!!! Log in to Reply Ms 45 August 1, 2013 Regarding Natalie’s crappy apartment: there was a storyline several years ago where she put all her money into a trust for her children — she cannot access that cash. I think she lives off her forensic tech salary. Bo and Nora’s home is hardly lavish either. Log in to Reply liason4real August 1, 2013 Natalie’s money is indeed in a trust for her children. I’ve always liked that Natalie had a job no matter what was going on in her crazy life! Log in to Reply Nk3play2 August 1, 2013 Days is on fire in every way!!!! No explantion is needed. LoL yeah, those Catholics in Salem are a bit hypocritical. It’s sad to say, I’m not too upset about Drake Hogestyn leaving. He’s never impressed me much. Hope will not get a damn storyline so they need to stop talking about it. While Wyatt as Bill’s horny oldest son is creating drama, I think it’s a bit unoriginal. Darin Brooks looks like he could be Thorne’s long lost. It would’ve pit the Spencers vs. the Forresters with a Logan in the middle. LMAO at Jamey’s Deborah Cox impression. I’m actually gonna watch Room8; it will have two more characters according to the promo. OLTL is pointless at this point. The set is not the issue, the writing is. The only reason I’m still watching is for Corbin Bleu, Kelly Missal and Andrew Trischitta (SHOCKER I KNOW). Destiny NEEDS to be recast, when she and Dani go into that argument, and her voice went up five octaves, I was thinking out loud, “WHAT THE FUCK?! Why is she screaming like that?!” I think they should squash Destiny and Jeffrey, and put Jeffrey with Dani. Don’t subject Corbin Bleu to that screeching woman. She’s gorgeous but she sucks. As for Jack and his teacher, I think Andrew Trischitta has definitely improved; he actually seems like he’s remembered his lines instead of sounding like he’s reading from a cue card in the back of the room. Natalie grew up in a damn trailer park, she doesn’t need much space!!! AMC I’m enjoying so much that it’s scary. Debbi Morgan is doing the damn thing, and she BETTER be a contender for the daytime emmys next year. Jamey talks about Santa Barbara and Another World so well that I actually miss them, and I’ve never even seen them. I’ve actually looked at some clips, the reveal about Channing’s death, and it was epic. @LukeKerr, I advise u 2 quit while ur behind next time. AND Luke, Days’s sets have not ever improved!!!! Ur just blinded by the amazing writing. Frank Valentini need to take a page from Jamey’s books and tells his employees to stop fucking because they’ve got quite a few couples from behind the scenes since they’ve started. Jamey is ur so shady about that comment about leading viewers to believe gay actors love their leading ladies. Onto GH, I’m enjoying everything EXCEPT FRANCO!!! I’m even enjoying Silas now. Roger Howarth’s portrayal of “Jason” proves just how much of a JOKE the Jason Morgan character was. If you watch TV for morals, STOP!!!! Grow the fuck up, it’s a damn tv show. That’s why these shows are dying, because they have not evolved with the rest of television. Jack Wagner can go fuck himself, he’s a self righteous prick. If he actually had a problem with how Frisco was being written, he should’ve stepped up and talked about it in 1995 when it first started. That fucking jerk collected a paycheck for years on B&B when they did nothing with him. Come on John Stamos, maybe if you would’ve done the cameo, they would’ve brought u back and given u a story. I wonder if Demi would’ve done it had her daughter been given that role? DAMN @JameyGiddens, I didn’t know u were holding in all that information about GH’s plans during the anniversary. What else are u not saying???!!! Like I’ve said b4, Y&R has positive aspects. However, I am disgusted with how the paternity storyline has gone. Speaking as a straight man, I developed a bit of a man crush on Daniel Romalotti when he told off Nick and Avery. I am so sick of them dragging out Cane and Lily’s inevitable doom; Jill Farren Phelps knows how to destroy a couple, so hurry the hell up. I refuse to watch them sacrifice Summer for a no chemistry pairing with Kyle when she and Fenmore still have amazing chemistry. YES, Michelle Stafford is getting the Genie Francis GH treatment. If they really wanted to recast Victoria and Lily (I’m assuming that’s the other actress u were talking about Jamey) they could do it. They almost did it with Elizabeth Webber on GH. However, though it backfired with Rebecca Herbst as it should’ve, if you destroy Victoria and Lily to the point where even die hard fans hate them, a recast would be very easy. Instead of turning Carmine into a psycho, they should’ve recast Eden Baldwin with Brittany Underwood and had her and Carmine hook up!!! Unfortunately, I don’t think Marco Dapper is that popular among fans because of his character. I am still pissed about the way they insinuate Cane into the Chancellors orbit. I hate all the NEWMANS except Noah, Summer and Adam. I like Chelsea but I can’t watch her scenes because of that boring ass Dylan. And I agree, Dylan’s friend, Stitch is more engaging than Dylan. The character of Dylan should’ve been replaced by Keemo Volien FUCKING ABBOT!!! Jack’s M.I.A. (Missing in Asian) son who we haven’t seen or heard from in years. He could’ve been the man who broke up Avery’s marriage and came to town and pretended to be the father of Adam’s child with Chelsea. And for the first time you’d have an Abbott taking a child from a Newman and you’d perpetuate the epic feud that is the Newmans vs. the Abbotts. Roger Howarth as Dylan would be more interesting then Steve Burton as Dylan. I’m just gonna say it, I fucking miss Maria Arena Bell and I don’t give a damn who doesn’t like it. Performer of the Week for me is Bryan Craig and Darin Brooks. Craig is really impressing me as Morgan Corinthos. And Darin Brooks explains himself. Even if we look at the episode counts, it’s pretty even all the way around for everyone. Whatever. I disagree on that. Anyway, off of Y&R because I’m tired of taking up for it when no matter WHAT the show does, it’s gonna “suck” in this community. For B&B, I guess I’m enjoying Wyatt and Quinn’s intro. It seems really rushed. I don’t like the fact that Wyatt totally now hates his mom, and has clung onto Bill, who wanted him aborted in the first place, but then again, its pretty realistic that some people would react that way. It just kind of bothers me. Caroline is still kind of a hoot, even though that waterbed scene was the campiest thing I’ve seen on B&B in a little while. So now suddenly Brooke and Bill don’t “love” each other anymore, and don’t have that undeniable attraction that they once had, all because Katie found out? Well…I guess. But I’m loving badass Katie. GH…horrible. It wouldn’t be as bad if I felt it was actually being called out for how it’s written. But since everyone adores GH and loves EVERYTHING about the show except FrankenTodd, then I guess I’ll just go ahead with MY opinion: EVERY single criticism about how horrible Y&R is is exhibited on GH. I was there from day one and watched it shut down. I am not exactly sure what happened toward the end but someone got really stupid. If they had created characters that spoke to their new star’s strengths, the show might have survived. First off Eileen Davidson should have been held back and been a recast for Eden. She was absolutely not right for Kelly Capwell but she would have killed as Eden. Second of all my beloved Kim Zimmer on SB as a middle class cop? Why not make her trailer trash (Lola) that shot at some food in Oklahoma and up through the ground came bubbling crude…. oil that is. She moves in next door to the Capwells and CC has to be civil because he is shipping her oil around but he doesn’t like it. Then along comes Jack Wagner as Jack Lola’s baby daddy who comes sniffing around for some of her money. That would have been great. Instead those actors were written in insipid roles and insipid stories. This show could have survived Marcy Walker and A Martinez’s absence but that is not what happened. And I agree that Dylan SUCKS. Dylan’s story SUCKS. ALL of Dylan’s stories have sucked. But the guy is not eating the show. It is not The Dylan McAvoy show. This week, how many times have we seen Dylan? ZERO. Last week, we saw him maybe 2 episodes. Same for the week before that. How is that the guy eating the show??? If he sucks, he SUCKS…but I just disagree that the whole show revolves around Dylan or that it’s HIS show. And what I’m saying has nothing to do with what was said on the podcast because I don’t even listen to the Y&R portions. What I said was based on comments I’m seeing from people on this site. It’s not HIS show…he’s not eating it. And things are pretty balanced. Is the show great? HELL NO!!!! But it’s no worse than a couple other soaps, and when it comes to balance…it’s not that bad. In 2 hot minutes this guy had his own set, his own best friend, meeting every female all over town, etc. You have to know Jill Farren Phelps LEGENDARY, CONTROVERSIAL 25 YEAR HISTORY to fully grasp how this shit is so predictable, and so disgusting. As for GH, u must be reading the wrong boards b/c the tide turned along time ago with most GH’ers imo. They have all the complaints you listed above plus 10 more! I called that from the very day a vampire story *sucked* the life out of the show during Feb. sweeps as Genie Francis was about to appear. I’d say both GH AND Y/R are problematic right now, tho at least Y/R isn’t camping it up every other minute. Jamey sees it more as the glass half full (“the vets can’t be on every day on GH”) and that this is the best we’re gonna get. And that being said, CarToony is nowhere near a death sentence as having Phelps helming a show, IMO. Edited: By the time i got my dang post finished, Stoney already commented on Dullen. So at least he understands the fury ppl have for this character. It’s not JUST that the storytelling is shitty, but WHO IS SACRIFICED in order to tell his story. The propping of the character and how the show loses all momentum when he’s on. Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon August 1, 2013 Best. Podcast. Ever. My sides are hurting from laughing so much and I’m only half-way through. Jamey, “AMERICA IS STUPID!” I yelled the very same thing when my fifteen-year-old self discovered there was such a thing as the Neilsen ratings and that Santa Barbara was at the very bottom. Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens August 1, 2013 I am so beyond over this Y&R vs. GH thing. I don’t judge Y&R against GH or vice versa. I judge all the soaps against their best incarnation, but since it keeps coming up, here goes: Y&R vs. GH Vets Tracy Quartermaine was an 80’s and 90’s era bitch goddess on GH. Jill Abbott was an 80’s and 90’s era bitch goddes on Y&R. Today, Tracy is in the fight for her life for ELQ. She’s also fighting Laura for the spot as Luke’s No. 1 Stunner, while dealing and scheming with interlopers like Ava. Jill Abbott is showing up at Billy’s restaurant to have lunch with Neil, or wandering around Genoa City to help her MAB-sanctioned insta-family, the Fenmore-Baldwins. ELQ has always been what drove Tracy. Jill just learned the Fenmore-Baldwins were her relations a few years ago. Cane isn’t even her son, yet she has scene after scene talking to him, talking about him to Neil, worrying about his marriage. She went months without even seeing Billy. She still doesn’t have any scenes with Jack. Laura is married to Scotty, her childhood sweetheart, yet still can’t shake Luke. She’s also relaunching Deception with Lucy. What are Victor and Nikki doing? Oh right, absolutely nothing. GH uses veterans on recurring more than Y&R does the ones they have on contract. Speaking of contracts. The excuse is given that Jess is on recurring, because she moved away from L.A. Steve Burton doesn’t live in L.A. and they somehow manage to write story for him. Felicia and Mac are planning their second wedding. Who is Paul Williams romantically involved with on Y&R? Oh right, no one. He became a cop simply to be able to arrest Michael, Lauren and/or Kevin over and over again. Newbies Britt is the daughter of Cesar Faison, one of the most notorious supervillains in GH history. She is targeting the family of Robin Scorpio, the daughter of Faison’s ancient foes, Robert and Anna. Britt’s way into Robin’s life is Dr. Patrick Drake, son of legendary 80’s hearthrob Noah Drake. On Y&R, there’s some girl named Melanie accusing Adam first of sexual harassment and now rape. Is she the daughter of Victor’s old secretary Eve Howard? Maybe Leanna Love’s love child? Nope, she’s just played by an actress who JFP used on General Hospital. Dylan McAvoy is now a principle lead. Is he a Newman? Abbott? Chancellor? Brooks? No. He’s some guy who is a plumber/architecht/Afghanistan war vet/pal of Sharon’s brat/proprieter of Crimson Lights whose only real connection in town, or to this show’s mythology is he once had an off screen affair with Avery and thinks he knocked up Chelsea, both relative newcomers. One of the first things Cartini did was rename Jake’s The Floating Rib, an iconic GH hangout from the glory days. Did Y&R bring back Ginas’? The Colonnade Room? No, they created a dive bar for Nick and had cosmetics heir Billy Abbott open an On The Border chain. Ava Jermone is a “newbie” played by Daytime Emmy winner Maura West. Her name, Jerome, has caused raised eyebrows since the day she arrived in town, because…it’s the same last name as the mob family who once ruled Port Charles with an iron fist. I don’t recall any McAvoys in GC prior to the current front burner one. Michael and Morgan Corinthos are the sons of core characters. They are in the middle of a love triangle, tied to ELQ’s corporate power struggle, etc. What is Noah Newman doing? Absolutely nothing. Even Franco, a character I loathe, is being used to drive story for ELQ (another element of GH that JFP and Guza ignored, causing fans to cry foul) and for Carly and Sam. Is it good story? Eh. But it is story, tied to the history of the show, and being used to bring back classic elements. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’d take a bad Jabot story right about now over no Jabot story at all. Oh but wait, there is a Jabot story. It involves Lily and NuAbby (the head of the division, Jesus take the Final Draft) sipping lattes at Dylan’s Light, while gossiping over boys. I’ve watched Y&R for 31 years. I know it like the crack of my natural black ass. This is not a good representation of it’s history. I’ve only watched GH for 20 odd years. To me, it is a campier, heightened version of all of the classic eras of the show, with a healthy does of spoofing the genre’s more ludicrious aspects (and yes, all soaps have ludicrious aspects and always have, even those written by Agnes and Bill). Log in to Reply stoney07 August 1, 2013 I agree IOWA…. If I had to get rid of one person on Y&R right now, it would hands down be Steve Burton. Well, first it would be JFP…but then it would be Steve Burton. I don’t like his acting style, and his storyline is boring to me. I think really the reason I cut for Y&R soooo much on this site is not necessarily because I think it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. It’s just that I feel sometimes there are double standards. GH has tons of vets on their show, but they are never seen. Y&R still has all their vets pretty much, and they are at least SEEN, even if they aren’t driving story. Nikki isn’t driving story (tho her MS SHOULD be driving story)…but aside from Nikki, I can’t think of any other vets that we hardly see at all. Meanwhile, GH gets the “glass half full” thing, while Y&R just sucks at writing for the vets. It doesn’t make sense to me. It’s not that I hate GH and LOVE Y&R. It’s just a habit for me to root for the underdog, and there’s no denying that Y&R has LONNNG been the underdog for some soap bloggers. I just never fully understood why. What is classified as “bad writing” for one show gets great reviews for another show…no matter how ridiculous the story may be. And I DO understand that Y&R and GH are two totally different types of soap. One is more realistic psychological drama while the other is over the top action packed (now campy) drama…but ugh. Whatever…lol. I respect everyone and their opinions and I hope I don’t come off as telling anyone how to think or what to type, because that’s not my style. Really, I just like to debate on this subject. Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens August 1, 2013 Another point on GH vs. YR re: newbies How many years did people log into this site mad as hell that JFP and Guza had decimated the actual hospital on GH? Newbies Sabrina, Britt, Felix, Brad and Ellie all work where? At General Hospital. We all know if Guza and JFP were still running this show (and I liked Guza’s writing), Sabrina would have been an FBI operative who Sonny ended up screwing. Britt would have been a lady mob boss, who Sonny ended up screwing and Jason and/or Michael ended up killing. Felix would have been a dayplayer thug, who kidnapped Sam and/or Liz before Jason killed him (Sorry, Sonny don’t do dudes. Brad would have been a henchman for Britt, who Jason shot dead on the docks. Ellie would have been a sociopath, who filled a vial filled with Hepatitis, before trying to stab Maxie in BJ’s beating heart. I’m watching GH like I use to watch AMC, pre-Chuck Pratt era, which is everyday, for all the reasons you stated. I don’t even have to check a recap to see if I want to watch or for which parts to fast-forward. I end up watching the whole hour and it’s been quite a while since I did that with any soap. I have to ask though. Considering the example you wrote if Guza was still writing GH, which appears to be some tired and outright ludicrous writing, what is it about Guza’s writing do you like? Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens August 2, 2013 what is it about Guza’s writing do you like? *** I loved so much of Guza’s stuff. The Jax/Brenda/Sonny/Lily endgame. The introduction of Stefan and Nikolas Cassadine (he created Nikolas, and co-created Stefan with Karen Harris). Carly Corinthos as played by Tamara Braun was one of my all-time fave soap heroines. I ate up every single bit of CarSon back then. Prior to that, Carly (Sarah Brown) and Sonny’s affair began when he was head writing. Ate that up too. Two people who couldn’t stand one another, betraying the man they truly loved — Jason. Later adding Alcazar to the mix. The epic 2002 return of my GIRL, the baddest bitch, Brenda Barrett. Robin’s return to save Jason. The Port Charles hotel fire. Jason and Faith Roscoe’s shoot out in the church. Nasty ass Manny Ruiz terrorizing Sam. Liz/Jason/Sam. Maxie screwing a drugged out Lucky in Liz’s bed. All of that was good soap to me. Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens August 2, 2013 It don’t matter b/c for my personal tastes *** I think this is the clincher for a lot of people. Many of the people who are upset with GH have said ad nauseum they don’t like camp or over-the-top writing. Long before these GH vs. Y&R debates started, it has been well documented I love me some campy soaps. James E. Reilly is one of my favorite soap scribes of all times. I think Ron has a similar style. To many people, that is a cut down, for me, a person who was hooked to Days of Our Lives in the 90’s (When it was the most profitable soap airing in daytime), I consider it a compliment to him. Y&R is treated to a higher standard, because unlike the other soaps, it doesn’t have multiple incarnations. It has been Bill Bell and the rest of ‘em. We were spoiled by Bill having the complete autonomy to give us his vision for the show for it’s first three decades. I loved it when Kay Alden and Jack Smith inherited the reins. I never got why people bitched so much about the sperm caper (but then I do like camp!) LML, I felt was terrible, though looking back on it now, she wrote killer stuff for Dru and Neil. I still howl when I watch the clip of Dru ho-checking Carmen Mesta at that party. Maria came on and spent a good year undoing all the dumb stuff LML had done, and we were thrilled. Then she started telling her own stories and they were terrible. The thing about camp, is it has to be good camp. The Chipmunk, So Long, Sister Killer. Kay and Murphy in that plane. That was all bad camp. I had high hopes for JFP and Josh, but it feels like they are trying to do a new soap, a spin off of Y&R. Log in to Reply Cornfed August 2, 2013 @Stoney — YES, the debating is awesome! I’m glad ur here to state the “glass is half full” POV of Y/R…To be continued Jamey, EXCELLENT detailed post, can you bullet point? You make some great points, and by far i always believe Y/R was in worse shape. Comparing Genie’s end to Stafford’s end on the podcast was GENIUS…and then adding in Frankie Frame was the icing on the cake. JFP is SO short-sighted, among other things. I’d LOVE to see Jill’s butt on the line if Marco Dapper is written off — dare we hope? You make great points with GH, but you know what? It don’t matter b/c for my personal tastes, I don’t feel Kristen Alderson and Roger Howarth are worth breaking a blood vessel over. JMO. Just not a fan of Howarth’s…i’ve tried. Going from TSJ to him on OLTL was just torturous, a transition i could not endure. The former, methody; the latter, pure camp. IMO. I can’t handle Easton, Howarth and Alderson being shoved into the foreground, as someone else said, “fitting a circle into a square peg”?, i paraphrase. Your knowledge of Santa Barbara and Y/R ROCKS! Log in to Reply Nk3play2 August 2, 2013 Like I said b4, Y&R usually specific parts that I enjoy, but not much right now. I was enjoying the paternity storyline until that idiotic revelation that Sharon altered the test. I despise Kyle, Cane, Dylan, Victoria, Victor, Nicholas, and NuAbby. I am so sick of them dragging out Lane, KILL THEM ALREADY. Victoria NEEDS to be recast, along with Kyle and Abby. I cannot sit through this inevitable period of Kyle and Summer looking at each other when there is NO CHEMISTRY. Summer still has HOT chemistry with Fenmore and they’ve relegated to distant friends at best. Summer and Fenmore should be running around getting high and confiding in one another about their problems. I’m intrigued by the Neil’s story with Rose, but I wish it it would pick up the pace. I’m enjoying Hillary because she’s about the destroying Lane which I’m all for. I enjoy Tyler, but I still don’t like NuAbby. It disappoints me that neither Devon or Noah are being used. Log in to Reply Cornfed August 2, 2013 On paper the Carson hookup looked great; however IMO Sarah B and MoBe had zero chemistry. Adding insult to injury was the romantic kibosh of Brown’s Carly and Burton. They were one of my ALL TIME FAVE short-term couples, the other fave being Tony & Renee on DOOL. Some special vulnerability was brought out in these 2 anti-heroines that just tugged at my heart. Similar to Ryan softening Vicky on AW, but Philece Fucking Sampler KICKED ASS on DOOL, light years beyond Leann Hunley in the acting category AND as a true villianess. Sorry for sidetrack but there was a ton of stuff they couldve done with Renee, sniff sniff. That being said, I loved Braun’s Carly Log in to Reply Cornfed August 2, 2013 I loved me some Reilly in the 90s, but i think ive said before my issues with him were simplistic characterizations — u were either a goody goody or evil, there seemed to be little middle ground. He almost NEEDED to create alters (marlena’s possession, Eileen’s gazillion characters lol) instead of just fleshing out characters. My other bone of contention was the TRASHING of Jack Deveraux. But Billie Reed and Carly were 2 of my fave heroines of that decade! I also thought LML wrote some great stuff for Stafford! Log in to Reply Santa_Barbara_4Ever August 2, 2013 OMG the santa barbara mansion and that newly done Kitchen towards the end. Lawd God these sets today need to set up, watch youtube and take some notes! Log in to Reply Nk3play2 August 2, 2013 When it comes to GH, I’m most of, if not all of the show. I can even tolerate Franco, JUST NOT WITH CARLY. I have enjoyed Kiki from day 1 and don’t get the hate. Enjoying the Michael/Kiki/Morgan dynamic. My only gripe about it is how fast Michael and Kiki went from hating one another, to liking one another, to what seems like loving one another now. The way they introduced Michael’s one-night-stand Penny should’ve been how they introduced Kiki. A drunken Michael could’ve met a Starr look-a-like at bar, banged her and then moved on only for her to resurface as his brother’s girlfriend. Morgan n Kiki could’ve been on a break hence the ONS. I initially hated Silas, but his chemistry with Sam and Ava saved him for me; it also helps that he’s a doctor. Love Ava, Enough said. Julian/Derek was intriguing when the announced the character. He’s scares me a bit, he could be really evil. GH doesn’t have a resident bad boy right now that I’m interested in so he’s changed that for me. The Jeromes being present in Port Charles gives you that jeopardy like we had when when the Zaccharas first came to PC; anything can happen. Ecstatic to see Sonny in action as a mobster again. I am hoping and praying that they have Shawn turn out to be an undercover cop. I refuse to tolerate a Shawn/Alexis pairing, or a Carly/Franco pairing, for obvious reasons. Carly and Shawn should be tried again. Ironically I enjoy all the newbies, EXCEPT RAFE. Everyone at the hospital intrigues me. Enjoy the Quartermaine hijinks, loving the Corinthos “FAMILY” drama, instead of “THE FAMILY” that we got with Guza. I’d like more Dante n Lulu, and Spixie, but with Bradford Anderson on recurring, don’t see that happening. Unlike most, I’m very content without Jason. Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens August 2, 2013 @ Iowa. I loved Sarah’s Carly’s affair with Sonny, only because of the scandalous aspect of it, but I agree she and Mo didn’t exactly have crackling chemistry. I majorly shipped Mo and Tams (I’m talking cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs shipped. I’m talking 10,000 times more than I shipped Liason. LOL) Log in to Reply thecourt99 August 2, 2013 I finally finished the podcast and let me say I enjoyed every rant…even Luke’s rant about sets! Where do I begin? DAYS – I am happy it is doing well. I stopped watching when they did the demon possession storyline, and that is just a show that I won’t watch again. I am happy that it is on a creative high. B&B – I started watching again (I left during the Hope/Steffy/Liam/Steffy/Hope/Liam crap). I LOVE IT right now!!!! Katie is giving me life. I was concerned that there wouldn’t be anyone to counterbalance Brooke since Taylor is gone and I never thought that Katie could so easily fill that position. Brilliant! GH – I can’t say I really watch it anymore. I hated the character of Franco from the jump, but when RH returned as Franco, the whole “if the DVD don’t fit, you must acquit” story made me stop watching altogether. I love RH, but I can’t watch him play this role. The DVD absolving him of so much, and the authorities suddenly have no proof…and I know I hear there is a brain tumor? Franco was just horrible enough that a Michael Baldwin type story was needed. Since RH was doing OLTL and Californication, they could have EASILY worked it in. While he is in jail, he could be filming the other shows. He could donate marrow from jail and it count towards good behavior. He could EARN forgiveness. Anyway, I stopped watching him, and that is when I realized so much of the show was focused on his character. I ended up tuning completely out. For me, it isn’t even entertaining. I hate to say that because I love Maura West. I know that he is on less now, and the story is less about him, so I may tiptoe back in, but to be honest…. i am not interested in most of the other stories either. Right now, I just want to see Liz and Nik,…and Tracy. AMC – I am LOVING this show. Creatively, I think the show is on fire. I can’t wait for it to be discussed as thoroughly as the other shows OLTL – I am so far behind it isn’t even funny. I will watch it, but it isn’t compelling. Y&R – This is my heart. This is the show that raised me. I Like it now, but I don’t love it. I don’t think that Dylan is eating the show, but I also don’t understand the writing for Sharon or Billy. I will be honest, Jill has been hanging on the vine for a while now. Sharon has been crazy for a while now. I think that JG should turn the boat around and build up on some of those existing relationships. i am intrigued by Neil’s story. I completely buy Nick owning a bar, this is the same guy that bought the coffee shop last time he ran from NE. I do think Jillian’s idea (I think it was Jillian) about Noah being mentored by Adam was WONDERFUL! I could stand to see more of Victor and Nicki, and I would love to see what comes from the foundation being built with Victor and Adam. As far as the Abbotts, I would love to see Jack and Jill back in the saddle again. I would also love for Keemo to come to town and work alongside Jack, creating tension with Keemo and Kyle. I’m not a writer, but the Abbotts need something. I don’t love the show, but I do still like it. Log in to Reply lauren329 August 2, 2013 Love that we finally get some in depth chatter on OLTL. Like Luke, I miss the Buch mansion. But its not a dealbreaker for me. I disagree on the stories- I think the show has improved leaps and bounds from its slump in late May/early June with the exception of the poorly plotted tattoo mystery. I actually really liked the way they had Matthew find about Destiny/Jeffrey. I thought the actor quietly but effectively conveyed that it totally did affect him but the character knows he has no leg to stand on where Destiny and his son are concerned so he told Jeffrey it was fine. I’m sure they’ll do more with it. It was a nice contrast to him flying off the handle about Arturo- different situation that merited a different reaction. And JvD as drunk Clint is everything. I love that both AMC & OLTL are building to huge splashy galas with the whole cast. Feels like old times Behind on everything else because of the bar exam but rushed to listen to the podcast & watch OLTL. Both delivered big for me this week! Oh and totally agree with Jamey’s point that Caroline is a modern version of the Spectra hijinks on B&B. Loving Miss Lindsey. Who knew?!?
