The CBS talk show averaged 2.64 million viewers last week, a five percent improvement. The Talk is 5 women cackling at the top of their lungs. Both shows are nails-on-a-chalkboard horrible. They may be up in the demos over last year, but still much below the soaps in those categories. Plus, I am quite sure they don’t get nearly the level of hits on CBS.com or hulu, they aren’t repeated elsewhere, etc. Only Oprah has ever been successful and building a brand around a talk show. The soaps are a brand. They have name recognition. They inspire fierce loyalty and passion. Talk shows will never be able to replace soaps long-term successfully.
