HomeTagsPhotosFirst Impressions: The Young and the Restless Remembers Katherine Chancellor (PHOTOS) Daytime Confidential September 4, 2013 97 Comments Genoa City citizens were joined by returning The Young and the Restless favorites in celebrating the life of Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper). What were your First Impressions of Kay's tribute episode? 97 Responses Coffee_Junkie September 4, 2013 How positively VOMIT-INDUCING that CANE was the one to rush up to comfort Jill. Like no one else sitting there was willing to? And why was HE allowed to speak, but not Billy? I wanted to throw a brick at the TV when he was telling everyone that he *didn’t tell his family about Kay’s condition.* CANE, SWEETIE–THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT YOUR FAMILY. Writers you can CRAM this CON MAN posing as a good guy down my throat till the cows come home. I will never accept what you are attempting to force feed me. EVER. Log in to Reply soapjunkie88 September 4, 2013 Remembering Katherine!? I thought that “celebration” was about introducing a new set. It was nice seeing Amber, Nina, Gina, Brock and Danny again. I sort of liked Nikki and Jill bonding over Katherine’s death. I loved Jill’s speech even though the flashbacks were totally off. Jill speaks about finding out that Katherine was her mother and flashbacks of the attic catfight are shown. A little bit weird. Mac couldn’t come because of “personal reasons”? Seriously!? Mac owes Katherine basically everything and she stays away from her grandmother’s funeral because of personal reasons? Well guess we’ll never see her again. Where was Traci? No reason for Ashley not to attend? Or was there one made up before? But nothing tells you to just forget the character you supposedly should remember like the wedding plans of Nick and Avery or the actual three minute wedding of Paul and Cricket. Her differences with Nina … one look and all is forgiven and Nina is ready to stand next to Chris while she and Paul exchange their I dos!? WTF? This wasn’t about remembering Katherine. At the end of these two “special” episodes it seems it was everything but Katherine. Log in to Reply prenest September 4, 2013 @Coffee_Junkie I could not agree with you more. They want us to believe that Jill’s real son Billy would just stand there instead of going to comfort his mother. And where was the mention of Phillip? Kay thought of Phillip as her own and he’s not there. Log in to Reply rjm118 September 4, 2013 Unfortunately, the death of themost iconic star of this show was used as nothing more than a plot device. This wasnt about remembering Katherine, it was about moving these crap stories forward. This “park” was set up so Nick and the Cupcake have a place to say “I do”. The show is just unrecognizeable. Log in to Reply Jon September 4, 2013 Extremely disappointing but I could have predicted JFP and JG would fuck it up. I did love the ancient clip of Kay and Brock. Log in to Reply TraceyAbbot101 September 4, 2013 these were my EXACT comments on a different thread that I posted yesterday. It just makes no sense. All we know is she was creamated…. guess we will have to wait for the reading of the will to see who gets the a$she$. Yes, didn’t like how Nina gets a whammy, and all she has to do it look at Cricket and realize that Paul and Cricket are “soul mates”…. puke. puke. I have a feeling Murphy’s days are numbered. He’ll go off on a fishing boat that Kay bought for him and we’ll never see him again. And would it have killed one of the Williams boys to mention their sister, Patty? Hell, even Jack should have asked about her. I am sure she is waiting to bust out of that institution. Log in to Reply 1titanman September 4, 2013 With the vets you can tell that there was no acting, but MTS, EB, JW, Kate Linder all killed it. I was happy to see Amber, but I do feel some others should of been there. Where was Traci Abbott at? Was glad to see Danny and Gina there because Katherine their step-mother. I was happy to see Jill & Nikki doing some bonding, but why don’t these two act like Nikki never married Jill brother back in the day? However it was not a bad show- Log in to Reply tedew September 4, 2013 soapjunkie88 … not sure that your spoiler from episode two is all that fair to US viewers who do not get to see it until today. But again … I agree that Billy in the background being silent with a strange expression on his face bowing to Cane was rather strange. Billy had known Katherine since birth and Cane “impostered” himself into her life. Yes, there were some missing characters and maybe one or two who should not have been there but not a bad “reunion”. I’m just glad that the final images of Katherine were not overdone. Log in to Reply bobbyew September 4, 2013 Magnificent Y&R today. They dropped the mike!!! From Jess Walton flashbacking and performance. To the intro, the music, lighting, acting and the surprise wedding, amazing. Log in to Reply bobbyew September 4, 2013 Magnificent Y&R today. Log in to Reply Smitty September 4, 2013 I give it a C- and that’s not good. MAB’s fake funeral for Katherine should have been what they looked at and tried to replicate. There have been 4 different Mac’s and one of them should have been there. Do I prefer Ashley Baushiom…absolutely but come on now I would have suffered through Clementine Ford one more time. Then there were some other missing folks…like Dina Abbott Mergeron (who grew up with Kay and John), Ashley, Traci, Sharon Newman (why she wasn’t there is beyond me.). I could go on but I think I was as offended as everyone with Cane coming up to console Jill. Makes not one bit of sense. I guess I should thank MAB for the 2008 funeral because I choose to remember that as the funeral for Kay. Log in to Reply shane1969 September 4, 2013 Can’t stand Cricket, but I guess we are stuck with her. Why did she even get a letter? Amber is there, but no Mac, Philip or Chance? Tucker they explained pretty well. But Mac’s personal reasons-unless they have a storyline with that, it may be something. But I am sure that is the last we will hear of it. Of course, they ruined Katherine Chancellor’s character when her and Jill started along with each other. Log in to Reply lightbringer September 4, 2013 I had issues with yesterday(no Phillip& Mac; Cain at end), but today was good Soap Opera. Log in to Reply Restless Fan September 4, 2013 It was an ok episode. I felt in my gut awhile ago JG and JFP would not do Katherine’s death justice and so far I’ve been right. I do think they are trying within both their limited capabilities as EP and HW do put on a good show but Josh was never more than an ok writer and Jill is well…a black widow pulsar. It was nice to see vets. That was the best part of the tribute. Especially Gina and Nina whom I miss desperately. Were they used well? Not particularly. They served as more filler than foundation. Gina Roma, who was almost always supporting during her time at Y&R, is much better defined and complex than the sad leads were given today. The big omissions were Phillip and Mac. There really is no sufficient excuse for why they were not invited back. Those two characters were interwoven into the very nature that was Katherine better than Kevin, Chloe, Amber and the ever polarizing Cane. Even Avery, who barely shared any screen time with Katherine, was allowed a seat at the service. I’m surprised Dylan didn’t show up to announce to everyone that he had built the park. JFP said in interviews leading up to the memorial shows that these episodes were for the fans. I believe she believes that but her agenda is always front and center. Also was anyone else put off that most of the flashbacks were from the past five years only? Sad! For newer viewers these episodes would not paint Katherine as the powerhouse character she was. Perhaps they chose not to show older clips because classic Y&R would shine a light on itself on just how bad things have gotten? I agree with other posters that watching Cane go up to comfort Jill while no one reacted to it was nauseating. Why does every writing team insist on protraying this douche bag as a hero when he is clearly nothing more than an anti hero? Probably the most obnoxious part about Cane is how the writers dumbed down both Jill and Katherine in the process. These character, as developed by Bill Bell, wouldn’t piss on Cane if he were on fire after all he has done. Including duping the both of them on several occasions. But under less imaginative writers and producers anything in GC goes. I guess because they are all on board with forgetting who Cane is we are supposed to be on bored with it too? I said it before and I will say it again, Cane was the most interesting to me when he was bleeding to death on the church steps. It was my, Thank God moment with Cane. That’s what you should do with poorly visioned characters who are cancerous to the fabric of the show. Eradicate them and allow the healing process to begin. Y&R needs A LOT of healing!!! But it will never happen as long as the shows motto is, “repeat past mistakes.” Log in to Reply Ryan-Scott September 4, 2013 Mac had “personal business”? Log in to Reply Yoryla September 4, 2013 I have to wonder though, why on earth did they have Paul & Christine actually get married since Paul is on the show and Christine is not? They are going to have a “blissful” off-screen marriage? How lame is that? Log in to Reply NathanHastingsSr. September 4, 2013 The show and Jill’s horrible music were just awful. Log in to Reply pferrando September 4, 2013 Lots of negative being posted, but I am grateful for the two episodes. I agree that Phillip and Mac probably should have been there as well, but they were at least mentioned. I believe the big omission was Traci. I think the Cane reaction is a little bit of an overreaction. He was hardly on at all. And it was a hug people. I loved the last scene. Very touching. So now what. The will reading will be interesting and I hope it gives an indication of what’s to come. Were the episodes perfect? No, but I actually was dreading them. Wasn’t disappointed at all. Log in to Reply BlueBelle September 4, 2013 I have to admit I stopped watching Y&R in the late 80s/early 90s. But like a relative you haven’t seen in a long time, you still keep up by the occasional letters/email. In my case reading about soaps (here). I started watching during the Traci, Danny & Lauren being in college or was it high school(I forget). Lauren was so mean to Traci for being overweight. I still remember Traci (her best friend Stephanie) when she put on a bathing suit! I was so thrilled for her! But the triangle was great. So yes, it would have been perfect if Traci was there. I remember Paul and Andy (Gerald Ford’s son) being Danny’s managers(they worked at a restaurant before Paul had his detective agency). I watched the fantastic tribute in May to Jeanne Cooper so naturally I had to DVR the goodbye to the Duchess. I read Jeanne’s book and how she took Lauralee Bell under her wing. She felt it was unfair that some actors (mainly Terry Lester) thought she was there because of nepotism (being Bill Bell’s daughter) and always was very protective of her. It was great seeing Nina and yes, I wish Philip was there. The actors were showing their true emotions. Eric Braden gets alot of flack sometimes which he should but Jeanne had alot of respect for him. She adored Doug Davidson, Jess Walton and Melody Thomas Scott. LOL and knowing she had a little affair with her tv son Brock was kind of cool. What gave me chills was seeing her son Corbin Bernsen. Good Lord is he is mother’s son!! Those eyes!! Jeanne may have been a great actresses but she ADORED her 3 children: Corbin, Collin & Caren. They were her pride and joy! Log in to Reply Coffee_Junkie September 4, 2013
I think the Cane reaction is a little bit of an overreaction. He was hardly on at all. And it was a hug people.
A hug that Jill should have received from her REAL SON. Not some con artist who wormed his way into the family and in record time managed to get the old lady to hand him her keys to the kingdom when she was clearly having issues with her brain. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if she left him her ENTIRE estate in her will. We’ll know soon enough. I would have preferred to watch Jill fall on the ground in a crumpled mess, than see that FRAUD rush up there to hug her. Give me a break. Log in to Reply pferrando September 4, 2013 Sorry. I think it’s an overreaction. The character of Cane is written as though he truly cares for both Jill and Kay…and has more than demonstrated that. I too think it will be a bit much if he does “get the keys to the kingdom” and I’ll cry foul at that point. But this…it was part of her Memorial and not out of line. IMO of course. Log in to Reply harlee490 September 4, 2013 Don’t know I haven’t watched today’s episode, it’s waiting… This I came to expect, I knew it wouldn’t fitting, but look who we have\had writing & producing the show. I hope I’m content with today’s episode, I know I can’t be happy but the first episode was not chest tugging…it was clear yesterday this gesture to “use” a great character was more for plot of story for others, I smelled some of that yesterday. I will decide later when I watch. I the know this should drive new story but lets have the greatness showcased about Katherine a last time full of flashbacks, not just from ’05-’10. Has anyone else noticed the flashbacks…the majority our from LML & MAB period and very, very few from Bill’s era…shameful. I guess we must be getting a new set as from the posts today, this isn’t what we need but money spent on capable writers. :tired: Log in to Reply bc1954 September 5, 2013 I love that everybody ALWAYS remember the best of times when someone passes on, yet Devon is actually remembering how bad he treated her when he found out she was his grandmother. Very realistic, b/c we all have regrets… Log in to Reply bobbyew September 5, 2013 Magnificent Y&R Today! I will agree with a few of you all. Yes, the whole Mac situation was rather dismissive and laughable. Today’s episode was great though. Yes Traci should have been there but the budget was already through the roof. It will remain on my DVR for a while due to the fact that the intro was excellent, Cricket saying she did not want to overshadow the memorial was sweet. It was a great home going for our beloved Mrs. Chancellor. The ghost was beautiful and as fans we need to know Maria isn’t coming back and this was a great version for the shitty regime we have been given. Kudos to CBS, Sony and the JFP, Josh G. crew. Jess Walton you did the damn thang. Log in to Reply TraceyAbbot101 September 5, 2013 they cut out the scene where Dylan came crashing through the bushes, interrupting the service, as he rescued a baby duck from the stream. Log in to Reply pjc722 September 5, 2013 I have to say I liked the episode because it was a slow build up to what I am hoping with be a week worth of nostaglia! And y’all know that I am one of the toughest critics out there on all soaps! I liked the new set a great deal. It’s definitely better than the new ranch or the boulevard. But glaring for me was Jack remembering John and not being given any more screen time then SILENCE. When we saw John standing in the foreground I thought when we returned from commercial Jack would be talking. (Still have to say WHY does Jack seeing John not make him as crazy as Sharon seeing and talking with Cassie?! but I digress) Where was Gloria?! If we have Kevin and Michael there, Gloria should have been there to add some PANACHE! I know the actress is working on other projects but I still feel somehow her absence could have been addressed. Mac not coming?! Seriously?! I am tired of them mentioning Reed coming and NO arrival (months ago) and now personal reasons keep Mac from the funeral?! There were 3 or 4 actresses who played Mac, we don’t need the last one for flashbacks. We just need one of them! Philip is the MOST glaring absence along with Chance. Both characters were integral to dynamic of Jill and Katherine for years and not to see either at the funeral is a misstep. Granted, we know there is a promo for a ‘surprise’ guest so hopefully it is one or the other. Lastly, I have yet to watch the episode today but I hope that the letter Paul got was a bit more profound than Murphy couldn’t find Paul. To make it a plot point no matter how minor and to deliver nothing more than “you were like a son” is just silly and a waste of Doug’s talents, to say the least. oh yeah, I called out Cane embracing Jill instead of Billy but for the past 2 years Billy has had as much interaction with his mother as he has had with a job lasting longer than a month. Another character who is integral to the Jill/Kay dynamic! Log in to Reply pjc722 September 5, 2013 ” Yes Traci should have been there but the budget was already through the roof.” Bobbyeww, how do you know that?! We were promised a show stopper for an actress who has basically been there from the start for this show. Steve Burton can be off screen for a month to allow Tracey, Ashley, Mac, Phillip, Chance and all the rest of the important people in Katherine’s life to be there. Even Avery could have stayed home to babysit Faith. Sorry, but every once in a while a budget has to be blown up to give us fans what we want and if you can’t then WRITE believable reasons other than “Mac can’t be here because she got fat and can’t find the right dress to wear when she has to see her husband’s ex-wife’s smoking body (but unkempt hair)” Just saying. Log in to Reply soapfansince91 September 5, 2013 While I know many actors were either not called back for this due to scheduling, Traci, Ashley, Phillip, Mackenzie, Tucker, etc could have been mentioned onscreen. Cane, Devon… SPARE me! Fast-forwarded through that hot mess! Favorite part of both shows, was when of course, they were showing flashbacks of classic Katherine/Jill. One of the scenes included the classic attic showdown which any longtime fan will remember… “He used you…he used you like a COMMON. WHORE!” —Classic as well as… “Ugh your house is full of rats! It takes one to know one!” I was surprised they didn’t include “classic” scenes of all the major players, many scenes were from the last 10 years… and frankly we all know how they’ve been on this show. Overall I was pleased, but I suppose longtime fans, myself being an avid watcher since 1991 will never be satisfied. I’m sure she was smiling down as it was being filmed. Log in to Reply kbirdusa September 5, 2013 Lauralee Bell did get her job due to nepotism. How can you argue with that? I expected it ,but I don’t get it. what the hell more could Y&R have done with what they had? Behind the scenes stuff aside, from what we saw onscreen, what else could they do? They didn’t bring Phillip back, or Mac, or Traci. But with the cast that they had, there was nothing else really they could do. NO OTHER stories were really being featured today, so what kind of plot device was this? Give me a break. I am convinced more now than ever that people just don’t want to like Y&R and that’s that. And Im thru. Log in to Reply fmat55 September 5, 2013 I read so many posts here before I got to watch Tuesday’s episode and was expecting to be let down. Well I wasn’t. It was a beautiful tribute. I’m sure they couldn’t get everyone to come back. I enjoyed the old clips, seeing Brock and her real life son, and listening to the stories of those who spoke. This just goes to show me not to listen to all of the negative nancies who love to post here. I loved it and have been a fan since 1975. Log in to Reply stoney07 September 5, 2013 ^^^exactly my point!! Same thing happened to my roommate. When he got here and looked at my laptop he saw this and decided not to watch the show. Log in to Reply Dyllan September 5, 2013 Why the f*ck should Mac be there? That character has been a hot mess for years. I wish to forget about her. Who cares about Philip? He can’t act for shit. IMO, the episode was not bad. A lot of overreaction about little things (Cane hugging Jill when that IS in character. Cane has always been up Jill’s ass for years now). Log in to Reply dewlove September 5, 2013 Hi All….though I was disappointed in a few things, I enjoyed the last two days and felt it was, at the very least, a solid send off for Katherine and Jeanne both. Good *Nikki and Jill’s bonding, but I would have liked a mention of Nikki’s marriage to Greg (“you were married to my brother….”) or even Jill’s tryst with Victor (“we’ve both rode the tilt-a-whirl at Mustache Island”) *Gina Roma! Why can’t JFP set fire to the Athletic Club (she loves her a fire…) and have Gina come back to run a reopened Colonnade Room??? *The flashbacks. I will have to agree that there should have been more from prior to the last 5 years, but there were older ones in there as well though many here are claiming there weren’t. *Corbin Bernsen, goes without saying… *Seeing alot of people together, though many favorites were missing at least her funeral had a set full of people rather than looking like just a crowd of 5 *Tuesday when it showed the faces of the characters as they remembered Katherine. *Weds as each stopped and said a final goodbye. *When Lauren (I believe) said “Kay”. Hardly anyone refers to her as Kay anymore and I love it when someone does. *The new park set. Nice big set and a great tribute. However, it’s just odd that her fifth and current husband (Murphy) revealed that the park was named in honor of the name Katherine’s second husband gave her. We all knew her as Mrs. Chancellor of course, but perhaps the plaque could have said “Katherine Chancellor Park” and “In Memory of Katherine Shepherd Chancellor Murphy”. Small quibble though… Not so good *No Mac. I don’t understand why soaps don’t at least try to pretend missing characters are there. They could have Victoria and JT’s son there and Victoria leading him by hand saying “lets go find your daddy and Mac..” and also have Brock give a throw away line to Jill like “I’ll see you at the house after I drop JT and Mac off at the airport”. Mac SHOULD have been there but frankly we didn’t need to see her there (unless Ashley B was playing her) as long as we knew she overcame her “personal problems”, slapped on some of those feminine hygiene products during a commercial break and headed to her grandmother’s funeral. *No Phillip. Inexcusable that he was not mentioned nor was he even in flashbacks!!! At the very least, a frantic set of phone calls to Jill where he can’t get out of Australia or his plane was diverted elsewhere. *Spirit Katherine. I don’t mind Ghost John since he’s basically just Jack’s conscience. However, I just can’t stand the “do you see what I see” stuff like they did with Nikki and Jill. Now, if Nikki was standing with Jack and Jill and Jack mentions John and they all remark how they are both together again, I would be perfectly fine with all 3 silently looking out over the park and seeing Katherine and John walking off into the distance (without the “do you see what i see” remarks). However, the hokey way they did Spirit Katherine was a let down for me. *Why were people standing during the ceremony? Why were there hecklers in the crowd during a memorial/funeral? Why was a big deal made about Victor not wearing a tie but pretty much ever other male did? Odd odd odd. *The invitations. I know, I know…little Delia did them and at least it was Billy’s child and not Cane’s rugrats. However, the rich, socialite Duchess deserved gold embossing not crayons. I can’t stand how they softened Katherine way too much over the past 10+ years and this is a small example. Having said all that, I can’t wait to see the story this creates for Jill and Nikki. I only hope the Dylan rumors are not true. Log in to Reply Yoryla September 5, 2013 I actually liked these episodes. They were much better done than what I had anticipated. Ok what is it with some of you who seem to think you can’t like Y&R? You all get mad when some of us don’t like the show. We are all entitled to our own opinions. I don’t apologize for holding Y&R to a tough standard. I was brought up on Y&R during the glory days of Bill Bell. I expect more! I judged this “memorial” based on the 2008 “funeral” and the 2008 funeral was hands down MUCH BETTER! Yes there were some highs but the lows in my opinion outweighed those. Brock who has many ONSCREEN memories with the Dutchess was truly just an afterthought at his own mother’s “memorial”. Yes I enjoyed the Kay/Jill flashbacks but there was so much more to Kay. Her almost 4 decades on the show. We just got focus on the last five years with most flashbacks. I mean come on. I believe Jamey pointed out on twitter that you wouldn’t even know that Danny and Gina were her former stepchildren if you just watched the last two days. Kay was much more than just a sounding board to the younger generation. I’m sorry I refuse to watch this show with blinders. The memeorial wasn’t that good in my opinion. So many glaring absences and then they had PAUL AND CRICKET GET MARRIED AT THE DAMN MEMORIAL! What in the entire hell was that. Cricket ain’t been onscreen in months and then she shows up and they marry her and Paul. Just dumb! Bill Bell made Y&R the GOLD STANDARD and I will continue to expect that from Y&R. If JFP can’t deliver it then she has to go! Which she has certainly proved she can’t! Log in to Reply Coffee_Junkie September 5, 2013 I don’t recall Nikki ever finding out that Victor and Jill had an affair. I remember waiting for the big revelation, and it never happened. You’d think Katherine would have mentioned it to her. And as much as I DID like the tribute episodes I stand by my criticisms of it. I thought the Bug/Paul wedding was dumb. And the MISSING characters were far to critical to this show’s (and Katherine’s) history, and they should have been there. Mac missing not ONE Katherine funeral but BOTH of them? It was totally out of character for what she would have ever done. Log in to Reply RebeccaJ September 5, 2013 I thought the eps were very well done, unlike those stupid scenes at the mansion when they found out Kay was dead. Log in to Reply MissBubbles September 5, 2013 Y&R had the opportunity to make the funeral of Katherine Shepherd Reynolds Chancellor Thurston Sterling Murphy EPIC. It could have been the funeral to end all funerals, the golden standard on how to honor a beloved vet. This character has been on the show since six months into its conception. Then portrayed by the same actress none the less. This one character embodied the show whole history, pretty much everyone could be traced back to her in one way or another. I would have prefer the brass at Y&R wait until they could really do her character justice, they should have been saving pennies so they could have brought more people back like Dina Mergeron, Phillip Chancellor III, Phillip Chancellor IV, Britney Hodges, Mamie Johnson, Mackenzie Browning, Traci Abbott Connelly, Ashley Abbott just to name a few. I enjoy seeing Gina Roma, Danny Romalotti, Brock Reynolds, Amber Moore, but they were just used as sit fillers. You wouldn’t even know how Katherine was tied to Danny or Gina no mention of their history. I felt like Y&R should have took a page out of DAYS book when they killed off Alice Horton, they should have brought these people back two three days before the funeral to interact with family so viewers could have caught on their lives. Then let all the other relationships drama between the returning characters spill out at the funeral. I felt like the funeral should have really been shown over a week. Start the beginning of the week with people arriving in town, and then at the funeral we see tons of flashbacks. Y&R really miss the chance to really utilize 40 years of history to give the GRANDE DAME of Genoa City a fitting sendoff. They probably want to focus on the current storylines, but I sure do wish they’d do a gay storyline. My hope is in a couple months Phillip appears and the entire Chancellor estate is somehow really his because he is the only son to Phillip Chancellor II. Then Phillip has a love triangle with Victor and Deacon. [In real life though, Jeanne was a dear dear soul who touched so many. I was able to share my feelings in Soap Opera Digest last week. I loved her deeply.] Thom Bierdz (Phillip) was not invited back. Log in to Reply yojoromo4469 September 5, 2013 STONEY 07, sorry to hear you have cancer. My wife had breast cancer and am quite familiar with how bad, it can be. I realize there is a lot of negativity on this site. I am probably one of the worse offenders. I thought Jill did a fantastic job on the 2 day show. There were things left out, that I would have enjoyed and a lot that I did detest, example would be Cane instead of Billy approaching Jill and I though Phillip and Mac should have been there and also Tracey Abbott. I am just sad to see this once wonderful show, on its way to nowhere with giving Dylan all the time. It is too bad our EP doesn’t know us old timers don’t wish to see him daily. The whole explanation sounded SHADY as hell. Major side-eye. They keep hinting at Mac & JT being in a bad place. Are they divorcing or what? Danny looked like he had Hemorrhoids during Paul & Christines’s tacky ghetto azz wedding. Who the hell hijacks a FUNERAL to get married? Danny’s face was killing me! He wanted to hurl. The whole thing was an FU to Nina & Danny. They were cringing! Phillip, Chance, and Mac should have been there instead of Amber. Josh Griffith recycled most of MAB’s greatest hits in his flashbacks. I laughed my ass off when Jill & Nikki “saw” that ridiculous CGI apparition of Kay. Those special effects were awful. Jess Walton was the saving grace of that entire Memorial. She carried these episodes. Log in to Reply pferrando September 5, 2013 Coffee…As long as the last Mac doesn’t come back, I’d be okay with seeing her again. Log in to Reply stoney07 September 5, 2013 Thank you yojo. I appreciate it. I’m doing well though…it’s been almost 7 years and I’m still alive!!!!! As for Kelly Kruger coming back as Mac….I don’t think it can get as bad as Clementine Ford was. I really don’t. KK’s Mac wasn’t anywhere as good as AB’s Mac, but if AB can’t come back, I wouldn’t mind. I just-…idk. I would rather have Nina back full time as opposed to Mac. I mean, what really will she have to do except possibly bust up Villy…or hook up with Kevin, who they need to go ahead and make gay. I really enjoyed the flashbacks during Jill’s monologue (and the old scores!!). The scene where all the characters place flowers next to Katherine’s urn was touching and heart breaking. Lastly the final scene where Jill and Nikki saw Katherine got me. It was a poignant moment. Also, I read yesterday that Corbin Bernsen had in fact but some of his mothers ashes in the urn you saw making it even sadder. I’m not thrilled about the wedding which seemed out of place and completely gratuitous. These episodes should have been about celebrating Katherine’s life, not an impromptu nuptial between a couple that is rarely featured together. I love both Paul and Christine but I didn’t tune in too celebrate them. Soaps are all about emotional beats and playing them well. How can anything resonate when you don’t let those moments have their time in the spotlight? That’s what Bill Bell and subsequently Kay Alden and Jack Smith, did so beautifully. It’s what LML, MAB, JG/JFP never really tapped into. I’m always reminded when I watch Y&R that the next distraction is just a commercial break away. Sad, but that is the show it is today. Log in to Reply pferrando September 5, 2013 Today’s show was pretty good too. I liked most scenes that had two people in them. Victoria and Victor’s scenes were good…and I don’t know if it was just me, but the show looked great…better lighting…better pacing. It’s kinda what Restless said above…this regime as well never fully taps into what they have consistently. Sometimes maybe, but never seamlessly like pre LML. But hey, I’ll take the moments I can get. Log in to Reply pennywise555 September 5, 2013
Philip is the MOST glaring absence along with Chance. Both characters were integral to dynamic of Jill and Katherine for years and not to see either at the funeral is a misstep. Granted, we know there is a promo for a ‘surprise’ guest so hopefully it is one or the other.
I agree Phillip II had a number of extended front burner story arcs with Katherine over the years. His relationship wasn’t just the stroke of the writer’s pen, like Devon, who had NO relationship, or story, with her what-so-ever. Phillip was a son to Katherine and vis-versa. There is no way he would’ve missed it, same for Chance, who we knew as “little Phillip” for years as a little boy. Mac too. The story with Mac and Katherine in the homeless shelter was front burner. We saw these relationships grow and develop. There is no way Phillip, Chance, & Mac wouldn’t have found someway to be at Katherine Chancellors memorial. They would do it for her, and their parents Brock and Jill. Devon saying how his life was going to be different now that “his grandmother” was gone just made me laugh. Like how? He didn’t spend any time with her, even for the short time they were on good terms. Why isn’t Devon spending time with his new-found bio-Dad now then if all these new relationships are so darn important to him? How about Grandpa Arthur Hendricks Devon? You could go bond with him and why you’re at it, maybe you should tell him you are his grandson, and Jill is not his daughter. LOL! Devon sitting next to Brock, & calling Kay “MY Grandmother”, seemed out of place because they connected Devon on paper, but never in in story to Kay Jill, Brock, or anyone else in the Chancellor family. Why spend time on Devon in Katherine’s death if they never did it in Katherine’s life? When I think of Devon I think of Neil & Dru , not Kay, he had no connection. Meanwhile those in long classic Y&R relationships with Kay weren’t even contacted? It couldn’t have been because of budget because they can’t be much more expensive a day players. One of the Soap rags reported Thom Bierdz was willing and available. They had over 3 Mac’s to choose from. Easy bookings and inexpensive. I heard Sony pays for Steve Burton’s jet flights back and forth to his home in Tennessee, every week, and Y&R shoots around his Tues thru Thursday schedule, yet they can’t spend a few extra bucks to bring back the a couple characters closest to Katherine that were pat of her core family? If you are okay with everyone having their own opinion why do you (and whoever else) have to keep pointing it out? I just don’t get your point? Whether you were referring to my post or anybody else’s. The thread hasn’t been all negative. I’ve seen most point out some good and bad things about the memorial. To me, there’s usually good AND bad in every episode. Sometimes the bad outweighs the good, and I comment on it. But when I see that the show has actually TRIED to give a damn about this woman’s memorial…then I applaud them for the effort. Jill had a damn near 20 minute long monologue ALL TO HERSELF. Positive thoughts. As for the negativity, I know myself and yes I can be negative but I always try to balance something out that I do like in story and find something…but for me it’s hard sometimes…I do want YR fixed so desperately, it hurts sometimes. This is why right now BB is the best soap on tube, it truly reminds me of the 30 minute version of YR in the ’70s SO much, it’s all character driven and dysfunction, and wet, steamy passion pit! I’ve had love\hate relationship with BB over the years but I wasn’t into the whole period of Marone family period. Some liked it but it wasn’t for me, I was into the first 15 years more, the Spectras, Spencers, Forresters period and we have that back again. BB right now is most like Bill’s BB (in the beginning) for me. I feel BB is serving up a golden period again.  Must see TV! Yes, Stoney, you’re right, some just comment that don’t or didn’t watch the show but some like me have been viewers many years and see the glaring difference so I kinda get it. You never Stoney have to apologize for the love of any of your soaps, YR is near & dear in your heart as it is in mine, more for you but sometimes it’s jarring to me the damage the teams have done to YR since Kay & Jack was fired. It’s more evident compared to ATWT or GL. I would constantly try defend GL in its waning days from lots of people because that is what you do when (my case w\GL) love is full in your heart for your favorite show, so go ahead and be apologist I completely understand. Did I cry… Yes. Did I love LOVE Jess Walton’s monologue… 100 times yes. Was it nice to see amber back. Yes. Gina? Omfg yes!! Miss that chick!! Did I enjoy seeing the likes of Devon talk abt his grandmother … Yes siree. Did I love the new park set, yes and yes (especially after the horrible BOULEVARD restaurant set and the dull new ranch. Did I enjoy the banter and call outs? Of course cause I was screaming amen along side them! Corbin bernsen? Please keep coming back. But then what I believe so many people were “negative” abt were justified because Phillip was not mentioned for not being there. Macs excuse was written so we all ask WHY?! Jacks mother was Kay’s friend as was Tracey and Ashley. No mention. Not even jack calling to let them know. I thought the episodes were really good and I cried. But the negative all of us have talked abot is so warranted becuase the writers were lazy with the months of preparation that neglecting these facts and characters was just this regime saying WE THINK only this is important. So to all who are COMPLAINING abt the complainers, think twice and read three times then whine abt is whiners. Log in to Reply pjc722 September 6, 2013 (and, btw, my previous comment here about NEGATIVES and whiners and all that, was not meant as an attack. It was meant to point out that we all have and had expectations of what this FUNERAL EPIC story would be like and some of us got exactly what we wanted and we mentioned how we loved it. Others, expected something different and were looking forward to the return of characters and seeing flashbacks that they personally wanted to be on or thought we better stories to depict. And others, myself included LOVED the episodes because they gave us closure on a character a great deal of us have welcomed into our homes for decades and we also saw it as a fitting GOOD BYE to the actress who portrayed her. But we were also very disappointed at how cavalier the writers/producers were in not reecognizing or mentioning those people not there. We are all entitled to how we feel and react. Personally, I have never called out a person for being truly OVER THE MOON with a story or character WHEN they are truly CRAZY since I found that character to be horrible or that story amateurish. I also have never called anyone out on being negative about the same things. I do call out those who call out others. I think we should look at these forums as opportunities to see, learn, experience and move on. Not as a way to say someone else is wrong for not liking something… since calling them out is almost exactly the same thing as what you don’t like about them. ummm, does that make sense?! Plus its a show. And we’re real. So remember how we should all respect others opinions. Just my take. Log in to Reply ANGELWENDY15 September 6, 2013 I liked the episodes honoring the great Mrs.C, but I do understand some of the negative reviews. I didn’t think the Paul/Cricket wedding was necessary, but that was so JFP!! I also watch General Hospital, so I am used to her style. About the characters that weren’t present, what we all have to remember is that all the soaps are on a budget now. It’s not like the glory days of the 80′s, when soaps were getting huge ratings and they had all those big extravagant weddings where most of the cast were in attendance. Now they can’t afford to pay all those actors at once so that is why characters were missing for Catherine’s dedication. GH also only has small weddings now. It’s all about the money. But, I just want to see the soaps remain on TV so I just over-look things now and try and enjoy the shows. Knowing JFP, get ready for more Dylan, I’m sure as Niki’s son. Steve B is her favorite! I’m starting to think that they WILL be left Katherine’s part of the house because Kay didn’t want Jill to be *lonely* and Cane, Lily, and their brats will move in and take over that entire Chancellor set. I’ve told myself I’m going to try to hold out until Christmas as I like the holiday shows. But no freaking way in HELL am I going to watch that idiot Cane and his dipshit WIFE take over the Chancellor Estate. I will certifiably be DONE with this show. Finished. Log in to Reply pjc722 September 7, 2013 I’m still surprised that Jack (Peter Bergman) played a minor role in the 2 episodes. Amber had more dialogue and gave a speech. My point is more that Peter is a veteran of the show. Katherine had her hand in John, his father, having a heart attack when she orchestrated John discovering Jack slept with Jill. ANd Kay was his fahter’s life long friend. I could eventually get Phillip not being there. Or Mac. Both havent been on the show in a couple of years but Amber is the same so for any new viewers WHO THE HECK is she to Kay? I’m sure Jack had a speech and it was cut but it should not have been Log in to Reply ChrisGa September 7, 2013 Well, as a whole, I thought both episodes were pretty well done. Again, my biggest gripe was Cane consoling Jill when she broke down instead of having her REAL SON Billy or even Brock step up and be there for her; yeah, I know, it’s in Cane’s nature to do it, I get it. My issue with it goes back to the writers continuing to shove a character down everyone’s throat that hardly anyone above the age of 18-25 gives a damn about(and I can’t wait to see what he gets left in Kay’s will–the estate? Her entire fortune? Chancellor? Actually, at this point all of the above wouldn’t surprise me). Of course, these two episodes were all about Jess Walton for me. There’s a reason why the woman has 2 Emmys and why she needs to be on contract YESTERDAY–a right-minded EP and Head Writer would have her as the logical, matriarchal-type center of the show and back at Jabot with the Abbotts where she belongs. But knowing JFP’s horrific track record with the older set, I shudder to think what she has up her sleeve for Jill in the future. As for the impromptu wedding, I didn’t mind it terribly because I’ve always said Paul was the only guy for Cricket. My small quibble with it was the fact that they brought Cricket back on, put her back with Paul and made her D.A. And then she disappeared for six months without a trace and barely a word other than the occasional “Can you talk to Christine, Paul?” from Michael when one of his truant kinfolk was in a legal bind. So the whole thing just seemed out-of-nowhere. But, again, a minor quibble. Log in to Reply harlee490 September 7, 2013
HA! Jill is such a plum role these days! NOT! Rebecca can have at if for all I care. Jill, one of the most interesting characters on the show for over 3 decades, has been reduced to appearances a couple times a month to do…. well, nothing. She has no love life, work life, or home life. They don’t know, or care, about her history, present, or future, and they don’t even bother to connect her to her own family. It’s such a waste because she already played by one of the best actors on the Y&R, but right now a DOG could be cast to play Jill with what little she’s given to do. There’s nothing left to follow about Jill the Chancellor’s without Jill. They can paste the Chancellor/Kay connection on every newbie they hire, but there really aren’t any Chancellors left without Jill in the mix to develop them. I’ll read twitter about the reading of the Will, if it sucks I’m not watching that episode or anymore Y&R.
Couldn’t said it better about this original character that has carried a show for decades, Bill’s only weakness…his love for the character of Jill Foster Abbott! Log in to Reply pjc722 September 8, 2013 the reading of the WILL will be key for me on whether Jill Farren Phelps and even Josh, and for that matter any of the new writers, have any desire to pay attention to the long time fans and bring this show back to its core stories with the right actors. I hear Harlee and Pennywise and WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree that Jill is central to this show and if she is reduced to playing second fiddle, as they have her with Cane being head of Chancellor right now, that will make my decisions for this show a whole lot easier. For one thing, I believe with Jill at the helm of Chancellor there could be a great story of a powerful woman in business with a crazy screwy personal life! If anyone other than Jill gets the treasure chest of Chancellor than Jess Walton just might as well leave without notice… as is her perrogative since she is only recurring status. (Robin Strasser did it as did Beverly McKenzie on OLTL and Guiding Light.) I’m all for new characters. Honestly, i think that the show has some of the best veterans and need newbies to freshen up the drama. But not 20 something year olds. GIve us a love triangle with Victoria and bring in a 35 year old hunk to do battle with Billy and/or be invlved with Chloe. having all these newbies together and driving story is not fair to longtime viewers. The show needs to figure out how and what story should be and start writing that way but with a better mix of veterans to newbies til we know the newbies in a year. Unless, when CBS and Sony made the bells hire this new leadership they were instructed to dismantle the whole lot and make crap every day. Because if that’s the case, they are 50% there, already so good job! Log in to Reply harlee490 September 8, 2013 It would be an awesome story PJC if Jill got the golden goose of CI and has everything Jill always wanted money, power but her personal life is lacking… Jess Walton would tear it up and win another Emmy. I think they (the new hacks, which won’t happen) should do a long term story for Jill having severe depression from Katherine’s passing & no man in her life to share it with, her children (NOT CANE) are rather cool with her because of her lousy mothering skills…it all comes back to roost…maybe Jill gets possessive with her grand-kids (Delia, Johnny)trying to correct her mighty wrong. The “will and its reading” could actually break YR into pieces if fans are furious and backfires on the show because JFP which can’t be repaired…you only get so many bites of the apple, ask DOOL. I hope not but I can’t see these new hacks improving on anything. I do honestly pray I’m SOOOOO WRONG for YR’s sake. It’s time to go ROAR on FB again about YR & Jill Phuck-up Phelps, I’ve been doing it lately and letting it rip from the heart…Jill, Josh, Steve, & AngMcD! >) |( :(( :tired: Log in to Reply Leave a Reply Cancel Reply You must be logged in to post a comment.
