Matt Lauer Cites “Laziness of the Media” in Fueling Ann Curry Exit Drama

Much has been written about The Today Show firing Ann Curry and the public's perception of Matt Lauer's involvement. The firing damaged the former No. 1 morning show enough for Good Morning America to take the top spot in the ratings. It also spawned countless attempts by NBC to clean up the mess and salvage Lauer's reputation.

Just when most people had begun to forget about the show's dark days Esquire magazine interviewed Lauer about what transpired. The morning show staple blamed "laziness of the media" in part for repeating rumor after rumor.

The way the media treated what happened with Ann Curry was a disappointing learning experience. I was disappointed by the laziness of the media, the willingness to read a rumor, repeat that rumor, and treat it as a fact. And yet, what were my options? Does anyone want to see a person who’s making the money that the newspapers say I’m making complaining, “Woe is me, my life is terrible, and people are being unfair”? No one would’ve had any patience for that. I wouldn’t have any patience for that. So you just shut up and go about doing your job and hope that people who know you well — your friends and your family — know what’s true.

now he looks like more of an azzhole. i wonder which part of it was rumor? was it that he held out on signing his contract unless she was fired? was it that he never attempted to connect with her? was it that NBC handled the firing horribly?

they should let this die already. he won’t come out looking good.

The bullying and public humiliation that ann curry had to go when she was fired and left nbc was horrid. It was all for ratings. It’s only acceptable bec ann curry is Asian american and bullying Asian americans is acceptable for tolerant mainstream media and entertainment press. Everyone would be screaming homophobia and gay bullying if a gay anchor and lesbian journalist was treated the way curry was treated when she exited nbc. Media loves screaming abt gay bullying and gay suicides yet Asian american students are the most bullied group according to studies and Asian american women have the highest suicide rates according to research. Oltl had that offensive video where they were mocking stereotypical Indian accents and there was no backlash from entertainment press. If oltl had a video mocking stereotypical ways a gay person speaks then everyone would be screaming homophobia.

I used to watch the Today show until the only person who had hard core journalistic integrity (Ann Curry) was gone. NBC doesn’t even know how to cover the news without being in bed with Obama, and now that idiot Alec Baldwin will be on liberal lovefest MSNBC. I just hope they weren’t interviewing a reality star (Ex. Chris Jenner) today at 8:46am like they did a year ago, which made them the only news outlet to totally ignore the moment of silence of 9/11.

Matt is such an arrogant prick and has been for quite awhile. His contract must be quite expensive because considering TODAY’s decrease in ratings as a result of the bad publicity surrounding the Curry incident and the viewing public perception of Matt Lauer, you would think the most sensible solution would be to give him the old heave ho and replace him with another TV media personality that’s quite frankly more likable and popular.

luverica I nominate Jay Leno to replace Matt Lauer, he could do monologues on the latest headlines each morning. I like Jay Leno and his style and he could deliver the news just about as well as they have already been on the Today Show.

MotownKate4Soaps, to each their own but I wouldn’t like that. I personally find Jay Leno quite boring. I was thinking someone like Hoda Kotb. I think she’s wonderful! Pair her up with someone like Anderson Cooper. Get him away from that tired talk show he does. He deserves better than that. I think the two of them would be a great combination. That’s just my opinion.

Matt Lauer, you are as bad as Paula Deen! Stop talking to the press about this!!! You keep making yourself look like such a jerk, and he really is coming across as one. Bullying a female co-worker and always blaming her and not taking any blame?

I was excited when at work the other day there was another white male as the Today co-host and I thought Matt had been replaced. But now I see he wasn’t. That’s the only way to help Today’s show get ratings, get rid of Matt Lauer!

I didn’t know it was acceptable to bully anyone.

I honestly don’t care that Ann got the boot. She was BORING. She wasn’t the next Barbara Walters. She just wasn’t dynamic to have that kind of position. She would make an excellent reporter/journalist, but a morning anchor? Plus, this victim-hood is starting to wear thin with me.

IMO, NBC and ABC’s morning shows all suck. Way too fluffly for my tastes.
