Fifty Shades of Grey Casts Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey

It looks like Billy Magnussen won't be portraying Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey big screen adaptation. According to Variety,  Universal has cast Jamie Dornan in the pivotal role. Fans of Once Upon a Time will recognize Dornan, who played The Huntsman/Sheriff Graham.

Now this casting, I can see. This makes much more sense to me than Jax Teller. Its not Erik from True Blood, but it will work.

I don't know never heard of this dude but the books spent a lot of time on how beautiful Christian is, he's pretty...I have to see the finish product. I was still hoping for a more well known actor, to me, to play this part eg. Paul Walker, Aleksander Skarsgard, Ian Sommerhalt whoever it is needs the acting chops to pull this off.

I hope this dude has them.

...and then Jamie Dornan said, "Hey wait, all of these other guys in this line up took a step back. Honest, I didnt step forward. I dont want to portray Christian Grey, its a career-killer! Honest, they all took a step back! C'mon now, this isnt funny anymore! Hold on...."

I like Dornan, he was excellent in BBC's 'The Fall', where he played a serial killer who worked as a grief counselor and had a wife and children. He's certainly a better actor than Somerhalder or Magnussen. He's probably about as good as Hunnam, although very different. This is a big gamble in terms of his career though. The best case scenario for him is that the movie isn't as horrible as the other sexually charged big budget major studio movies of the last two decades (Showgirls, Body of Evidence, Color of Night, Eyes Wide Shut, etc.), doesn't lose too much money, and his performance is good enough that other directors will give him a shot in a better film.

They contacted Robert Pattinson very early on because of the obvious Twilight connection but, understandably, he refused to even consider it. None of the other big names bandied about for the male lead: Gosling, Cavil, Skarsgård, Bomer, etc. were real possibilities. They all have solid careers, respectable resumes, and are far too savvy to risk what they've built for themselves on something with such a huge potential downside. Even if the movie finds some financial success because of it's built-in audience it will be a critical bomb and get no respect whatsoever. These actors certainly weren't gonna take it for the $165,000-$175,000 Universal was reportedly willing to spend on the role. They would need to pay a lot more to entice an actor with a bankable name to take such a big risk with his reputation which, if it is destroyed by the film, will seriously curtail his future earning ability. Solid, name actors usually only take big pay cuts to be in prestigious or challenging indie films or if they're in dire financial straits and really need cash.

I don't expect much from the movie but I hope Dornan comes out of it with some better opportunities.

Luke Grimes (from primetime soaps, Brothers & Sisters, True Blood) has been cast as the brother, Elliot Grey.
