The Young and the Restless Reclaims Demo Throne Over General Hospital

General Hospital celebrated beating The Young and the Restless among Women 18-49 the week of October 7, but there is nothing like slaughtering yet another Abbot to put Y&R back on top.  According to The Wrap, Y&R reclaimed its demo throne during the week of October 20 and hit an eight-month high in total viewers.

However, just because Y&R took back the crown doesn't mean General Hospital isn't still going strong, thanks to Robin's (Kimberly McCullough) return. Reportedly,

“GH” still enjoyed a two-year high in that demo with a 1.2, as well as a two-year high in the women 25-54  demo, and reached a six-month high in total viewers with an average 2.821 million.

I would be curious to see the change in ratings in HH and demos on GH comparing the "classic" GH episodes featuring Anna, Robert, Robin, Faison versus the "new" GH focusing on Franco, Ava, Silas, Julian. et. al.

Luke, can you provide an analysis? I wonder if the show dips when the newer GH cast members are featured. Are there particular episodes and characters/story that elevate GH's numbers and are there some the bring them down?

Whether you agree with Y&R killing off Delia (It irked me) you have to admit it laid out emotional, gripping heartfelt story and acting that soap viewers like. At the end of the day a heartwrenching story appeals to viewers more than "the new adventures of of Boris & Natasha and their fake plastic faces and blockage"

Jill Feren Phelps: if the murder of a 7 year old girl creates a "spike" in the ratings...just imagine, how many people will I get to watch if a serial killer slashes Genoa City?
No, I got it: a human sacrifice: Brilliant!!

Now it's time to make it even..kill off a Newman.
and although this storyline has stinky parts, i still don't see it as 'gripping' or 'emotionally heartfelt'.. that's a exaggeration.

Seriously, I want Jill Farren-Fuckup Phelps GONE! I truly believe it's the best chance for this once great story to become great again.

Tragedy porn always brings high ratings. But Y&R will suffer in the long run because of stunts like this. The GH disasters did mostly well in ratings. But in the months between the show suffered. Same will happen to Y&R. No doubt.

Stunt stories don't provide sustained ratings.

But all the shows these days just continue to throw that crap our way.

As much as I hate Phelps, I see the other shows doing the same thing.

My 'better-off-dead' list for Y&R:

#1 - Victor Newman - enough is enough

#2 - Nikki Newman - she acts as if she's on drugs all of the time - another poster mentioned her 'breathless speaking', I agree!

#3 - Cane Ashby - just sick of this phoney character

#4 - Lily Ashby - bored with her and her brood

and that's just off the top of my head.

I kind of expect the two shows to trade off in that coveted category on and off.

Just a guess but I think that demo will not be stable with any one show for the foreseeable future.

Y&R's stats suggest that in spite of all the carping about the Delia demise storyline, people are still watching (lol). JFP may be be something of a hack or she may have lost her touch (some might say she never had it) but the woman is no fool. She knows what people will give in to despite protestations.

General Hospital is absolutely on FIRE!!!! GH has not been this good in Years. Every storyline is red hot, the writing and acting is excellent.

You would think YR would have more 18-49 viewers with double the household ratings. I'll never understand how those ratings are so high.

I could be wrong, but I have never felt as though ratings numbers were a true representation of who is actually viewing.

Also, I could be paranoid, but I have also always felt as though ratings numbers could be easily tweaked/manipulated to favor one show/network over the other.

JMHO. That's all.

CBS skews very old generally. So they dominate overall viewers, but the demos as you can see are very tight from top to bottom.

If they were rigged, YR would be way ahead there too, no?

@lightbringer, It appears that JFP has not had an original thought in a long time. We should have expected her to kill off another child, despite the historic losses of Cassie and Colleen. The writers won't let viewers forget Cassie's death, every year they write that in to stoke the possibility of a Nick and Sharon reunion. (Something that should never happen.) Sharon really needs to go on hiatus (translation -- send the character to a mental institution -- off camera).

JFP killed off little Jake (Jason's son) on GH, so why not put in yet another re-hash of the same tired s/l? This time there is a guilt-ridden father instead of a guilt-ridden mother. Frankly, the maudlin mood over Genoa City made the entire week's worth of episodes not worth watching. My FF button has gotten much more action than the play button. Only one scene was worth the wait -- Ashley's return and it was too short. I would prefer to have the hit-and-run s/l end quickly.

Better still, let's clear up the switched-paternity results s/l quick, fast and in a hurry! (I know that runs counter to the soap philosphy.) I want them to bring in a new Phyllis, have her miraculously emerge from her coma and wreak all kinds of havoc in Sharon's life.

It's exactly like that. Y&R has the most overall viewers, but many of their viewers are beyond the demographics.

miztee246- Yeah, I hear you about JFP; after she killed Jake(who was younger than Delia; still playing with trucks) on GH I was so down on her. I was not pleased when they finally ditched MAB and replaced her with Phelps; I decided to give her a chance so I returned to Y&R and watched and then bitched for 9 months, that is until JFP sacrificed Dee on the alter of her ego.

I will not watch until she is gone: Fire JFP!!

This stunt death of a child is beyond vulgar. It's disgusting. CBS and Sony signed off on it, so they are just as guilty as JFPhuck-Up.

The whole saga makes me sick. Grief porn doesn't make me want to continue to watch this crap.

GH isn't much better. IMO, the best soap on TV is Days.

I'm right there with you lightbringer. I tuned out the minute the promos hit indicating Phelps plan to kill a kid. I shouldn't have kept watching anyway. It's a sin for any true soap fan to support ANYTHING Jill Phelps does.

I am unclear on how they did this latest thing on ratings, saying Y and R is up.
I read the Nielsen ratings weekly and they are usually a week or more behind, and now all of a sudden they are claiming they are way up. Would like this explained.
I also don't understand why it would take the Nielsens a week to be posted, when night time shows are posted the very next day. Weird.

The phrase "the week of Oct 20" may be a little confusing. It means "last week", it being the week of October 14 to 18. The press releases, such as these, usually come sooner than the full ratings report, usually on Thursdays. The ratings report usually comes on Friday, but it can also be the following Monday or even Tuesday.

There's a more thorough thread about this at the forum page, BetseyD actually asked clarifications on the ratings reports aswell, you should check that out. I think when the ratings report comes out is basically just dependant on how quickly the people who process them, can do the processing. And also, I believe the prime time programs are believed to be more valuable to the suits than the daytime programming, hence the importance of them being processed quicker. I'm sure they use different methods for the processing.

Sorry, still think GH deserves to be #1. The stories and characters are on fire now. I also watch Y &R and am seeing Phelps old story-telling from GH, the dark stories that I hated (child killing). GH right now combines comedy with the drama, and makes their villians likeable that you don't want to see them killed off. Phelps makes her villians into total pyscho's, like Carmine, (so typical Phelps). They could have continued more with the Lauren/Carmine affair, which would have been more realistic. But when Phelps decides to get rid of a character, all of a sudden they become a pyscho. Seen it so many times on GH when she was producer. This is NOT what I want to see on soaps!

Thank YORLA, and that helped somewhat. Seems like they kind of post the Nielsen daytime whenever they feel like it. Sometimes it is difficult to understand where they get their ratings from and who actually won a certain age setting. I am older than dirt and only watch Y and R and know how long it has been at number 1. Would like to see that go away and maybe JHP would take Stevie and go away also.

So I see Josh's name still on the credits, but I was under the impression that Altman was basically the HW at this point until Passanante's stuff starts to air in December (according to her own tweet).

Anyone know when Griffith's writing is done?

Not that it matters, but it'll be interesting to see the two months of her material for a show that she's only been writing on since the beginning of this year.

Thompson has only been at YR for a couple of months more.

I just can't believe it.

I just don't know yojo...

I wonder what Lee Bell thinks? Can you imagine if Bill was still around and had to witness the hijinx these past three teams (Latham, Maria, JFP) have created to try to get ratings?

I don't think Bill EVER wrote for ratings.

His stories did climax during sweeps, but since his stories ran for months and sometime years, nothing he did seemed hokey or desperate at all.

There were no "returns" of former big soap names...few deaths...rarely a gun even. He had the best psychos, but even they weren't forced, and they also ran for YEARS more often than not.
