10 Best Male Soap Opera Entertainers of 2013

No. 10: William deVry, General Hospital

Storm Logan, who? Michael Cambias is so 2003. Hello, Julian Jerome! William deVry returned to soaps in 2013 as the latest General Hospital mob boss to challenge Sonny's (Maurice Benard) grip on Port Charles. He did so with swagger and charm.

The handsome actor sold Julian's concern for his secret grandson Danny and his mother, Sam (Kelly Monaco), the product of a one-night stand Julian had with a teenage Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn). He also masterfully drove home Julian's ruthless side, as he schemed to reclaim the city with his diabolical sister Ava (Maura West). With the mob war heating up, another secret offspring on his way home and Julian's unfinished business with Alexis, we can't wait to see what 2014 holds for The Talented Mr. deVry.

No. 9: Blake Berris, Days of Our Lives

Blake Berris makes being bad look oh-so-good on NBC's Days of Our Lives. Whether he's drawing Gabi (Camila Banus)—or one of his female cousins—in with those sad eyes and pouty lips, or plotting against Sami (Alison Sweeney), Kate (Lauren Koslow) and Will (Chandler Massey), you can't help but have a soft spot for troubled Horton grandson Nick Fallon.

In the hands of a lesser actor, Nick would be universally despised by this point. A homophobic, murderous, obsessed, attempted rapist, Nick is generally the type of character soap operas have end up ground to bits in a trash compactor. Well, they did try to drown the lad!

Berris manages to keep just a hint of humanity in Nick's eyes, no matter what unspeakable acts he's committing. We're hoping to see him keep up this delicate, psychosexual balancing act for seasons to come on DAYS.

I can only agree on DeVry, James Scott and Don Diamont as entertainers this year the rest are blah especially NOT Bradford Anderson

Good list, but for myself I have to say I can't see Don Diamont at number one. He does deserve a place there but lower.

Good List. And though I hesitate to type this but... What the hell!

After reading through this list, I stopped at one performer and thought, "Hmm, the description written by the DC gang sounds very familiar, like a similar character on another daytime drama. This guy could prove an inspired recast." Naysayers would say, "No!!! He's too young!" But in actuality, he is around the age that the character should actually be. And he could give a fresh, new take to a messy, complicated, iconic character. Ladies and Gentleman, with apologies to Jamey Giddens, I give you a "Wishful re-Casting" of Blake Berris as Adam Newman on The Young & the Restless!

This is a great list and I totally agree with the choice of Don Diamont for #1. Bill is such a great character and DD is fantastic in the role. He and Heather Tom and KKL really hit a home run this year in their story. Bill is definitely a unique character and strong enough to anchor the show after those big departures. Now that Ridge is back I can't wait to see the battles between TK's Ridge and DD's Bill. Based on their first scene the other day it should be epic!

Thanks to someone for at least not ranking Steve Burton in the top ten. Bad enough to put up with him daily, on my one and only soap opera.

It's not a list I particularly agree with, but I can agree on one thing:

No Roger Howarth.

Sonny gets on my nerves, but his scenes with Morgan/BC have been amazing versus his scenes with Michael which are too smooshy. Now, I do love Michael/AJ scenes, and think they are dynamite as father/son, which I attribute to SK working well with CD.

How can it be that Stevie B isn't número uno?

JFP didn't have it in the budget to pay you all off? Evil

Great list but I have quibbles with two actors.

Blake Berris is a decent actor, and this site seems to be in total love with him, but he was not able to make me feel sorry for Nick. I didn't feel an iota of sympathy when it came out that he had been repeatedly raped in prison. Nick is a soulless monster and I really wished he was finally killed off, but it seems that they might bring him back from the dead. The dude deserves to suffer.

Don Diamont deserves to be on this list, but at Number 1? That is a bit too high. But I have been surprised by his acting chops on Bold and the Beautiful. I never thought of him as a good actor when playing Brad on Y&R. He was handsome and sexy as hell, but I thought of him as nothing but a pretty face/body and average at best as an actor. But he has showed he really can act as Bill on B&B.

Michael Muhney delivered on so many levels. Y&R's loss will be Primetime's gain. So long Y&R.

Great to see Blake Berris on the list! He is truly a young talent that will only grow.

Not sure that Maurice Bernard should be on this list.

Great to see Don Diamont on top Smile He is finally getting the recognition is deserves after being in daytime over 30 years....DAYS, Y&R and B&B. He was always seen as eye candy on DAYS and Y&R. He finally is getting the attention he deserves on BOLD.

It would have been nice to see Peter Bergman on the list. He makes acting look easy.

DD (Brad) being let go from YR was the best thing for his career! BB gave him a character/storylines that really give him the opportunity to shine!

I along with many of you are SO VERY THANKFUL that Steve Burton is not on this list!!!!

I wish DAYS would scoop up Michael (Adam from YR). Maybe Peter Blake? Hell, he could even be Phillip Kiriakis....I'd be all for that!

Dollar Bill at number one! I really thought B&B was in for trouble when two veterans walked out the door. Much to my surprise, the show got 10 times better after they left! Stephanie's storylines about hanging around in downtown Los Angeles' Skid Row was a Debbie Downer tale for me. Ditto her battle with cancer. As for the loss of Ridge. . . Once he left, it allowed KKL a chance to shine once again. Don Diamont was great with KKL.

As someone who loves Days, no matter how good or bad it's perceived to be at any given point in time, I say, "No Thanks."

I prefer to have all the drama play out on the screen, not behind it. There are plenty of talented, baggage-free actors that can play those roles.

You do realize that if Sony-Y&R fired him, Sony-Days ain't gonna hire him. .. And for the record, I'm a big fan of MM's. Can hardly wait to see him in prime time.

DD really came into his "own" this year on B&B. Writing out Ridge last year, open the door for a REAL Alpha Male. While we'd seen Dollar Bill in action before, it was this void and huge storylines, that allowed DD to truly become a force. It's hard to believe "Brad Carlton" existed. Well deserved No. 1 ranking. I do wonder if MM would have ranked higher were it not for certain circumstances. A true loss for daytime, but gone.

@Santa_Barbara_4Ever, since Sony owns both Y&R and DAYS, MM will definitely not end up there.

I love Don, but this year with Brooke was just gross. I'm also not a Sonny fan. I would have added Michael Eaton and Peter (Jack on Y&R) to the list.

This list is pretty whacked. Upper list is good, but...

Blake Berris? I actually count myself as a fan of his, but... come on. Top ten in all of soaps? The scenes on the island were great but otherwise he was barely on all year.

Bradford Anderson... ugh. I'm so glad he left. He is talented and sweet, but also extremely, extremely annoying. To me that is not entertaining.

Worst on this list is Will DeVry. SEROIUSLY? He is nice to look at but probably the weakest contract actor on GH in a long, long time. He is not at ALL believable as a mafioso. Total and utter miscast. And not a great actor. Not at all. Very, very average.

But yes, THANK YOU for not including Roger Howarth.

Missing from this list? Andres Hove and Eric Marstolf.

Hmm... when you say you hope BB keeps it up for seasons to come, are you implying Nick isn't dead?

Didn't think so anyway. Wink

Where is Greg Vaughn? He knocked it out of the park this year as Father Eric Brady coming to and coping with his rape. He was must-watch on DAYS.

I also liked Anders Hove (Faison, GH) and John Aniston (Victor, DAYS.) They were awesome and MVPS on their respective shows this year.

I like Blake Berris and Jason Thompson but think 2012 were their best years. 2013 were rather light for both actors.

William DeVry hasn't had much to do as Julian Jerome and hasn't wowed with the little he has had to do. He sure is nice to look at though.

I think that Vincent Irizarry should be cast on Days as Peter Blake. Now that Kristen is coming back it would be the perfect time. Vincent is the perfect person to take over the role and try to win Jennifer Rose back. Maybe he could bring back a Jack Deveraux look alike with him and then maybe they will find out that he is the REAL Jack. Anyway, they need to give Jennifer something better to do then worry about JJ and Abigail. I am just so glad she is done with Daniel.

Blake Berris' lips deserve their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
