Did Days of Our Lives Give Chandler Massey a Good Send-Off? (POLL)

January 2 marked the end of Chandler Massey's Daytime Emmy-winning run as Will Horton on Days of Our Lives. In the four years Massey inhabited the role of Lucas (Bryan Datillo) and Sami's (Alison Sweeney) son, Will dated Gabi (Camila Banus)—whom he later got pregnant—had lots of unintentional homoerotic chemistry with the Brothers DiMera, came out as gay, fell in love with Sonny Kiriakis (Freddie Smith) and covered up a whole slew of felony crimes.

For my money, Will's most significant relationships during this time period were with his gorgeous grannies, Dr. Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) and cosmetics queen Kate Roberts (Lauren Koslow). Doc and Kate were two of the first people in Salem to love Will unconditionally. The boy's bond with Marlena especially proved Dee Hall didn't need Drake Hogestyn or Wayne Northrop to still be part of a "supercouple".

We're gonna miss Massey at Daytime Confidential, but wish Guy Wilson the best as he assumes the popular role on Jan 8. Now it's your time to have your say.

What did you think of Chandler Massey's last episode of DAYS?

I read that TPTB didn't tell Massey that these were his last scenes/didn't write any sort of sendoff for him because they were annoyed that he spoke about leaving before they wanted him to. I sort of see where Meng et al. are coming from if that's indeed what happened, but at the same time Massey (until he started phoning it in about a year ago) delivered for the show for years and probably deserved a bit better.

ETA: I think Guy Wilson is going to be awesome. All signs point to his being really enthusiastic about the role and having a good rapport with Freddy Smith.

Much like Chandler took the character to a new level (remember dopey Dylan Patton when Will was paired with Mia?), it seems now is an apt time to pass the baton to a new actor who is capable of raising the stakes yet again for the Will character.

Chandler may have been stuck in a bit of a rut with his performance as many fans have noticed his lack of investment in the role this year. Not that his performance has been outright poor (for the most part Massey has remained quite enjoyable and vital in the role), but if Will is to remain long-term as the central Brady-Horton and grow into a vital, central character for years to come, I think the time was right to take a chance with this recast. Will has gone through many life changes lately and as a twenty-something it is natural for his character to evolve and grow significantly at this time. Looking forward to watching that and to seeing where Guy takes the role.

Best of luck to both Chandler and Guy in their respective new pursuits!

As for the handling of the transition, I think that unfortunately when a character is front burner and not going off canvas in between, the focus needs to stay forward and on the story - shifting the focus to a big "send off" for the actor doesn't help the audience accept the recast.

Off-screen, I agree they could have given Chandler the cake and party and such, but we all know what office politics is like - he didn't play that game well so he didn't get the cake. You don't blindside the boss on national TV while he's basking in his first best series Emmy in 35 years. He'll learn his lesson and move on, I'm sure.

I didn't mind the on-screen send-off. Massey seems bored with the role for over a year now. So yeah, it's time to just give the role to another actor.

However, behind the scenes it could have been handled differently. A cake and an official goodbye from his co-workers should have been possible.
But again in the eyes of his employers, Massey did misbehave. So well don't know.

I'm excited for Guy Wilson. I hope he can give Will some life back. He needs it!

Apart from finding out (for the umpteenth time) that the women in his life are a group of take-no-prisoners vixens, the character is not experiencing a significant, life-altering moment or disappearing for any length of time, so I really don't see what kind of send-off the show could or should have done story-wise.

The hugs from Sami/Allison Sweeney at Club TBD the day before yesterday and the cheek pat from EJ/James Scott seemed pretty emotional to me. If they didn't know it was Massey's last scene with them, I would be surprised. As for any sort of send-off with Freddie Smith, I didn't feel it. The scenes were nice and all,but it did not seem like a subliminal farewell. The fact that Massey hadn't had a scene with Deidre Hall in AGES, that really ticks me off. I was hoping Marlena would show up yesterday for a "Happy New Year, Will." (Goodbye Chandler)hug. Nope.

Instead of Love or Hate, I was just disappointed. However, given the circumstances that were reported (he was not made aware it was the end until after he taped everything), it makes sense. They gave him the F U treatment as others said bc he didn't play their game and blindsided them with the announcement he planned to leave.

Funny how comments the comments are trending towards Chandler "being bored" or not being into the role in the last year. Really? I have to question who is writing these comments when so many are just to much the same. If you were to look at fan pages for him he seemed to only get better.
So what if he said he was considering going back to school. Some act as thought the boy had his class schedule, books and a pkg of Snackables in his backpack. And was gone. No he said he was "Thinking about it". TPTB acted like little children. They panicked. And fired him. Think not? Why did Charlie Sheen tweet that angry tweet? Why was Chandler reported to have left that last day in tears? Why no send off? Why the secret recast? Did they really think this sweet gentle man was going to do something? Seriously ? Meng, Corday and the rest are losers. They hired a man that by from what I have seen has no depth to his acting. Watch him on Hawaii five-o! Given a role playing a jealous murderer you would have thought he one dimensional. Nothing. The character of Will Horton is a deeply complex 21 yr old young man. Not a 30 year old without the ability to restrain himself. He tweets about "Tranny's" in the grocery store and how "whatever it is" i"is it a boy or girl" and my favorite " stop touching the grapes!". Hey loser! Don't worry you can't catch the desire to be a Transexual. And accepting his single tweet apology? Really? If he had tweeted the same thing except using the N word would " I feel terrible" suffice? No his head would be chopped off. Corday never wanted Will and Sonny to be the power couple they became. And the hacks they call writers have no clue how to write for them. THAT is why both Chandler and Freddie's performances may have been seen as lack luster. Even the best actors wouldn't be able to do anything with those scripts.
Whatever it's done. Will and Sonny even with the upcoming wedding are done. The beautiful story is over. I love Freddie so I may try and watch for him.and if not I have Addicts Anonymous and Chandler along with Casey Deitrichs band And I Rise.

Chandler Massey shouldn't have announced his departure before telling his bosses. It was in response to questions about his future was unintentional and reflects his youth and inexperience in dealing with the press.

I don't mind recasting the role early. You find the actor you want and you don't want them to slip through your grasp. The show comes first. The brass at DOOL, however, took intentional steps to treat someone who has brought them a lot of positive press in a really shabby manner. I put a lot more blame on them rather than Chandler since it was very intentional and very petty.

DAYS' website has already pulled Chandler's name and picture. That's cold.

That entire web page is a hot mess! Chandler is gone in one day but Eileen is still listed. Casey Deidrick is gone but Nathan Owens is still listed. Meanwhile, Noel Maxam is still listed as co-EP even though Lisa de Cazotte replaced him 2 years ago! Oy vey.

FreddieFan, a few words of warning: Try to confine your craziness to listening to the voices in your head. Several other message boards and blogs have already banned you. You'll find that the DC folks are extremely tolerant until you show that you are not able to stay within the site guidelines, as you've done elsewhere when you crossed the line from being a fan to being a psychotic.

uhmmm..Sorry but I'm not banned anywhere. I just posted what I believe to be the truth. What is wrong with that? I thought that that was what these comment sections were for. You post your opinion and I post mine. I have not used any extremely profane language, threatened or insulted anyone personally.
I will admit to not reading the DC comment posting guidelines, but deferring to your seniority here and what I feel and am perceiving as either bullying or even just a mild threat. I will leave you to whatever it is you think, except that I am curious. What did I say that caused you to accuse me of something I haven't done or said? Or what have I said that bothered you so much? Do you think that by insulting me or slandering me and my sanity..ie bullying me that you will discredit me?
And please accept my apology if I have harmed you in anyway! I don't know you and I by nature would never intentionally hurt anyone. Well aside from possibly insulting a few Days people.
I was merely posting what I believe to be the truth or my opinion. again I apologize if that somehow has hurt you.

I think CM has been far more engaged in the last week than he's been in awhile(he was particularly good during the fallout once he found out Nick was "murdered"). And yes, I would've loved to have seen one last scene with Deidre Hall; the scenes between those two in the last couple of years have been pure gold--they truly were a "supercouple" in the best sense of the word.

Why do you feel that attacking me with threats and accusing me of things I haven't done is ok? If this site or any other has a problem with my posts, I've not been made aware of it. I am offended that you slander me without any evidence. The DC folks haven't said anything to me. Why bully me? What have I said or done to make you say those mean things?

Ok I was wondering when the Guy Wilson hate would find its way to DC

Chandler when he spoke to TV Guide said that he was planning on leaving & then asked to be let out early if possible. Days said they would release him as soon as they found the recast. They did, he left. Maybe he shuld have gotten to say goodbye but thats the biz for ya

As for Guy's Tranny comment, He has apologized for his ignornace and what he said was ignornat but he has apologized over & over. Im beginning to think the hate would be to any actor who dares to take on the role of Will

I will miss Chandler but am glad to have Wilson continue and excited to see what Guy brings to the role of Will.

I just could not get into this storyline or these characters/actors. They were too young and pretty boy and too into having a kid at such a young age.

I think if they'd done a story with older actors and characters it would have been more interesting. This just felt like a storyline that was completely targeted for attention.

Perhaps a gay couple moving to town and adopting one of the soaps many pregnancies would have been better.
