CBS Daytime Posts Double-Digit Growth in Fourth Quarter

The Tiffany Network's daytime lineup has a reason to smile. CBS Daytime programming posted double-digit growth in the fourth quarter, with all of the Network's programs delivering year-to-year increases in viewers and remaining up or even in key women demographics for the fourth quarter.

For the quarter, CBS Daytime was up 14 percent in viewers, eight percent in women 25-54 and 11 percent in women 18-49 compared to a year ago. The Young and the Restless was the No.1 daytime drama in viewers, women 25-54 and women 18-49 (tie), while The Talk delivered its best-ever fourth quarter in viewers and women 25-54.

Interesting. Y&R's main focus was on the s/l heavily featuring Billy Miller and Michael Muhney.

RealityCheck33....I agree. This doesn't bode well for Y&R once Miller and Muhney exit at the end of January. Hope the show has something really good coming up to keep the audience engaged.

One suggestion CBS - please bring back Captain Kangaroo. You can trim the CBS Morning show by an hour. Then, your schedule will be complete.

There are very few reasons for me to tune in, but I guess Y&R is currently watchable. LoL

I'm a bit perplexed by this news. I thought this show was horrible. Was I misled? Do I need to put it back on my DVR?

^^ IMO, no, you haven't been misled. The thing of it is, as has been discussed here on many occasions, that Y&R viewers and I believe to some extent also B&B viewers, are different than say the average GH or DAYS viewer. I truly believe that many Y&R viewers first of all aren't very vocal about their show, as in being on message boards, etc., they just watch. It's a part of their daily routine, and jeopardizing that routine would be much worse for these people than thinking about if their show is good or bad and moving on to another show. And second of all, it's in these people's nature to be loyal and have faith, that even though did they see their show as bad, they would still stick it out thinking that it is bound to get better. What it boils down to is that I believe it is likely that Y&R, B&B, and CBS as a whole network has more loyal viewers to their shows, despite what is happening in them. I also believe the average Y&R or B&B viewer is more conservative and leans politically to the right, than the average GH or DAYS viewer. I also think the actual viewing experience might be different for the average Y&R viewer than the average GH viewer. I think that Y&R viewer might have some other things to do while watching or might like the fact that they are able to cook or do the cleaning, etc, while watching. Y&R has always been considered a "slower" soap, meaning that things happen slowlier and are based on conversations, whereas GH at least nowadays is very fast and something that you often can't take your eyes out of, without missing something. I believe that the average GH viewer has their eyes glued to the tv when they are watching and will more likely FF than do something else if there is something that doesn't interest them.

It has many a times been wondered why for GH, it seems that it has so many people talking about it, but still they are only at number 3 overall on soaps and the ratings aren't even better (even though they have improved) This can be seen on many boards, like SOC, a prime example, or simply on this board, from Perkie's Observations. At SOC there's three pages worth of threads each day, whereas on Y&R it's usually one page or one and a half at the most. Also, it has been wondered that even though Y&R fans that are vocal are clearly saying the show is not in good shape, the ratings are still up. Why? Because the majority of Y&R viewers still always watch whatever happens, and they are silent. They don't discuss Y&R anywhere on the internet, they just watch and then forget about it. Whereas we who like to visit the boards, we keep up with the happenings and ins and outs of the backstage shenanigans, etc. And I believe that GH has more of these viewers that talk about it and go to boards, etc. I believe this is a big reason for why the ratings don't usually coincide with the general spoken opinion.

Btw, This is all just my own speculation though, not any written fact, so don't take offense.

Wow...that's a lot Yoryla.

I agree to some extent.

However most viewers that I personally know lean very far to the left. YR has a lot of male viewers, a lot of older viewers, and a lot of AA viewers as well.

I think Days is the one who is impacted by the "right", and that's why a station in Utah dropped the show because of its "gay content".

Everyone can speculate all day.

And yes, the show "may" be impacted when Miller or MM leave, however, everyone said the exact same thing when Stafford left. And I think she's the biggest star of the three. Plus Tom was VERY popular as Billy and there are a lot of folks eager to see him back. As this MM nonsense calms down, and if what I suspect actually happened, happened...there may be less impact than what his fans think. Also remember they have to be Nielsen monitored to count anyway. Look at what little impact the Time Warner blackout had to the show when 3 mil TV viewers lost the show for a month.

We'll see. As someone who's loyal to the show (not Phelps, of course) I hope it continues to be healthy like the rest of the soaps in 2014.

Speaking of the Nielsens, I would like to know why the soap ratings for daytime, are so far behind, when I am able to see by noon the day following a night time show? Why are they so far behind?

Yoryla, I do agree with you and as P~ stated to extent just at least in my situation. You truly hit the nail on head on many points IMO. CBS's "soaps" including ATWT & GL are or had been naturally been more traditional compared the other three networks. As for viewers NBC I always I had read had the most "right-leaning" viewers.

You got me to a tee, I just won't give up my CBS daytime but I have added NBC's DOOL now and if Days took a drastic turn into weirdness, I would drop them like a hot potato but never CBS until I have my last breath. I am very, very frustrated with YR right now, it's painful to watch some days because I remember the joy CBS daytime brought me day in, day out. During CBS's heyday maybe ATWT & GL would jiggle up & down in storytelling and even BB but you could always count on 3 out the 4 having hot stories and wanting to watch every single day. The fact is YR wasn't never issue of being in that category because of Bill & team. YR you could always count on being the steady flagship of CBS daytime. My God, no network will never have a soap rating again of 1.4 and still on the air as GL's dying days. It was out of loyalty CBS kept it that long because P&G couldn't be making much money.

As for myself I'm most certainly not any shape or form conservative but yes traditional and thinking ahead of the time with our family and absolutely in my thinking when it comes to situations.
