Y&R's Eric Braeden on Michael Muhney: "He Wanted Me Off The Show"

Eric Braeden has never minced words and now he is claiming fired The Young and the Restless actor  Michael Muhney wanted him off the soap opera! In an interview with Radar Online, Braeden reveals Muhney considered Braeden to be an "old lion" to be pushed aside by himself, a "young lion."

Eric Braeden: I welcomed Michael Muhney when he came here. He is a great actor. We did have our differences, but for anyone to say that I had him fired is a lie. I have always thought he was a very good actor and told him so. Towards the end, Muhney and I did have our differences and had a shouting match, no question.

During that shouting match, all kinds of things were said. I won’t go into detail about it. I don’t remember the specifics of who said what but what I do recall is that I was prompted to get into ‘fisticuffs’ with him because he wanted me off the show, if you want to know the truth. That is about as far as I will go. That is it. It was a campaign to get me off the show. It was Muhney who wanted to get me off the show and he expressed that to various people.

Radar: Why did he want you off the show?

EB: He wanted me off the show because he wanted to be head honcho. In his words, I was the old lion and he was the young lion. He wanted to push aside the old lion. That was in his words to me, at the very end. I welcomed that guy, as I said. (I told him), ‘You are very good at what you do, keep your nose clean and stay out of everyone else’s business and just do your job.’

Oh Michael and your big bagpack of hubris. A newbie recast wanted a 30+ vet (and a part of the shows super couple) off the show?

Eric's a grade A douche. But he's also a soap legend. Michael may be a good actor, but he was part of the shows worst years.

These people need to learn to STHU, their egos know no bounds.

Apparently TPTB don't want this to settle down.

Yeah because Muhney would have the power to get rid of one of the biggest stars on the show.

This guys ego is out of control.

The more these idiots talk, Im more inclined to believe Muhney was railroaded and that this guy played a huge part in it.

I find it hard to believe if Muhney wanted Braeden off the show that MM would have enough clout to do it. On the other hand, Braeden certainly had the power to get Muhney ousted.

Regardless, not sure why these actors don't stay quiet and just do their jobs and act. Just as the story starts to die down, Braeden feels the need to jump in and stir the fire.

It's almost as if CBS's strategy is to keep the story alive....to damage Muhney? For press (look at everyone talking about Y&R)? To get more eyeballs on the show? I can't believe that Sony, CBS and Jill haven't told the cast to keep quiet and this is a matter that shouldn't be commented on publically. It is just making everyone involved look bad.

How would EB know why MM was fired? All EB is discussing is his relationship with MM and what he knows. He didn't say one word about the allegations, other than that he hardly knows her.

"I just don’t know people’s names until they have been here for 10 years."

Let me help ol Eric Braeden, as a long-time viewer.

Well, lets see. He should be now just recognizing...

Greg Rikaart as Kevin Fisher.

In 2 years, he will know Amelie Heinle (she began in 2005) as a woman he shares 2 or 3 scenes a week with, as his daughter Victoria.

That fellow Eric, you have been calling "Billy-Boy", his name really is Billy, as in Billy Miller. I know you wont notice, Mr Braeden, for another 5 years, but he is leaving The Show.

Oh, you should recognize Dave Tom as the new Billy Abbott. He's Heather Tom's brother, and played Billy 10-15 years ago.

Speaking of which, in the studio next to you. That IS Don Diamont playing Bill Spencer. To get you Aricept-riddled mind going, he played Brad Carlton for years. And that is Heather Tom, who played Vickie in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Who else? That fellow getting all of the screen time, and the guy your family is getting re-written around is Steven Burton, as Dylan Reed McAlroy.

Does that help, Eric?

I agree, there is no big conspiracy theory here IMO. One of the reasons I like EB is because he pretty much doesn't care what anyone thinks and will pretty much do what he wants.

Now someone may take him aside and tell him not to give anymore interviews after this.

As for MM he himself has said that his hubris has gotten him in trouble before, and coupled with his dislike of "the old guy" Anthony Geary winning an Emmy in 2012. So EB may not be off point. IMO

This really isn't anything new. MM obviously had some huge ego, but then again EB does as well.

I'd rather have a YR without MM, then without EB. But then again I've been watching since before Vic came on, and I've always been partial to the character and the relationship with Nikki.

And this neither confirms or denies any of the sexual harassment claims. Only MM or HK can be the ones to divulge that.

I'm just looking forward to 2/1/14. And I'd rather not have a recast anytime soon. This whole thing has soured me on that character...plus it's been occupying a lot of airtime. Time for a break from ALL of it.

Both MM & EB are ego maniacs and EB should stop playing saint here. He got into a fight with PB. He told a female fan once that if she were a man, he would have punched her

So maybe just maybe EB needs to take his own advice to MM and keep his mouth shut as well

Too soon, Eric Braeden. Way too soon.

I'll take one Eric Braeden over a dozen Michael Muhneys any day, but he and everybody else connected to Y&R should STOP TALKING NOW. There are a lot of pissed off fans and these kinds of statements are not helping to calm the waters.

I don't get why EB gave his interview to a rag. Is there not a single daytime vehicle he could trust? Of all outlets ... RadarOnline? I don't get it.

One of the reasons I like EB is because he really doesn't care what others think and right or wrong he will do what he wants.

As to upset fans, out of around 5 million viewers of Y&R I would say less than 1000 of them are active on message boards. Most fans are offline and go with the flow, and most likely unless they pick up one of the soap mags within the next couple of weeks they won't even know what is going on with the MM/HHK mess.

People will miss MM when his story wraps up and they will be intrigued by the next major story on the horizon which most likely will be the introduction of Ian Ward. By 2 months most casual daily viewers will forget and won't even think about it until the recast comes on.

Peter Reckell/ Steve Burton popular actors who have left their soaps after long tenures and the soaps thrived since they have left. Y&R will survive this.

I am not one for big conspiracy theories so the whole SB/JfP/EB thing just doesn't fly with me. IMO

Good for EB for speaking out. Especially with JC (Katherine Chancellor) gone now EB and Victor is the face of Y&R and the only one people know who don't watch soaps. MM definitely had a backpack full of hubris but unfortunately he lacked respect for daytime icons and I'm not just talking about EB. I remember he tweeted nasty comments about Tony Geary when he won his last Emmy too. MM is just a blip on soaps radar compared to EB and TG and many many others. I don't know if the HK allegations are true but he was supposedly fired from Veronica Mars too for getting into it with castmembers and leaking finale spoilers so maybe he'll finally learn his lesson now.

Lol Sorry Mr. Braeden, I've wanted you off this show for quite some time now for several reasons. So MM isn't the only one.

@hey mon: that was hilarious!

I cannot abide Mr. Braeden; however, I think he has a tendency to call things like he sees them, good or bad. I have no problem believing he and MM had loud outbursts on set, nor do I disbelieve that MM wanted to get rid of the old lion. MM's lack of tact and decorum certainly contributed to his ouster. I will still miss the potential of his take on Adam Newman, though.

Now I know why the show was boring and uneventful in 2013. They had to balance out all the shenanigans. The real soap is what we didn't see.

EB has always had a big ego. NO secret. Just ask Peter Bergman. As for MM, from what I can tell the guy was a perfectionist and wanted everyone to be the same. Those kinds of people can be difficult to work with for sure but often produce great work. From what I can tell about MM twitter feeds he had great respect for Sharon Case, Peter Bergman and Josh Morrow. I gather they more closely resembled his work ethic and therefore he got along with them easier.

I do know that many months ago there was a scene where Victor made some claim to have paid for Adams college education. A factual error that many fans brought attention too on twitter. It was later revealed that EB had ad libbed the scene. A writer for the show tweeted saying that wasn't how it was written in the script and a few months later there was a brief scene where they had Adam clarify what Victor had said. I also know that same writer had tweeted things from time to time that gave the impression that MM was in his ear a lot to rewrite things. The show does have problems with continuity. We all know that! I think a personality like MM who is vocal, like most fans are, clearly rubbed people the wrong way. His brash approach didn't help.

THis too shall pass. Like everything else in Hollyweird.

EB is the main reason I will not be watching after Jan 30th. I believe that MM has a big ego, I also believe that EB's ego is bigger than that. I am sorry but this man is nothing but a bully, on screen and off. This is my opinion of course, but I'd rather Victor would have been the one to leave.

I made a thread earlier on soap central about this topic, and it was quickly deleted. FU soap central. I don't know why I bother with that candy coated sugary "G" rated website in the first place. I think Eric Braeden is a first class azzwipe. I don't believe Michael had the clout to try to attempt something like that. I believe both actors had extremely big egos, and often clashed. Eric Braeden "rules" that environment over there. his character is always winning, and also getting the last word in, so I don't believe his claim.

Well, firstly I definitely believe it. MM had never made it a secret he wanted to be the leading male star of the show. And in many ways, he was.

However, who hasn't wanted to get rid of EB at one point or another? I mean, I'm sure most actors want to be leading, central figures, and Victor did run the show for a long time. So even if the idea was quite ambitious, I don't think it's anything that's very reprihensible. People are allowed to be ambitious and strive to greatness.

Thank you!! Everyone is all over twitter and everything talking about how Hunter is a liar and that this interview proves it. No it doesn't! All he is doing is saying he had nothing to do with MM firing. He said he didn't coax that girl to go to TPTB to report MM.

This interview is discussing ERIC's relationship with MM, that's it. People reading into things. Desperate

Oh My God. Did Eric Braeden just say all of that crap?

How in the world did his PR agent ever let this guy talk? His ego knows no bounds. To say that he doesn't even acknowledge people unless they have worked there for 10 years is arrogance beyond belief.

How could anyone work with this guy? He calls himself a Christian too? This is just the worst excuse of a human being imaginable. I've suffered through periods in my life in having to work with big egos, but this is too much.

No wonder Muhney cracked. I think I'd have brought in a pistol to work. Funny, Muhney loved Peter Bergman. They totally respect each other.

Now they share something in common, they both got punched out by Braeden.

This show needs a do over. They need to flush out this cast and rebuild. If I was in CBS's promo department, my head would have exploded by now. These actors need to shut the fuck up.

I've said it before and will say it again:

Eric Braeden is painful to watch, what with his searching his memory for the words from the one time he deigned to actually peruse the script. His ad hoc rewriting the scripts as he mumbles along is not generally deemed 'professional' acting style nor would it be tolerated in other acting arenas, as far as I understand it.

Now, I acknowledge that he can act, or could act, I mean. No one whose English is a second language, comes to the States, and makes it as an actor is someone who 'can't' act. But his bad memory is embarrassing and painful to watch and has been for many years. He mugs... not with wide-eyed comedic mugging, but with his TGVN face rubbing and staring at the ceiling. IT'S PAINFUL TO WATCH... why do so many here idolize that as 'acting'?

Today's episode, where he holds Connor, is the way he behaves with all the kids... he mumbles 'oh, there, my boy', etc, etc, etc. That's NOT acting, dear boy, that's mumbling your way through a scene.

Muhney can act tornadoes around the rest of the cast, EXCEPT for those who can act on his level: Bergman and... well, can't really think of anyone else. Muhney is arrogant, but at least can back it up with talent. Braeden is arrogant and backs it up with longevity - that's all he's got now.

He is not an icon... he is an actor who cannot deliver the goods and should be back-burnered for weddings and funerals. Think of how much Jeanne Cooper could still deliver in her scenes at age 84. Compare that level of competency to Braeden's current level of competency in acting. The chasm is very deep indeed. The pencil drawing of Cooper is more compelling than Braeden's appearance at the christening.

To separate the actor from the character:
As to how wonderfully involving his on-screen relationship with Nikki is, that has long been over. Thomas Scott is acting her heart out, as she, too, has to carry each scene they're in together.

In this day and age, to take the shit he deals out to her is truly horrible to watch. EXCRUCIATING. Nikki, by herself, for putting up with his moods and misogynist behaviour helps perpetuate the myth that a 'good woman' can 'heal' a broken, troubled man. PLEASE! It's to cry over, really. She enables his behaviour. I 'hate' her with him, because it makes her weak.

Nikki truly needs a make-over: hair that is age-appropriate, and a life separate from that mess Victor.

'Nuff said.

Michael
