HomeTVDays of Our LivesNBC RENEWS Days of Our Lives Through 2016! Jillian Bowe January 22, 2014 41 Comments Days of Our Lives fans sitting shiva over news Alison Sweeney is exiting the soap, can cheer up some. NBC announced on Wednesday the almost 49-year-old serial has been renewed through 2016. In a released statement NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke said: Days of Our Lives continues to be a fan favorite for the daytime audience and we are thrilled to keep it going through its 50th season. Days has shown year-to-year increases in key female demographics and remains both relevant and fresh creatively due to the hard work of the producers, writers, cast and crew who have worked tirelessly to make Days the ratings success it is today. Senior executive VP Programming for Sony Pictures Television's Steve Kent stated: Having won the Emmy Award for outstanding daytime drama, Days of our Lives continues to deliver on its legacy of quality storytelling. We appreciate NBC’s continued support and are excited to celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary with our generations of dedicated fans. Long live the daytime soap opera! 41 Responses SoapArmageddon January 22, 2014 Congratulations Days! Whatever they do in the upcoming two years, they need to keep this writing team in place. The show is by no means perfect, but it is currently the best soap on the air. The way this show uses its history and little details that seem unimportant and later turn out to be quite significant is just brilliant. Log in to Reply Patchworks January 22, 2014 SCORE! I am excited that I will have my show for another two years. This is fantastic news, a consolation after the loss of Allison Sweeney. Log in to Reply Hannah Scorpio January 22, 2014 YES, YES, YES!!!! I knew Ali wouldn’t leave if the show wasn’t going to get renewed. She would go down with the ship if it was being cancelled. There’s going to be a 50th anniversary!!!! Days is the only soap I watch anymore. The other three got too (depressing, biased, tedious) for me. With the exception of Rafe & Jordan, I love all the storylines, even the Jafe story is being saved by Kate and Lucas’ involvement. Log in to Reply Jon January 22, 2014 I’m so excited about this! I’ve been a Days fan since my grade school days in the 70s! My Mom (RIP) was a viewer since the 1965 premiere and she turned me on to it. Days is currently my favorite soap, then I like GH, then the dreadful Y&R. Log in to Reply Yoryla January 22, 2014 Congratulations to DAYS! Extremely well deserved! :crown: There was never any doubt for me. They were not going to cancel a show, on the brink of it’s 50th anniversary, that has gone through a creative and ratings-wise renaissance throughout the whole of last year, 2013. And Alison Sweeney leaving is certainly not going to make something like that happen. Frankly, talk like that is somewhat pompous and makes her seem more important than she is. Other and bigger actors have left the show before and it still hasn’t been cancelled. It will go on and flourish without AS, as it did for 30 years before she ever came along. Log in to Reply pferrando January 22, 2014 Really happy for the show. Days was a powerhouse in the 70′s before it lost its way. I know a lot of people like the James Reilly years, but for me it just dwindled into a plot driven mess. I think they’ve found themselves again, and they need to keep writing what’s working. Great job! Log in to Reply angrierblackerman January 22, 2014 Congrats Days. Currently the best Soap on the air! Log in to Reply LizzieVee January 22, 2014 So thilled. In my opinion, the best of days was the 60s-70s — family driven story lines, 30 drama. When the 80s came along with the one hour format the storyies were more murder driven mysteries, kidnappings, and yes, lots of glamore. I do have many favorite stories from that time however. But I stopped watching when they got really depressing and gorry when they got into the supernatural stuff and when Alice was supposedly killed, that was it for me. That’s not what I wanted in my soaps. I did follow the show in the mags and knew what was going on though. But, now, we are back to more family driven storylines, the use of history, love, angst, and yes even a supposed murder but its by far the best its been in many years. I have kept myself realitively spoiler free and am the happier for it. Log in to Reply brettyboy January 22, 2014 Yahoo, so B&B, Y&R and DOOL all safe, and from the sounds of it GH isn’t going anywhere Log in to Reply blake3b January 22, 2014 Great news! I love Days, it’s the only soap I’m watching anymore and it has been so good that watching it every day is a must. I can’t wait for the 50th anniversary! I hope they bring back so many wonderful vets from the past at that time. Log in to Reply lostfan January 23, 2014 I’m so happy!! I have watched since 1981, and the show is really cooking right now!! Love Eric/Nicole and EJ/Abigail. I miss Chandler Massey so much–don’t care for nuWill at all and I will miss Alison Sweeney, but show is great and can’t wait for 50th Anniversary!! maybe Peter Reckell could come back??? Log in to Reply Plum January 23, 2014 Congrats, DAYS! Well deserved! Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon January 23, 2014 Days Trivia: November 8, 2015 will be the show’s fiftieth anniversary. Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie Olson Williams) is the most veteran castmember, having appeared on the show since 1968. The role was played by two actresses before her. When a show is this good, I don’t mind a weak story like those two. Not only is the loss of ED’s Kristen bearable, but I even look forward to Dr. Jonas scenes (haven’t like him since I started watching a few years ago). He’s good with JJ, Brady, Nicole, and Theresa. Log in to Reply SonnySprocket January 23, 2014 Congrats to Days on the renewal. Time for the Days execs to start planning the 50th anniversary on screen bash for November 2015. I need to see as many former characters/cast members on screens as we can get for a big splashy story and celebration. Log in to Reply tylerbo20 January 23, 2014 Gh celebrated all year I hope days does the same perhaps a big celebration Tom Horton medical centre being opened ? Log in to Reply pferrando January 23, 2014 Oh God Soap…let me get that Soap Opera Encyclopedia out… I saw 3: Original Carla Doherty. Then Catherine Dunn…and then Cathy Ferrar. Susan took over in ’68. Log in to Reply ChrisGa January 23, 2014 Great news for my favorite soap! Now they just need to lock in that writing team through 2016 and we’re good to go! Log in to Reply Ryan-Scott January 23, 2014 Congrats to Ken and Co.!  I want hella Hortons in town when this show hits 50 in November of 2015! We are talking Bill, Marie, Jessica, Laura, Mike, Sandy, Scotty, Melissa, Sarah..as many as can fit in Horton Square! Log in to Reply Duchess January 23, 2014 Hooray! I just started watching again thanks to EJ and Abby and I’m totally hooked. Log in to Reply gato1 January 23, 2014 Amen SoapArma!! these writers rock!! I am very impressed with them mentioning old things, such as Abby/Austin, Jack raping Kayla, etc. It feels like a real universe where past things would be mentioned. I will REALLY miss Ms. Sweeney, but I have a lot of confidence in these writers. Log in to Reply ChrisGa January 23, 2014
Sorry, this pic makes me kind of sick. I just don’t want to see this.
Judging by your screen name and avatar, you have no problem with people who commit adultery, kidnapping and murder, amongst a multitude of other various crimes, but it’s a loving relationship between two consenting adults that makes you sick. Yeah, that makes sense. Log in to Reply Yoryla January 23, 2014
Sorry, this pic makes me kind of sick. I love that the show has surged in the ratings, it deserves it. Writing is great and I am really liking the Abby/EJ pairing. At least this show has some hot stories (GH take note). With Kassie coming on I will start watching more, like I have with B &B, another improved show, thanks to Thorsten Kaye. Everyone, please don’t feed the troll. Maybe she’ll go away. Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon January 23, 2014 Guys, please pay heatherwebber10010 none of the attention the psycho bitch craves so desperately. It’s like feeding caged animals at the zoo. Log in to Reply sillytee January 23, 2014 so happy for DOOL.. i have quit a few wishful storyline for this show.. if kristen cant come back, why not bring back sister mary moira.. she would be a hot when it comes to erik canoodling with nicole!! i also want marlena to get a decent story…i wouldnt mind things going back to the james reilly years..as long as it isnt overblown.. the devil possession story was actually one of my all time favorites.. Log in to Reply Ryan-Scott January 23, 2014 Nothing against Jamie Lyn Bauer who I love but I would really LOVE Susan Flannery to do a “pop-in” as Laura Horton when the show hits 50. Are you listening Ken?  Log in to Reply K8LVR January 23, 2014 Ohh Ryan-Scott… I love me some Susan Flannery, she’s what kept me watching B&B for years. But I also love me some Jaime Lyn Bauer – can’t we have both?! Think Becky on “Roseanne” haha Especially since I’m hoping Laura will pop up now and again with her daughter and both grandchildren involved in so much drama! Congrats to DAYS! So loving it right now. Log in to Reply blake3b January 24, 2014 Exactly! As someone told me on a comment board the other day: Don’t feed the troll! Log in to Reply heatherwebber10010 January 24, 2014 Eat me. I don’t like the picture because it’s so super cheesy in a pseudo gay porn way. I’m not so ate up like some of you that I need to expound a self serving political correctness. So bite my ass. Log in to Reply Yoryla January 24, 2014 In other news, what are Eileen Davidson’s news already??? Log in to Reply harlee490 January 24, 2014 This is great news and NBC is doing something right. I have unrelated question for any longtime DOOL viewer…. Maybe it’s me but does the networks pay for studio & production sets? If so I swear the DiMira mansion looks like a carbon copy of the Cory mansion on AW….hmmm….same entrance, staircase on side, entering through two big doorways, fireplace with two French style doors on each side? Am I imagining this because I was a faithful viewer of AW and I remember the Cory homestead…hmmmm :O Log in to Reply gato1 January 24, 2014 Harlee- I’m not sure if they are the same, but I doubt it only because P&G owned AW and Sony owns DAYS. Log in to Reply pferrando January 25, 2014 I was wondering if this WAS Eileen’s news? Or maybe she’s agreed to come back? She’s left us all hanging… Log in to Reply Yoryla January 26, 2014 ^^ pferrando, I’d love to think so, but I honestly don’t think her news is anything but that she’s going back to Y&R… Also, the official twitter handle favorited the tweet. Log in to Reply harlee490 January 27, 2014 What? Eileen is coming back to YR? or Days? I didn’t see any news… Preferably, I want Ashley over Kristin just because YR is need of her character more so now than Days…. Log in to Reply pferrando January 28, 2014 Harlee she had a post on Twitter that she “had news”, but then never followed up with what it was. Days renewal was announced the next day so we all are just speculating… Log in to Reply pferrando January 28, 2014 It pays to speculate sometimes! I just read on Twitter that ED IS coming back to Days. Not too specific about how long, but at least for a story arc.
