General Hospital to Remain on ABC; Ron Carlivati Re-Ups as Head Writer

And the circle is complete. Following renewals for Days of Our Lives, The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, comes word from Deadline that General Hospital has been picked up for another season by ABC.

Unlike its fellow daytime sudsers, GH is owned by the broadcast company which airs it, so there is no official renewal — and pick-ups are done on a season-by-season basis. According to Deadline, the serial will remain on The Mouse House's schedule for the 2014-15 TV season. In other GH news, head writer Ron Carlivati revealed on Twitter he just signed a new pact to continue scripting the almost 51-year-old soap.

Both Days and YR were renewed for multiple seasons/years.

I guess I thought ABC would have had more of a long term plan for GH since it’s doing better in the ratings.

    Just surprised, that’s all.

I don’t trust ABC to do the right thing.

The answer is in the article above.

I did read it, but still thought they could renew for longer.

I guess it doesn’t matter as long as we have four soaps with healthy ratings.

I’m still waiting for someone to be brave and announce a NEW soap.
Yay for them. My issue today is Brad and Lucas having a one night stand. They really want us to believe that shit.
How dare you! That is an example of the great writing. Lucas is in town one day he’s already had a one night stand and is in the middle of a love triangle. He came to town because his sister was kidnapped. He just found out that his father is alive. He just told us he’s an adult who pays taxes. He’s a legacy character. And now he’s in the middle of Brad and Felix’s relationship; two minor players who no one cares about. What drama! What a brilliant twist! And their gay! How progressive!Except Ron writes gay men in offensive shallow stereotypes, busy bodies like Felix and slimy oversexed horn dogs like Brad, and now Lucas, a legacy character and a physician is now a horn dog as well.

I don’t know if you read the synopsis above, but this is different than the other three soaps. GH is the only soap that is owned entirely by the network, ABC. Picking up GH happens the same way primetime shows do, season by season.

CBS and NBC do not own their soaps like ABC. They have to lease the rights to air them. It is not uncommon for them to lease for more than one year, when they have to re-up their deals. ABC on the other hand renews their daytime shows the same way they renew their prime time shows. One year at a time, or in some cases such as brand new shows, they do a half season. They don’t want to be committed for a full year until they see how the show fairs.

Soap writers (not just Ron) write plenty of characters in offensive shallow stereotypes. Carly sleeps with a guy she despises. Morgan gets dumped by his wife and then sleeps with her mother. Britt not only tricks Patrick into thinking he’s going to be a father, she steals one of Lulu’s eggs to do it. Lucy has a spat with her husband and jumps into bed with Scott. Need I go on?

If Brad and Lucas are “horn dogs”, they’re in good company. In the context of a soap, that’s called inclusiveness.

GH is owned by ABC, they don’t renew shows they own they just continue production. The media says renewed but it isn’t they just didn’t cancel it. You notice until they cancelled AMC/OLTL we never heard about GH being “renewed” or continued it just did.

The NBC and CBS shows are owned by Sony so in order to continue on NBC/CBS as networks have to renew and obviously feel good enough about them to give them multi year deal. ABC doesn’t have to do this- this could mean they end next year or they could be on for the next 20 it doesn’t its continuing until the announce cancellation.

why wouldn’t he have a one night stand? One it fits with the family he was raised in. My God his Uncle was a pimp (and apparently spent his entire marriage cheating on his wife with hookers), his mother a prostate and his sister is a whore who slept with is dad and had no name sex with brothers in a bar.

Not like the Spencers aren’t willing to sleep around.

ITs not about him having a one night stand. Believe me I’m gay and have had many. SO I know it happens but someone as hot as Lucas with not so hot Brad. That’s what I don’t believe. I know it happens but not in fictional Port Charles. I know they have to have a gay love triangle but this is so not believable. I would have taken Felix over Brad. But in the Gay World they would not put a brotha with the hot white boy unless it was written by a negro. I’m just saying because I live it every day in Texas.

How many straight characters hop in the sack with people all the time, including some of their first scenes? Anyone remember that Ned boned his Aunt Monica or that Carly boinked half the men in Port Charles within a year or that Patrick was a player when he came on the show?

Brad and Felix have been on for a year+, and neither have had sex that we know of, despite Brad’s best efforts. Why shouldn’t Brad hop in the sack with hot-to-trot Lucas? It would be abnormal on a soap to NOT go to bed with someone ASAP. And, people have sex for lots of reasons, including coping with stressful life situations.

It’s called a soap opera. Stop taking it so seriously!!!

unlike CBS and NBC, ABC owns its soap, i.e. it doesn’t have to negotiate and sign deals (who would they negotiate them with? themselves? i mean, i know ABC soaps like their DID storylines, but that doesn’t mean that applies to ABC executives) where both parties have to agree and you give and take, which, in order to avoid having to do that every year, i suppose, you do for several years. ABC doesn’t have to do anything, just decide whether it wants it on its schedule or not.

Thanks everyone for the clarification. I get it. I guess I’ll always be suspicious of ALL the networks since they slaughtered four iconic shows in such a short time.

I’m still pissed about ATWT the most. That show was THE soap throughout the 60′s and most of the 70′s. And to not demonstrate that they really wanted to keep it, and then show what they were doing to make it happen, frustrates me to this day.

I haven’t watched today but I’d say many of us have had one-night stands with people uglier or prettier/handsomer than ourselves.

Lucas is upset and some people when upset eat too much or not enough. drink too much, take drugs or act out. And some people have random sex.

I am amazed how many of us expect our soap characters to act as if they’re not on a soap

heatherwebber10010, Rex Lee and B.D. Wong are two actors who immediately come to mind who have played gay Asians on TV (Lee in Suburgatory and Entourage; Wong in Law & Order: SVU and possibly Oz…I don’t think his sexuality was directly addressed, but I always thought of the character as being a celibate gay priest).

I am happy GH got renewed but wish they let Ron go. This soap is horrible. It is so unrecognizable and so are the characters that he didn’t hire. I want to see stories with the vets, not the newbies that I don’t give a crap about. I want love, romance. All we get is people having sex without the build up of love, just lust. I don’t think he knows how to write for couples in love.

As someone who used to love OLTL’s Kish, my only gripe about Brad and Lucas is that I am so tired of the off screen crap. Why not show Lucas bumping into Brad after he left Kelly’s diner?

ITA. I thought for sure that I missed a scene where Brad and Lucas met each other and hooked up, especially since my DVR has been missing some recordings this week. I praise Ron and Frank for many things I love about the show, but I DON’T like this style of moving stories forward offscreen! It is jolting and feels choppy. Soaps can still pack in a lot of story beats while remaining smooth and fluid.

The fact is Ron and Frank saved GH. And as much as people say he’s not using the vets enough, let’s remember the previous regime that killed off many of those very same vets. Or treated them horribly.

You can’t run a soap in 2014 with the exact same characters you had in 2004 or 1994. Is there too much camp? For sure. But I love the fact that somedays Scotty Baldwin is on my screen. And Felicia is back and not a candidate as worst mother of the year. Anna is back and in charge.

I so agree with many of the comments on here regarding Lucas, Brad and Felix.

I refuse to believe that Lucas would chose Brad although I do want Lucas with Brad because Felix is a horrible person, I just don’t see Lucas sweating Brad. Now if Brad was the one pursuing Lucas and he just so happened to rock Lucas world, then I would believe it.

But like one comment says, what one night stand comes to your job to kiss you hi?

Also, there have been plenty of gay Asian characters on tv. Heck B.D Wong is gay.

Now that they have resigned RC and Frank, I expect more campiness to ensue. Next year Casey the Alien will be coming back to PC.

Thank God for the “shocking” one night stand. I am so so so sick of all gay people on soaps being saints.. Bianca AMC, Nuke ATWT, Will and Sonny DaYs, Matt Melrose Place, Steven Dynasty, Fish OLTL, Natalia GL!! ENOUGH!! It’s 2014 gay people are not saints and have full lives just like their straight counterparts. It is NOT the 90s anymore Everyone should realize that people are people.

The whole point of the Lucas-Brad kiss was to give us a surprise. That would have been ruined if they took us plodding all the way through their meeting and getting together. That would having been boring.

  26. Avatar of stefanstavros

I disagree that it would have been boring. They could have very effectively shown a random hookup or just a meeting and then surprise the audience that Lucas actually wants more than a one-nighter.
Both Days and YR were renewed for multiple seasons/years.
CBS and NBC need to sign contracts with Sony for those shows and any contract involves negotiation. Sony probably insisted on more than one year and based on current ratings, CBS and NBC were willing to go along. ABC owns GH outright, there are no contracts involved, thus no negotiation of terms. Every program Disney/ABC owns directly gets a one season commitment, this gives them maximum latitude to get rid of things that stop performing well before it starts costing them major money.
I guess I thought ABC would have had more of a long term plan for GH since it’s doing better in the ratings.
    Just surprised, that’s all.
ABC knows that the increase in ratings could be a temporary blip caused by the fallout of Robin’s return and the apex of a few other stories. Now that Robin’s leaving, Franco, Heather, Kiki, the Jerome idiots, and SparklyPrincessSabrina are gonna be front and center again with no Robin or Robert and probably precious little Anna, Monica, AJ, Liz, etc. to balance it out. Ratings could sink like a stone in a matter of weeks as a result especially since the writing is so horrible.
I don’t trust ABC to do the right thing.
There is no universal right thing to do here. If GH’s numbers stay up, higher than anything that might replace it, keeping it is the right thing to do. If they sink like a stone and stay down for a protracted period, and that could easily happen now that it’s certain that the hack Carlivati isn’t going anywhere, cancelling it would be the right thing to do. ABC is a business not a charity. If the show can’t pay for itself it won’t be on the schedule nor should it.
I did read it, but still thought they could renew for longer.
I guess it doesn’t matter as long as we have four soaps with healthy ratings.
Technically they could renew longer but why would they? Since they own the show they can do whatever they want and given the instability of the genre, what they want is to have maximum flexibility to cut their losses if things go south again. It makes perfect business sense. To do otherwise would be foolish.
I’m still waiting for someone to be brave and announce a NEW soap.
You’re probably gonna be waiting forever. Daytime soaps are just too expensive with too small a fanbase to invest new resources in. The current soaps are doing so well because so many others were cancelled, forcing their fans to either watch the four that remain or give up on the genre altogether. Put two or three in the every daytime slot again and the ratings will drop for all of them again. A new soap would find it almost impossible to carve out a niche if it were placed opposite Y&R, DOOL, GH, and/or BB, shows with decades of history and nostalgia amongst their fans. Take out the nostalgia factor and a lot of people would tune out. Honestly, the only soap left that’s actually good at the moment is Days. A new soap would be very hard pressed to get as many people to watch as who watch the remaining shows out of habit and loyalty. Just look at how ratings go up when beloved veterans are center stage, a new soap wouldn’t have that phenomenon to rely on to boost ratings at crucial times nor would they have a safety net of a certain minimum viewers who watch purely out of nostalgia. It would be facing the same hurdles that new primetime shows do and the vast majority of them fail.

I am just happy that GH was renewed. two years ago the soaps were almost dieing and all of them now are getting higher ratings so there is an audience out there that still love the soaps.

I sometimes question Ron C’s writing, there are times when the show is SOO good and other times where it becomes too cartoonish. But, like the whole Dr O as chief of staff, at first I was like, this is just unbelievable, how stupid. But, I am starting to get it and I think it will lead up to some good stories ahead.

  30. Avatar of pferrando

Wow Rose…thanks for taking the time to comment, so thoroughly I might add, to my post.

The ratings for all shows really don’t depend on the other. I don’t think a lot of people are watching any of the four, just because they are the only four left. Most didn’t start watching YR, for example because OLTL was cancelled. Most soap fans watch out of habit.

If CBS introduced another soap, I’d watch as eagerly as if NBC did. Watching something from the start is much easier than starting in the middle. But if it’s not my taste (Passions, for example), I’ll turn it off after trying for a month or so.

So sure, today we may not see another show, but if ratings do keep increasing across the board why wouldn’t it happen again?

I think since the other 3 soaps made announcements and many peeps don’t know that GH doesn’t have to since they are owned by ABC; they just did especially since their other 2 shows were cancelled some fans may have gotten nervous since this is ABC’ last soap.

correct me if I’m wrong but they use to didn’t make formal press releases re: renewal.

Lucas/Brad’s hook up was told in flashback, sitting at the Floating Rib they met…where Brad told him his father was a mobster he talked about how he was raised…it was extensive… I just would like one relationship not to start in a triangle. I’m really tired of them on this show and there are several playing out simultaneously; I really don’t get excited about them because its pretty much the norm. It should be a variety. of ways couples get together not immediately (or very soon after) in a triangular situation.

  32. Avatar of TV Gord

The Lucas/Brad flashbacks were very good. This is a good lesson to not have knee-jerk reactions to one show.

One more thought: On one hand, I don’t entirely disagree with those who don’t like mob-related stuff. On the other hand, Maura West and William deVry are the best hires GH has made in years!
