The Haves and the Have Nots Scores 3.4 Million Viewers

Tyler Perry's The Haves and the Have Nots continues to build ratings momentum. The OWN soap opera scored a record-breaking 3.4 million viewers, which made it the most-watched telecast in the series' history.

The cable show also did well in the all-important 25-54 women demo. It was the No. 1 show on cable in the demo and came in at No. 2 for all TV shows, behind The Biggest Loser's season finale.

I’m a Tika fan so she pulled me in it. I’m just on S1 Eppy 16 though because I didn’t know anything about it so I’m catching up..I just like the writing …

I have to admit the acting isn’t all there with some of the characters but for the most part they’re OK; I think it would be phenomenal with better actors in some of the roles but I’m good…

Hannah just needs a good lay she acts older than she is….I like the theme of friendships so I guess that’ another reason I’m drawn to the show. Its real soapy..

Oh maybe she has gotten laid by now so has Hannah got laid yet? LoL

Well Oprah wasn’t so keen on scripted dramas she wanted her network filled with reality shows…so it seems to me she’ the one with the rude awakening after all those reality shows tanked her network.

When soap fans went to her to save OLTL/AMC she took the high road (I’m sure the legalese of these shows came into play) however she was like Oh no that’s not the vision of the network or something but when all is said its ironic that a (scripted) soap opera is bringing in the #s.

The girl that plays Amanda was the worse of the bunch but now that she’s cray cray, the bad acting works.

Oprah made a financial decision. She didn’t have enough money to pay for a daily scripted soap that had low ratings at the time. She started out with reruns of the shows that she owns and reality shows because they are frankly cheaper.

It was a reality show that gave her channel a lift, “Sweetie Pies”. She had to change direction on her channel, like all channels have done. TLC isn’t the same channel that it was when it started and neither is AMC. Fox isn’t the same channel that it was when it started.

That being said, Tyler Perry is known for making cheap productions. Shoe string budget is his middle name. This show is also weekly, and seasonal. The economics of producing a weekly and seasonal scripted series are different than a daily scripted series.

That being said, I don’t think it is ironic at all. I think it is growing pains.

They need to expand the cast. The show still has waaaay too much dialogue for a weekly series. That might help to downplay the obvious deficiencies of certain actors.

I agree that the Hannah character is just awful, but there are a lot of women in the target audience, Tyler Perry fans, who probably identify with her.

LoL OK… The best thing that ever happened to Benny was his coma; they didn’t have to kill the boy if he woke up after the accident looking like Cornelius Smith, Jr.

The girl who plays Amanda throws me off because when I first started watching, I thought she was really bad. However, her recent performances as “Coo-coo” Amanda have made me change my mind; like maybe Perry told her to play the role as if she (the actress) were completely clueless LMAO. I think she plays crazy well enough, like “I just escaped a mental ward crazy”, and NOT much mustache twirling crazy.

I don’t think Wyatt OR Jeffrey are bad, they’re pretty descent actors IMO, NOT AMAZING, but OK. My biggest issue with Jeffrey was when he fell on the floor at the end of last season. LMAO If I were Tyler Perry, I would’ve beat his ass and made him do that shit over.

And well, Celine DID star on Passions LoL. As for Schneider, that shit made him a star in the 80s, but yeah, he ain’t good neither. LMAO He almost reminds me of John McCook.

Good for Tyler Perry. I watch the show every week but mostly for comedy purposes. The only one who can really act is Tika, Hannah is the worst she is like some old slave woman singing old negro spirituals, she is a walking stereo type. But a lot of the bad acting may have more to do with Tyler Perry’s writing, he has the subtlety of a bulldozer, the plots are very predictable. But its still entertaining its almost like a spoof of a soap. I think though that if TP ever wrote for any of the daytime soaps, his writing would surely spell the end for them.

You know what’s funny? I realized that I didn’t list the woman that plays Hannah as a bad actor. For me, her role rings the truest, but then I was raised around that archetype. It rings more than true to me. I recall being a child and having issues with my leg, and my mother brought me to church and all of the church mothers gathered in a circle around me and prayed. So for me, her character, along with Tika, are the most real.

    Go fig.

I don’t think Crystal Fox (Hannah) is a bad actress at all. She seems the most real of all of them (probably because I’ve met people just like her in my life).

The show’s like a train wreck; no matter how bad it is, you just can’t look away. The writing is often off-kilter(what doctor leads off with “You better think about making funeral arrangements” when asked about the condition of a patient?) and campy, the sets are cheap looking and the direction and pacing are terrible(too many dialogue-heavy scenes that aren’t broken up and last WAY too long). And having said that, I still LOVE IT.

    As for the acting…..

I’ll start with the women. I’d say Tika Sumpter and Crystal Fox are the best of the bunch(despite the fact that I’m tiring of Hannah’s sermonizing)though I find Angela Robinson and Eva Tamargo the most entertaining(especially Robinson, whose character has the best dialogue, often delivered with a not-so-subtle touch of over-the-top that makes it highly enjoyable). I waver back and forth on Renee Lawless; some times I find her decent and other times I feel like there’s not enough bite behind some of her dialogue. Worst by a country mile though is the girl who plays Amanda; she truly seems as though she doesn’t know where she is from scene-to-scene and, as I’ve said before, she may just be the worst actress on television right now, daytime or primetime.

Regarding the men, both Schneider and Parros are usually pretty good. And what can you say about the younger guys? They’re all hot as hell and prone
to bouts of wide-eyed cluelessness. The two who play Wyatt and Jeffrey have their moments but the guy who plays Benny, gorgeous though he may be, is pretty weak.
