HomeTVCBSMeredith Baxter Heads to The Young and the Restless Jillian Bowe August 4, 2014 CBS, CBS Daytime, Comings & Goings, News, Soap Opera, The Young and The Restless, TV 25 Comments TV mom Meredith Baxter is making her way to Genoa City. According to TV Guide Magazine’s Michael Logan, the sitcom legend has joined the cast of The Young and the Restless. Baxter will play Maureen, an alcohol-swilling dame, who befriends Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott). Maureen is described as a smart, middle-class, working woman. She comes off as a sympathetic soul, but is very manipulative. Look for Maureen to have a few “family ties” in Genoa City. Baxter’s first air date is slated for Sept. 8. Log in to Reply pennywise555 August 4, 2014 Probably, Y&R has become the Stitch, Dylan, and Chelsea show. MB looks like she could be Katherine’s long lost sister. I’d love to see her sparing with Jill in the mausoleum. I miss strong savvy women who made things happen, and had ambitions and desires of their own. The Jill I know would be making things happen for Billy with one of her convoluted schemes, AND running Chancellor Industries, AND manipulating her lover/husband. But instead all we are given is boring teary-eyed women being weak, and dependent on men. I’m tired of weak Nikki and all her boo-hooing. Will the Y&R hero’s, Dylan & Victor, team up to save her? I’ll bet they will. SNOOZE. Log in to Reply Jon August 4, 2014 I just got through watching the complete series of Bridget Loves Bernie (1972-1973)! I also loved her in Family. Looking forward to seeing Meredith act with MTS. Log in to Reply Iriswasmyfirst August 4, 2014 For some reason I think this is gonna be great. May I ask how you found Bridget Loves Bernie. Is it online somewhere? I watched this as a kid. Log in to Reply Jon August 4, 2014 I bought it on amazon. Bridget Loves Bernie The Complete Series. Audra Lindley as Amy Fitzgerald was a hoot! Log in to Reply DanMan869 August 4, 2014 Normally I might be rolling my eyes at more “prime time stunt casting,” but I think that Meredith Baxter is a terrific actress and will definitely bring her A-game to Y&R! I wonder if she was encouraged to audition (to be submitted–I doubt MB had to audition in the traditional sense) because of TV hubby Michael Gross’ previous stint as River Baldwin? I must say that it makes me feel good to know that actors in Hollywood are more than happy to seek and accept work in daytime. No, MB isn’t in massive demand these days, but, again, this is a talented actress coming to the show. I, for one, could not be happier. Not only does Nikki need a “friend” (how ever manipulative) but the likehood is that she is Maureen Russell, mother of Stitch/Ben and Kelly. Good casting, too, as she is blonde like both of them AND age-appropriate to be their mother. Log in to Reply angrierblackerman August 4, 2014 She’s fantastic. Always was a favorite of mine since Family Ties, and numerous TV movies! I can get behind this casting! Nikki needs a BFF to drink and complain with! Log in to Reply bobbyew August 4, 2014 I see her as Sean Youngs character a few years ago who was Victors friend and became his Assistant and ended up going to jail for some reason or another. My show is good but it is getting a little repetitive. Log in to Reply ChrisGa August 4, 2014 With the glaring difference being that Meredith Baxter is a first-rate actress–if you never saw her as real-life convicted murderer Betty Broderick in those two TV movies then you’re missing out–and Sean Young……well, isn’t. Kelly didn’t seem to have much of a good impression regarding her mother when Jack questioned her about it last week so if that’s who Baxter is playing then it should be good stuff. Log in to Reply blake3b August 4, 2014 I like Meredith Baxter and anything she is in and I’m sure her as Nikki’s drinking buddy is going to be awesome! I will definitely have to watch for their scenes, and that’s probably going to be it. But of course my first thought when I saw the post that MAB was back producing the show because of her constant stunt casting. Log in to Reply hey mon August 4, 2014 Good choice. She is a real life bisexual, maybe JFP will have her guiding Nikki to the ‘other half’ of her personality. Log in to Reply bobbyew August 4, 2014 @Chrisga, yes she brought it as Betty Broderick. 2 of my fav tv movies. I love Elise Keaton. Log in to Reply pumpkin August 4, 2014 I also watch Betty Broderick when possible. 2 of my fav tv movies also. She is talented. I can’t wait to see her. She has the grit talent that Judith Light has. I can watch either of them in ANYTHING. The talent gets better with both of them with age. No wonder they were all excited. Log in to Reply marknsprmo August 5, 2014 Meridith has a connection to daytime as well. She was married to David Birney whom she costarred with in Bridget Loves Bernie. Before he was on that show he was a major player on daytime on Love is a Many Splendid Thing in a red hot love triangle between Leslie Charleson and Donna Mills. I hope they keep her around. She is a lovely talented lady that has a broad range of acting ability. Hopefully they will utilize her comedic abilities as well! Y&R has always had a few funny women on the show such as Jill and Phyllis. Log in to Reply Dyllan August 5, 2014 IMO, she sounds like Meggie 2.0. And count me as one who is sick of Stitch and Chelsea and Dylan. Log in to Reply RealityCheck 33 August 5, 2014 Oh brother, another Hollywood has-been stunt casting on Y&R. Gee, it never ends. JFP’s desperation is so obvious now. Not the least bit compelling. Maybe Joanie from Happy Days can drop by soon! Now that will bring in the ratings! Pathetic. Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon August 5, 2014 I’ve always been a huge fan of Meredith Baxter, but my first loyalty is always to the soaps. So I’ll say what I always say when Y&R does this: There are dozens of unemployed, veteran actresses that built their careers in this genre. Why not hire them for the part? Log in to Reply harlee490 August 5, 2014 More new faces in GC and we don’t need….gag me To SoapA’s point I absolutely agree there are many now unemployed, loyal to the soap genre which could had fit the bill and exactly make it more exciting to me….Colleen Zink, Anna Stuart, Susan Lucci! Log in to Reply kgdallas August 5, 2014 Wow…. JFP is really trying hard isn’t she? LMBO!!! Stunt casting for ratings at it’s finest….. Meredith Baxter is too good for Y&R! Log in to Reply BrookeKKL August 6, 2014 I bet her character will be Kelly and Ben`s mother like many of you said. But I also believe she is responsible for their fathers dead. Stitch knows that and is protecting his mother. That`s why he confessed killing his old man. Log in to Reply kenerly1 August 6, 2014 Too good for Y&R? why would anyone say that and be a fan of the show? Many, many great actors have come out of the soaps Log in to Reply kgdallas August 7, 2014 I say that because Meredith Baxter is a star… and a big one at that. I just feel that someone of her caliber and talents can do something bigger and better than a stint on a soap, I mean I don’t think this is a contract role. No disrespect to her in the least. If this is what she wants, then more power to her. I totally support her. I’m huge fan of Meredith, always have been. Maybe I would have seen this new differently if the current state of Y&R wasn’t such a train wreck! Just my opinion. Log in to Reply FoxCrane August 8, 2014 kgdallas – Baxter certainly has name recognition, but she’s no bigger star than Ray Wise (Ian), who’s apparently having the time of his life on Y&R. (And hey! For what it’s worth, he’s actually in the Top 5000 on IMDb’s StarMeter.) .. Baxter recently did some episodes for that MTV cable series Finding Carter. That show only pulls in about 1,200,000 viewers. So why not do Y&R, which gets nearly 4X that many? When an actor gets to be a certain age, keeping one’s self out there, working, and in front of an audience is important. And the good ones know soaps are hard work and much like stagecraft. Much praise to Donna Mills who in her recent Daytime Emmy appearance said how much working her first soap role on Secret Storm taught her and why she loves being on GH today. Log in to Reply kgdallas August 7, 2014 this news….. sorry about that typo…. no way to go back and edit after posting! Log in to Reply pferrando August 7, 2014 I’d prefer this be Phyllis and Avery’s Mom. That’s more fun to watch than another new character coming on to support two of the newer characters. I think it’s kind of an odd choice myself, but we’ll see how she does with Nikki. Drunk Nikki is always fun to watch.
