Good Morning America Touts 52 Week Run as No. 1 Morning Show

Good Morning America's battle with The Today Show has been well documented, but the week of August 12 marked GMA's fifty-second consecutive week as the No. 1 morning show in total viewers. The last time GMA experienced such a run was between 1991 and 1992.

During the week of August 12, GMA topped Today by 808,000 total viewers. It beat Today in the 25-54 demo by 199,000 viewers during the same period.

CBS This Morning Grows Among 25-54 Demo

CBS has been the third wheel of daytime ratings for years, but this year CBS This Morning continues to make strides in growing its audience opposite of leaders Good Morning America and Today. The show touted its improved performance in a press release.

CBS THIS MORNING posted double-digit year-to-year percentage gains among adults 25-54 (+14%), the demographic most important to those who advertise in news, as well as viewers (+16%), households (+17%) and women 25-54 (+13%), according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for the week ending July 19, 2013. CBS THIS MORNING added +380,000 viewers compared to the same week last year and also improved its competitive position with NBC, closing the gap by 330,000 viewers.

CBS This Morning’s Ratings Improve by Featuring Actual News

After years stymied in third place, CBS is finally beginning to experience growth in the a.m. CBS This Morning, which premiered in January 2012, is experiencing year-over-year ratings gains by focusing on tabloid free news, according to TV Guide

The year-to-year audience growth for King and coanchors Charlie Rose and Norah O'Donnell has been as high as 39 percent in recent weeks. With an average of 3 million viewers, CBS scored its best May-sweep morning-ratings performance since 1994. While well behind ABC's 5.7 million and NBC's 4.8 million viewers, the numbers indicate that CBS This Morning has effectively positioned itself to pick up disenchanted Today viewers who may find GMA too frothy. "People come up to me and say, 'You guys actually do news,'" says O'Donnell.

Good Morning America Dominates Today During May Sweeps

It looks like Good Morning America’s dominance over the wounded Today is becoming more permanent. According to The Hollywood Reporter, GMA ruled the ratings roost during May, in both total viewers and the 25-54 adult demographic. It was GMA's biggest win over their NBC nemesis since 1994.
GMA averaged 2.1 million viewers in the key demo, up 2 percent from the same period last year and 110,000 viewers north of Today. The last May sweep that saw a victory of that size was in 1994. CBS This Morning came in a distant third, just under a million shy of GMA.
