PC #76: Backdooring The Upfronts

On today's Pop Confidential podcast Jamey Giddens, Luke Kerr, Jillian Bowe, Regan Cellura and Melodie Aikels dish about the TV Upfronts and weigh in on which dramas and comedies they are looking forward to.
Diversity is in at the broadcast networks, but will viewers tune in for shows like Black-ish and Fresh Off the Boat? Will Katherine Heigl torpedo her new show State of Affairs? Can Gotham be successful without an adult Bruce Wayne as Batman? Will The Mysteries of Laura be another flop for Debra Messing?

Is Empire the primetime black soap Jamey has been waiting for? Luke is most excited about The Flash speeding onto The CW.  Everyone is excited about Gotham and How to Get Away With Murder.

All this and much more on today's Pop Confidential podcast!

Martha Byrne’s ‘Gotham’ to Return With All-New Episodes for TV and Digital Media

Long before any big money suits realized soaps had the potential to take the web by storm, pioneers like Martha Byrne figured out diehard suds lovers would follow the format online; which is why we are absolutely thrilled to learn the As The World Turns and General Hospital alum's Emmy-nominated fashion drama Gotham is coming back with new original episodes for TV and digital media!

The 2011 Creative Arts Daytime Emmys were handed out on Friday, June 17 in Los Angeles at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. While broadcast soaps General Hospital, The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful and All My Children took home various technical awards; it was Crystal Chappell’s Venice that picked up the Outstanding Special Class Short Format Daytime Creative Arts Emmy. General Hospital took home the most wins at the Creative Arts Daytime Emmys.

Venice and Gotham Receive Daytime Emmy Nods!

Major props to the creative forces behind webisoaps Venice and Gotham. Both sudsers received nominations for Oustanding Special Class Short Format, and will go up against Disney Channel's Tasty Time With Zefronk. In light of the recent blows the daytime soap opera industry and its fans have endured, I expect more and more soap fans to be flocking online for their sudsy fix, and shows like Venice and Gotham could find even more popularity and support as a result. Congrats to Venice co-creators Crystal Chappell (Carly, DAYS) and Kimmy Turrisi, and Gotham's Martha Byrne.

Perry Moves in for The Kill on Episode 11 of Gotham!

What do you get when you cross an As The World Turns vet with an Another World alum? One pretty hot smooch! Perry (Matt Crane) wants Catherine (Martha Byrne) to go out on a date with him. When she hesitates he decides a nice buss just might do the trick with his Nicole Miller co-worker. Meanwhile, Crane's former AW cougar Anna Stuart (Elizabeth)—they were one of my all-time Bay City couples, Matt Cory and Donna Love— warns her wheeling, dealing son Richard (Michael Park) about that deep-pocketed beeyouch Dinah (Maeve Kinkead).
