The CW Shifts to Go After Male Viewers, Telenovela Fans

The CW is trying to grow its viewership beyond teenage girls. One of the new programs debuting in the fall will be Flash, based on the DC Comics superhero. Flash stars Glee’s Grant Gustin as the super-speedster. The cast will also feature Tom Cavanagh and Jesse L. Martin.
The network is hoping its new action series will attract more male eyeballs. The CW has a high concentration of male viewers at the moment, thanks to their other superhero drama, Arrow, which Flash was spun off from.
It looks like The CW might also want to lure back more adult viewers with Jane the Virgin. The channel’s other new series is based on the popular Venezuelan telenovela, Juana la Virgen

Jane centers on a devout young woman, played by Gina Rodriguez of The Bold and the Beautiful fame.  After a horrible mix-up at the hospital, Jane finds out she was artificially inseminated and is now pregnant.  Also starring in Jane the Virgin are Reign’s Yael Grobglas and Justin Baldoni, who appeared on Single Ladies from 2011-2012.

Jane the Virgin will air after The Originals on Monday.  Flash will precede the long-running Supernatural on Tuesday nights.
