Sooo MAB and co have done plenty of things I”m sure had Bill Bell rolling over in his grave, but yesterday’s show (thursday) did something really subtle (at least it was subtle to me)

They had Jeffrey Bardwell coming to Genoa City with amnesia, in a truck with a stranger he’d thumbed a ride with. This was the VERY FIRST SCENE of The Young and the Restless in 1973. Brad Elliott was in a truck thumbing a ride after having been hijacked and badly beaten. He arrives in Genoa City and goes to Pierre’s for food and after eating, says he can’t pay the food, until someone (I think his name was Stuart Brooks) arrives and pays for the meal. YESTERDAY, Jeffrey was in a truck (same camera angles and everything) riding to Genoa City with some guy, he has amnesia, and he tells the guy that his name is Brad Elliott or something (or maybe I heard wrong)…and then he goes to Crimson Lights, eats, and then says he can’t pay for the food. Then Jill, the longest running character on Y&R, shows up and pays for his food.

I dont’ like a good majority of what MAB has done on Y&R in the last couple of years, but I thought that was kind of cute and a nice little nod to history that only the Y&R junkies would “get”….did anyone else catch this and recognize the parallels? LOL

    Stoney07–

Maria Bell should put you on her payroll! :D :D :D :D It’s actually kinda cute how you seem to always try to find the good in this show when there seems to be slim to none existent!!

I am not sure if this was a real homage on her part, or if it was the work of one of her more SKILLED script-writers. Left to her own devices, would she have had the foresight to write such a scene? I dunno. I don’t trust this woman anymore. I have come to the conclusion that she simply doesn’t know what the heck she’s doing and that her FELLOW writers, who all work under her, cover up a lot of her garbage.

I was not even alive back in 1973 when the show premiered and have never seen the premiere episode, but based on your synopsis, it does seem eerily similar!

LOL. U didn’t hear? I’m actually MAB. But don’t tell anybody else.

But nooo…I try to find good in all the soaps because I don’t want to see anymore of them to go off the air. I think a lot of people misunderstand my optimism and love for Y&R and mistake it for me defending MAB (which I don’t)…but yeah, I wish I were on the payroll.

It gets a little tiring trying to defend the show sometimes, but I guess I just like to be contradictory to everything else I read…it makes for an interesting night. heheh

Here is the original truck scene on YouTube, for those who did not see it before:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzYSq-OIzDs

Someone even commented there yesterday with the same observation you made, Stoney, that yesterday’s opening mirrored this. I’m a bit behind, so I probably won’t see yesterday’s show until tonight.

There used to be a clip on YouTube of the longer scene, with Brad Elliot not having the money to pay for his food, but it’s not working right now.

I totally caught the scene and was amazed that Y&R actually stepped up their game like this. Like Stoney, I try my best to defend Y&R, but here lately I’ve been the soap’s biggest critic. If I could join in on a DC podcast, y’all would have heard me go OFF about Y&R’s sad state of affairs the past two years.

However, with the cancellation of OLTL, many soap fans are tuning into Y&R so that’s reason for them to go big or go home. To me, I think either Kola Boof or Ron Carlivati ghost wrote that scene and most of this week’s Y&R because it was FIYAH….

MAB, she’s trying. She is trying. That is a pretty good Brad Elliot catch. The show is getting better, after hitting the lowest of lows with the “Delia and the transplant” s/l. So, since there is only one way to go, up from October, the show is heading upwards.

All I gotta say is if you want to see a glimmer of old school Y&R, watch Monday’s episode!

Stoney07, GAWD yes, didn’t see the scene you was describing recently but I know the scene from the first episode of Y&R, I was 12 when Y&R debuted. Brad Elliot gosh! That takes me back because of the Brad\Leslie\Laurie. I like Brad, and Stuart Brooks (L&L’s father)…sigh when Y&R was a baby. My question is did MAB using it as a nod to her dad-in-law or once again trying to recycle Bill’s ideas because she doesn’t have any of her own? The things she has used from Bill’s play book she truly ruined so I wonder?

Y&R is better, much better than in 2011 — which was the all-time low. It seems that MAB must have gotten some control over the show back, or is better at ‘falling in line’.

Her call to ‘off’ Cane in the early part of last year has been totally reversed, and look at Lily and Cane sitting on their couch. It’s like last year’s shooting at this exact time never happened on those church steps. And what a lousy story-line the intro of Gen was, with the ‘Caleb thing’, and ‘the Samantha thing’, and the ‘Cane’s ghost thing’, was.

But the lowest was Delia’s leukemia story-line. Can anyone ever say enough bad things about it?

So, so far the month of January has shown a great deal of promise, and this last week has been way above average.
And it looks like ol Nikki did indeed kill Diane, and Deacon is the one who smashed her skull. Not something I would have written, because smashing skulls is very ‘Patty-ish’. But, I’m satisfied.

    Alstonboy,

What in the world do you mean by “delusional”?

Are you implying that she wasn’t the head of an international spy ring, secretly married to Osama Bin Laden, the daughter of African royalty, and all the other stuff?  ;)

Yeah, I have to wonder considering the spoilers I’ve read for Monday…..

Your answer is the latter – DEFINITELY THE LATTER!

I have seen Monday’s US episode already (Thank you, Global Canada!) and man, Maria Arena Bell and her co-hacks are plagiarizing from stories that go back nearly 30 years!! Once you see the shizz that happens on Monday, you are going to be scratching your head and going “This seems awfully familiar” and Where have I seen this before?” Aside from the lame recycling/rehashing of past storylines, MAB and her co-hacks are also guilty of not just ‘dumbing-down’ core legacy characters (If Jack Abbott becomes any dumber…!!), they are guilty of pushing newer “pop culture” inspired characters down our gullet (Angelina is such a “Snooki/Jersey Shore” derivation & Tucker McCall smacks of Donald Trump inspiration!) While the loyal “Y & R” viewers keep rejecting these one-dimensional creations, they just keep creating them. What really stinks is that THE POWERS THAT BE ARE AWARE THE SHOW IS SUCKING A** AND REFUSE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!! WHY?? BECAUSE MARIA IS A BELL BY MARRIAGE & HER HUSBAND RUNS BELL DRAMATIC SERIAL, INC!

PS – I’m also still not buying Genie Francis & Daniel “Please leave already” Goddard as Mother & Son – they are not selling it!

    Y&R! Y&R! Y&R!

Now, having said that. Monday’s ep is pretty good. For those who watched back in 2000, twill remind you of Tricia coming down the aisle, with everyone thinking she was Victoria. The Newmans had this kind of wedding in 2000, the Abbotts going to have it in 2012. But the writing was tight, to the point, and good.

Liking Genie Francis as Cane’s mother. True, she’s not Laura Spencer (St Laura), but she still doesn’t seem to be the crazed maniac walking around her mansion listening to loud music that we were introduced to in June. It will be very interesting to see how Gen owning Beauty of Nature plays out. I’m glad we have Cane’s mom staying permanently, gives him more to do than interact with Lily.

Apparently, you are not a hard person to entertain – sorry, but I am tired of MAB and her co-hacks re-use/recycle/re-image previous storylines as their own!! All I keep thinking is “WE’VE SEEN THIS ALREADY!!!” Yes, Tricia Dennison donned Victoria’s wedding dress and attempted to marry Ryan McNeil herself, but ended up shooting Ryan, culminating with his death. Do we have to see this whole thing played out with different characters AGAIN?!?

    *CHOKE* *SPUTTER* *PUKE*

Sorry – you must be in the minority – Genie and her half-baked character of Genevieve Atkinson were D.O.A. – her motivations were so unclear and she has no direction. Worse off is that if they keep her, they will probably keep one of the show’s weakest links – Daniel Goddard – UGH!!!

I am enjoying GEnie Francis now, especially now that she seems to have somewhat of a life on the show…(owning Beauty of Nature) I think it integrated her into the cast well, and it’s made her seem a little less psycho. I like her interactions with Cane, and NO I’m not a Cane fan.

I enjoyed today’s episode of Y&R…it entertained me, and i’m NOT easy to entertain. I’m just not a chronic complainer. Y&R to me isn’t as bad as everyone makes it, and I sit down for an hour and watch it and for the most part I’m entertained. I don’t watch the show and then goggle the storyline to see if something similar pops up from the same show or a movie. I take it for what it is, and I move on. And if for some reason I don’t like the show….I just turn the channel

@Stoney I admire your optimism and sorta agree with you. Y&R isn’t “So long, Sister Killer” bad anymore, but this storyline of Jack’s shooting is a bit recycled. Why did it have to be the same as the Ryan/Victoria/Tricia tragedy? What upsets us is that the current regime can’t seem to give us good stories of their own, they constantly have to rehash other regimes. In fact, that’s all MAB has done since she arrived on the scene!
