Back in the 90s, it was revealed that Stefano and Vivian had a fling years prior in Europe while he used the alias “Rudolpho”. It would make a lot of sense for Quinn to turn out to be the product of that liaison rather than Vivian’s unnamed, random ex-husband. Imagine the sibling rivalry between EJ and Quinn. Imagine Stefano pitting one brother against the other to see who’s most deserving of heading the DiMera empire. And imagine the fireworks if Quinn beds his wicked stepmother Kate! Days, please retcon Quinn’s paternity and make him Quinn DiMera!

Spacebook1 although I think it is a very good idea as a stand alone story, given that we have had more surprise who’s my daddy stories on Days in the last ten years than we have had any other type of story, I would be hardpressed to back it. I mean hell I still have trouble figuring out who Melanie is related to. Then there is DR Dan, there was every single child Stefano ever had except Tony, there was EJ hiding his parentage, there was Chloe, there was Chelsea, there was Frankie Brady, not to mention all the kiddies that were born to doubtful parentage….. Oh yeah and the ever revolving history of John Black. Then there were Kate’s adult children set no. 1 Billie and Austin, then we had the alien twins she had with Roman. I am sure I have forgoten some. Let’s leave that story to Y&R who simply insists on noone knowing where they came from. Even if they find out they could be wrong.

How would it be confusing? Stefano and Vivian already have a pre-established romantic history.

I didn’t say I was confused. I said I have had enough of those kinds of stories. The parentage issues have dominated Days for many years and I for one have had enough of it. Especially since Y&R has gotten into the same kind of story telling, where people’s parents aren’t their parents etc.
I am not saying that your idea is a bad one. Just done already. I would personally like for the show to branch out into other directions and not continue to tell the same stories over and over. Unfortunately this is the same story again…. Not confused. Just bored.

I’m a bit tired of Days’ dipping in the Stefano Dimera well. The show has a rich history from the seventies and early eighties with characters whose actions could be having repercussions in the present.

And with all due respect to you as a fellow fan, Spacebook1, but as much as I’m always willing and have always had to suspend my disbelief with Days, it’s just ridiculous how many times Stefano has turned out to be the father of every new character in Salem over the years.

I think Victor Kiriakis probably has a fascinating back story from the years between the time he fathered Bo with Caroline and before he came back to Salem. The show would do well to explore that some more.

Stefano turning out to be someone’s father is a Days staple and part of what makes the character so fun! I always loved when he would A) find out he had another child and B) kidnap Marlena. To make Stefano interesting again, they need to revisit those classic stories. The whole Chad-as-Stefano’s-son thing has been a bust, so I say try again with Quinn, but do it right. With Vivian gone, it makes sense to connect Quinn to a core family. So why not connect him to the one man on the canvas with whom Vivian had a romantic history? I hope Days does it. It will make Quinn a more viable character.

@everyone: I’m gonna have to pass on the idea too. It has just been overused. And one of the problems with daytime in general is using these same plot device over and over again. We’ve had enough stories about islanded characters learning that they are related to other characters from Brandon being Abe’s child, The Gemini Twins being Kate and Roman’s kid, Melanie being Daniel’s daughter and now Daniel being Maggie’s son. So the plot has been overused. And one way to drive down soap creativity and ratings is to overuse plot devices. And this plot device has been overused on Days.

Also you can’t very well have a good soap if everybody is always related to one another. Every soap needs a set of characters that have no familia relations to the rest of the cast.

And when it comes to the 90’s, the whole reason for the reboot was to move away from the far-out tales that dominated that era and the last decade. The plan was to provide more realism and thought provoking storylines that have fans talking intelligently about the soap. Stories ripped from the headlines. And I’ve seen far more intelligent discussions and debates about what’s happening on Days since the reboot.

So I like Days the way it is at this point. Quinn should just be Quinn and let the Dimera’s be. And so if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

I have no interest in the character of Quinn whatsoever. Afraid making him Stefano’s son won’t change that for me. He is the #1 character that I want to get rid of on the show. He doesn’t really serve much point on the show at all so far. Unless they are setting up a murder mystery with him as the victim. The 3 Dimera spawn on the show is sufficient for me.

Melanie, Daniel, Rafe and Gabi should all be fired before Quinn. So far, Days is doing a good job of recapturing its glory days of the 90s (92-98), and I hope they stick with it and keep retelling those kind of stories updated for the 2010s. Soaps shouldn’t move away from their classic paternity/who’s the daddy storylines—that’s what brought us into soaps in the first place! Thankfully, these writers are proteges of the late, great James E. Reilly, the last writer to make Days “must see TV”, and they are doing a good job of telling similar stories to his.

Instead of being Stefano’s son, why not pair him up with Stefano’s daughter? It has been a while since Lexie’s eye has wondered about. Maybe all this election stuff has made her tense and she needs a massage! I am sure Quinn would be the man with the plan! The torrid afair could only add to the tension of the election. If EJ were to find out about it, how would he use that info to his advantage? Would it affect Abe and Lexie’s marriage in a long term way? What would Celeste say? Would Lexie get free cosmetics? All this and more on the next SOAPY episode of Days of our Lives!

Amen to that Sparlingdiamond. In fact how about a moratorium on adult children finding out about their true parentage stories. It serves very little purpose and I find it to be tiresome after so many of them. I am trying to think back upon the last time I bought into this story. I guess the one that sticks out to me is in the 1980s, on Another World, when Marly and Victoria found out that Donna was not their sister but rather their mother. Atleast that kind of story makes sense. That actually happens in real life. What doesn’t happen is someone stole my egg and gave it to someone else and now this is my 45 year old son! Well if it happens it is rare. (by the way this is also impossible because they were not doing invtro ferilization 45 years ago when Daniel was born, and Maggies eggs were harvested in the 1980s not the 1960s.)

It’s a Days staple for someone to turn out to be Stefano’s son. Days would be wise to remember its past and its most popular stories and revisit them NOW in 2011/12. Vivian and Stefano have a sexual history, so it wouldn’t be an out-of-the-blue “twist” like Chad’s paternity shocker. Plus, with Stefano as Quinn’s son, it would explain why Quinn is a bad boy/villain: his DiMera blood!

marknsprmo, I sort of took what you said about adult children finding out they had an entirely different set of parents as a challenge, and doggone it you’re right. The last time it really had any significant impact on the direction of a show was indeed the revelation of the Love twins on Another World. It was believable for several reasons: Donna Love was not a significant part of the show before the early eighties. It mimicked real-life stories. Donna always acted extremely over-protective towards her “younger sister”.

All the soaps have told this kind of story about a million times in a way that’s far from as well done as AW did back then. It usually amounts to nothing more than a poor re-write of history.

I wish Days would just stay away from that and also from who’s the daddy stories.

So you actually prefer Quinn being the son of Vivian and some no-name even when Vivian’s romantic history points to Stefano, a character currently on the canvas, as the best possible choice for Quinn’s father? Wow. God, I can’t even believe we watch the same show. You people are just so damn contrary.

Spacebook1, it might actually work as a story, but they’d have to bring back Louise Sorel to tell it well; and I rather think she’s burned her bridges with Days.

The repetitiveness of the same story arcs and overused plotlines on Passions were part of the creative aspects that caused it go from a 2.2 at its height to a 1.5 in the ratings at its close from network television. What more fans want is refreshing and engaging storylines. Not “whose the daddy” for the millionth time. Not the same storyline slightingly changed for every acto r on the show year after year. That’s lazy writing, a lack of creativity. Bill Bell pushed his characters on Y&R into various situations due to how the character would respond to stimuli. It was called ‘character-driven storyline’ for a reason.

So this idea that Mr. Crane constantly tries to pass off as good writing where you just play a storyline “because they’ve always done it in the past” is not a recipe for soap success.

And what started out as a success by JER only due to the Salem Stalker storyline ended in a mess because characters ended up in having storylines that were the almost the same exact makeup as the ones on Passions (minus the supernatural). And then there is a point when absurdity goes from well received to repulsed and Days reflected that in the ratings during his last 6 months. The reason for the firing.

IMHO, Days needs to be a mixture of 70’s and 90’s era Days Of Our Lives. Be an epic again instead of a gimmick. Have strong, sexual undertones with just a tad of JER wackiness. They are doing great now, but the show still seems a little uneven and those are just kinks left over from the Higley regime. I’d start by making Melanie into less of a romantic heroine and make her this decade’s Amy Vining. Putting on the backburner for a year or so would be good for the character because the pairing with Chad is dull. I’m also not feeling Brady and Madison, but I’m giving them a chance. After all, I heard Ian Buchanan was coming on as a spoiler for that pairing….

Anyway, this soap needs a bit of a jolt and I’d start by making the show darker in tone. The EJ blackmails Will because he is gay hints to what kind of stories I want to see as a viewer, but I would love to see a tale reminiscent of “Vivian sabotages Kate’s plane” or “the Dimeras set Jack up for Peter’s fake murder” storyline going on as a side plot of soap deliciousness. Instead we have Jack’s PTSD, Will’s coming out of the closet, and John facing charges for stealing Salem pensions all at one time. I love socially consicous, but I like the drama.

I mean, why not make Quinn Ian Buchanan’s characters son? Then it’s not far fetched, but gives both actors a place on the canvas. Besides, Salem needs a new badass crime family. I can even see casting Fiona Hutchison as IB’s wife.

I think that Days has found its footing and established some stories now. I think that in 2012 we will see more action in these stories and a push to move them along. It must be hard to start up an hour show with all new stories and to balance all of them. However I do like the fact that the stories seem to be building up while one gets pushed forward in heat and intensity while the others are building and brewing. Sort of an ebb and flow. I actually like the Melanie/Chad pairing. I think they do have chemistry it is just that they need story too. Same with Madison and Brady. There is something there but they need something interesting to make the story take the next level. Hopefully that will be the Ian Buchanan story. I think Quinn is perfectly capable of producing his own story. He is one of those characters that couldn’t stay out of trouble so let him get into it.He doesn’t really need the aid of “story” to move his character along. He is gonna do the wrong thing and it will make its own story. He is kinda like Sami on that level.

Days isn’t very good. It’s boring! These writers wrote for Passions, one of the most exciting soaps of all time, yet they can’t write anything dramatic for Days. What gives? The stories are dull, dull, dull. The writers have no sense of drama. Where is the epic romance? Where is the mystery? Where is the action? I’m happy my favourite characters are back, but I won’t waste my time watching them in dull, boring stories.

@Spacebook1: So exciting that it stayed at the bottom of the ratings and even went down in the ratings. Yeah it was exciting alright. Excitingly bad. Wait. It was good if were 12-24 years old, eat a lot candy, drink a lot of soda and buy from the dollar menu at the golden arches.

Days has lost its identity. It feels less like Days and more like one of those horribly bland CBS shows like GL or ATWT. I could never stand those shows because they were never exciting or interesting. It’s like these current writers just don’t know how to bring the drama without the guidance of their mentor James E. Reilly. He is probably rolling in his grave, ashamed of Marlene and Darrell for turning Days into such a snoozefest.

I am enjoying Days so much more since the resetting back in November. The James Reilly era was entertaining to me, but it was not the Days I grew up on. I love the traditional soap opera. Reilly was more about gimmicks and sci fi. The drama, IMO, is some of the best in a long time. Will catching his mom having sex with EJ, John in jail because of EJ’s dirty work, Chad falling for his girlfriend’s best friend? Sure sounds like drama to me.

I can understand why if you became a Days fan during the original Reilly era, you might not like DOOL, but the show premiered in 1965 and the focus was family and relationships. I strongly believe the current writers and producers keep this the focus.

Crane, GL and ATWT were AWESOME in their heyday. You have a warped sense of soap opera saying they were bland.

As for DAYS losing its identity, that has happened across the board. Why do you think we keep losing so many soaps?!? Days Of Our Lives was the most realistic daytime dramas in the 60’s and 70’s. Another World was known for more melodrama than Days. The show had tragic Susan Martin who shot her first husband and battled Julie for years. That’s a character they should be bring back. Get back to the cornerstone of being a look into working class in fictional Salem amongst the backdrop of psychological and sexual character studies. No demons! No buried alive! No “Stefano is my daddy!”

Akbad, YOU have a warped sense of soap opera if you think that boring garbage was GOOD soap! I grew up on NBC and ABC soaps, not that East Coast CBS crap.

These new writers aren’t delivering at all. This is not the Days of Our Lives I grew up on, and it’s not the Days of Our Lives I’m interested in watching. I love Carrie and Austin and John and Marlena, but I will not stick around even for my most favourite characters if the show is a dull, uninspired, undramatic snoozefest.

As of Friday, I will have watched a quarter of a year’s worth of Days after quitting the show years ago. As we approach the New Year and make our resolutions, I will reconsider watching this show. It’s not worth my time.

Don’t worry, you won’t be hearing much from me anymore. I’ve decided, once the Christmas episodes are over, I’m taking a break. This show isn’t worth my time—I don’t care to spend 5 hours a week being bored by this soap. I’ll check in at the end of February for the return of Lucas—hopefully the show will have improved by then. And if not, oh well—it’s their loss, not mine.

I love that people on Days have jobs and talk to people outside their inner circle and have actual conversations. I love that every single second isn’t a set up for the story line or rehashing what has already happened. To say that Days is like the New York soaps is to say that Days is the diamond standard. Because that is what the New York soaps used to be. In their heyday the New York soaps were the bomb and the Hollywood soaps were the step sisters. They couldn’t even get emmys hardly. Another World will always be the soap that I hold closest to my heart (with a very close second to Santa Barbara). Back in the day, people would just sit and talk and have actual conversations about their work, and gossip and yell and scream at eachother. Every several days the two main bitter enemies of the moment would have a bitch session where they would lay it all out on the table with eachother. Some of my favorites were Liz Matthews fighting with Rachel over whatever they would be fighting over that day (Mac usually and pre Mac Alice and Steve) They would really get into it to the point of slapping eachother or grabbing eachothers arms. It was great. I can see this coming back with Sami and several people. Sami and Kate are always up for a good fight. Sami and her new nemesis her son Will make a great sparing couple. They are even trying out the Madison/Sami fights. All pretty good stuff. I also love the conversations between Bo and Hope talking about love and their families and the little boy they lost and Alice. These things fill the show with such depth that I couldn’t be bored. What is boring to me is someone getting put on death row, escaping to go on a new adventure and then never speaking of the death row ever again as if it never happened. What is boring to me is being possessed by the devil and after its over noone ever talks about it again as if it never happened. What is boring to me is being held hostage kidnapped, pretend murdered, buried alive, a child being born one year and two years later is a full grown adult and noone mentions how could that be? Noone ever even recalls that any of it ever happened. No better to give me stories that can build upon eachother. Stories that build upon the canon of a shows history. Characters that develop and are not stagnant. People with political points of view and people who are NOT stupid but still make errors in judgement. Show me the wounded person who has to find his way back emotionally after being held hostage. Let me see how even though a person might care for and be involved with someone, that someone can come in and attract them in a whole new way. Those are things I want to see. Not some drivel that will be erased in a few months time from the lexicon of the show.

Mark, you and Akbad are cruel, heartless people. You have NO IDEA what it’s like to love a show like Days, like honestly LOVE it as your favourite show, only to be forced to stop watching because the show has alienated you so badly. Days is basically cancelled as far as I’m concerned, and that’s sad. I wish I had kept my tapes from the 90s because I would gladly watch old episodes over and over again than this current junk. It’s so sad, and none of you have any compassion for me that I can’t watch my favourite soap anymore. To quote one of my favourite characters, that’s just mean, mean, mean.

well AllistairCrane you know how I felt during the James E Reilly days then. Because his “Days” was NOT what the show I grew up on. So I guess I know exactly what you are feeling. When he pulverized my show, I stopped watching at some point because I just couldn’t watch it any longer. The minute I heard that he was off the show, I came back. It wasn’t the same ever again.
It is not about being mean, it is about rectifying history. You might have fallen in love with the show during the time period but I had been in love with Days since 1972. So the fact of the matter is that I have loved this show way longer than you have been alive. I felt betrayed by a show that I had been watching for 20 plus years when all that stuff you loved about the show started.
You have a very narrow view of what a soap is or should be. I have spent decades watching soaps and have enjoyed different styles of shows. One of my very favorites was Santa Barbara. It was a soap totally unlike any show ever on daytime. I was glued to it. When the show fell apart and got canceled I was heartbroken. I do have some sympathy for your plight but it is diametrically opposed to my own feelings. Perhaps if you were older and had seen more of Days history, you might have a different oppinion.

Under JER in the 90s, Days was a Gothic romance. The show was on FIRE!!!! Days was never boring. Every story was interesting and exciting. The romantic stakes were high. There was mystery. There was drama. There were villains who did evil things. There were tortured heroes and heroines who struggled against all odds and found happiness. If you weren’t entertained by Kristen’s schemes to keep John and Marlena apart—and then the satisfying climax when Kristen was caught and John and Marlena reunited—you have no soul. Gina finally opening the puzzle box and proving she was Hope was amazing. That’s when Days was at its best. The show has been on a downward spiral ever since then. I wish my favourite show could be that good again. But under these hack writers, it won’t.

Spacebook, I won’t deny DAYS was doing the damn thing during that era, but I remember DAYS as a compelling drama. Do yourself a favor and check out some Doug and Julie highlights or Mickey shooting his brother, Bill. I believe the scenes are still on YouTube and they are incredible. Villains such as Lee Atwood, Kitty Horton, Larry Welch, Stuart Whyland, Lee Williams, and others kept up plenty shit in Salem without implanting brains chips or burying people alive. These shows have to evolve and I’m embracing it.

I’m stuck in a rock and a hard place because I’m an 80’s era fan. Back when Pat Falken Smith wrote the show and I was officially hooked! I loved stories like the Prisms and the Salem Slasher, but that regime was gone and I had to grow to like the gothic epic of JER in the 90’s and all the wackiness. I even stuck around for Princess Gina and Kristian Alfonso at her moustache twirling best! How do you project your hostilities at me? Why not stick around for the ride? DAYS has so much brewing right not, it’s incredible.

@Spacebook1: Mr. Crane, just end your contract. You are not David V. or Deacon Sharpe. We don’t need you popping up every 6 months to cause havoc. It does not spell good forum posting. Just stop.

And just so you know Bill Bell wrote the best era of Days and saved the show so that future writers good and bad could come and take a stab at it.

See, you wonder why I direct my “hostilities” at you. It’s smart aleck comments like THAT.

Why not stick around for the ride? Because there is nothing worth sticking around for! Sure, my favourite supercouples are back, but the show is incredibly dull. I don’t care about Will being gay. I don’t care about the teen characters. I’m not interested in Jack and Jenn being separated and Jack having to fight another man for Jennifer. I’m not interested in Carrie cheating on Austin with Rafe. I’m not interested in Jack having PTSD. I’m not interested in Daniel’s disease. I don’t care about the mayoral race. I don’t like EJ. Madison is a nauseating bitch. There’s just nothing for me to watch, let alone enjoy.

I want to see stories where Bo and Hope are working with the ISA to save the world from Stefano. I want to see stories where Stefano kidnaps Marlena and John’s the Pawn. I want to see Carrie and Austin together and happy and dealing with inner conflict rather than a third party interloper like Rafe or Abigail. I want to see Jack and Jennifer chasing stories together at the Salem Spectator. But most of all, I want drama. I want intrigue. I want Gothic romance. I want the trappings that made Days the most addictive and exciting soap of the 90s. So far, these writers are failing to deliver.

Marlene McPherson sent me a direct message through Twitter around the end of September saying that JER was her mentor and that I would like the show going forward. So far, she was wrong.
Do I need to get a restraining order? I can and will reply to anything I want to on this site. That is what it is for. However I do not think that Daytime Confidential is the appropriate place to personally threaten someone. You know I did sort of miss you AlistairCrane while you were away.
Apparently the paded room didn’t help your personality though….
LMAO about Mr. Spaceley aka AC and your comment!! :D Mr. Spaceley didn’t even know Mark that he was in a padded room after all the shock treatments needed practicing “JER rituals”…don’t you know ;) AlistairCrane is nothing but a big ass and shows it towards everyone. :O

So basically you people are allowed to bash the shit out of me, but if I dare say anything insulting about anyone, that’s not okay? Talk about a sickening double standard.

No shit-stirring here—my opinions are too much for you, and you refuse to see or respect my point of view so you label ME the bad guy. How insulting. The way you people gang up on me and bully me is truly sickening. That’s NOT okay. How do you feel good about yourself after what you guys do to me??

Enough already. I’m sick and tired of everyone turning out to be Stefano’s children. Give someone else a turn.
Amen Spacebook1.

No more giving characters adult children. It sucks as a storyline. Why do people always want to see the same things on soaps all the time? Why not have the writers come up with something new for a change?
