Expect Big Name Returns with AMC Move

Since word of All My Children moving to L.A. broke fans have been speculating about which L.A. based ex AMC stars might return. Soap Opera Digest is reporting All My Children fans can expect several big names to return.

A high-placed show source says to expect the returns of multiple L.A.-based AMC alums, "three-to-four big names, maybe more." Hints one high-profile alum, "I always said I would have stayed on the show forever if it was in L.A."

If they are L.A. based, who would you like to return to AMC?

Alexa Havins in Turbo Dates

Wondering what Alexa Havins has been up to since leaving All My Children? It turns out she is one of the leads of Turbo Dates, a hilarious web series at Babelgum.

Does All My Children's Babe Carey Have an Evil(Good) Twin?

Insiders are whispering that Pine Valley's most lamented antiheroine, Arabella "Babe" Carey Chandler, could soon have a twin pop up in town. Don't expect Alexa Havins to reprise the role, or Amanda Baker for that matter. According to our mole an entirely new actress will be playing the role of Babe's twin. Okay, soooo isn't the point of twin/look-a-like stories on soaps for the show to be able to bring back popular actors whose character were killed off? What's the point of a Babe twin without Havins? Reportedly the show wanted Guiding Light ingenue Marcy Rylan for the part, but the actress turned them down. Keep checking DC as the bizarre bit of casting news develops...

So Long Babe, Don't Let The Door Hit You On the Way Out

There comes a time in every soap viewer's life when, if they've just hung in there long enough, they have outlasted a character they find absolutely loathsome. Well get out the Chandler crystal, raid the Cortlandt's wine cellar and pop open Erica's best bottle of champagne because the day many fans have dreamed of is almost upon us. The demise of Babe Carey Chandler.

I want to make clear that this has nothing to do with Alexa Havins or Amanda Baker but everything to do with the character of Babe. Even though Babe was reviled by many, it was Havins who made the character watchable and while I maintain that Babe should have been written off after Havins' departure, this tornado has given Baker the opportunity to do her best work to date. Daytime Confidential #222: CBS & DAYS Heap of Trouble

On today's show Mike, Jay and Luke discuss Days of Our Lives rumors including the possible arrivals of Alexa Havins and Roscoe Born. Jay's thoughts on Tamara Braun's Ava and what is going on between Max and Nick?

As always, the topic of Gloria vs. Genoa City is a hot topic and we're wondering who TPTB might pair Felicia up with. Could it be Brad or Nick or do Jamey and Mike have other possibilities in mind?

As the World Turns' is selling off the Snyder farm but we're more worried about where the Walsh mansion and Lily's mansion are. Could this be a blatant plot point to bring Mike back into the picture? Julie Pinson joins As the World Turns but it doesn't look like it will be as Molly and we're a bit bummed.

The Bold and Beautiful's Susan Flannery finds herself smack dab in the middle of an AFTRA/SAG battle over the potential Actors Strike and our predictions of what is going to happen in the fast developing Pheobe/Rick/Taylor triangle. Also, why is it that almost every character on the show is acting as if they are in heat?

It's been a few weeks and Guiding Light's new filming format is beginning to reveal the flaws in the system. We love the out door scenes but the indoor scenes need some improvement. Gus bit the dust in a motorcycle accident and we discuss Olivia receiving his heart and much, much more.

Casting Rumor: Alexa Havins Coming To Days?

Rumors are now swirling that former All My Children star, Alexa Havins (ex-Babe Chandler), is in talks with Days Of Our Lives for a new role with the soap. If rumors are true, Alexa would be playing the role of Jessica Davis, a trashy NASCAR groupie who had a previous relationship with hunky Max Brady. Supposedly they had a one-night stand 5 years ago at Daytona and as a result she comes to Salem with a young child (Max's?!).

Now I personally was NOT a fan of Alexa's Babe Carey Chandler on All My Children, however I do see some potential casting for Days. I'm not at all interested in this latest gossip about bringing another trashy character to town (isn't that the same sort of role she played on All My Children anyways?) however I think she might be more suited to play a more grown up version of Abby Deveraux!

What do you think of the rumors of Alexa Havins being cast on Days Of Our Lives?

All My Children: Watching Through the Medicated Eyes of an AMC Girl

Usually, when I sit down to write my blog, I have a hard time figuring out where to begin, and what the tone is going to be. Sure, while I am sitting in front of the boob tube, watching All My Children, the ideas come to me fast and furiously. But sit down with the laptop? And my overly medicated mind draws a complete blank. I am warning you all, due to severe muscle spasms, I am medicated. But, I ask you, is there any other way to watch All My Children without slamming your head into the television?

So, that being said, I will start at the beginning. No, not the historical beginning of All My Children, but the beginning of the show itself. Have you seen the opening lately? Did you notice that on Rebecca Budig’s first day back as Greenlee, Sabine Singh’s character portrayal shot was replaced with hers? It was immediate. So, I put this question out to you - How long are we all supposed to wait before we see the other new or returning characters added to the opening? Where are the opening shots of Debi Morgan or Darnell Williams? Angie and Jesse were far bigger than Greenlee ever was, or will be. So, why weren’t their shots added on Day 1?? If I were those actors, I would be adamant to get the same treatment as Rebecca did. Because to be quite honest here, All My Children will get far more long time viewers back showcasing Angie and Jesse, then parading Greenlee around. Also, are we going to see more of Frankie Hubbard now that his parents are in town? Or will he be faded into the background with the likes of Jonathan or Sean Montgomery? Both of whom have been ousted by the show.

While I think it is great that they are bringing back a popular veteran couple, I do not see success in their return. I can only hope and pray that All My Children can learn from past mistakes, and actually write a decent story for a veteran character. The reason I hold no hope is simple. Look at Adam Chandler, for example. What does he currently have as a storyline? Not much from where I stand. We have a powerful business tycoon, who upon getting his company back, does nothing to stomp on the person who put him in the predicament in the first place. Instead, we have Adam hiding bugs in rings to spy on JR. Please somebody over there at ABC, take Adam Chandler off the sedatives, and unleash his all to well known fury on Pine Valley. It is overdue, and very needed to help pick this soap up.

Another thing I do not understand is why they brought in the character of Samuel Woods as a love interest for Erica? Sorry here folks, but I do not see anyone as an adequate partner for Erica other than Jackson. Why make a big deal about Erica’s 10th marriage if they were not going to make it last? So, I suppose now they are going to make Erica into a Martha Stewart type, selling off tons of stocks. Is this why her accounts are frozen? Also, WHY are they bringing this character in when there is still a spark between Erica and Jack, and there is so much story there to be told. I am warning you now, if and when they pair up Samuel and Erica, I promise you I am NOT going to have anything nice to say about it. Please feel free to call me on that, should I go back on my promise, which I won’t.

There are so many veteran actors on this show, and no matter the writing team they have over there writing, nobody seems to do them justice. Gone are the catfights, jabs and one-liners of Erica & Brooke. The witty reparte of Palmer and Adam. Tad and anyone, for that matter. I did see some of the old chemistry sparks between Tad and Jesse, and alas that gave me hope. Hope that maybe for once the idiots at ABC are listening to us the viewers and maybe are bringing us back to family-centric stories.

While that sounds like a great idea, I somehow doubt this will ever come to fruition. Why should it? They have a bad habit over at All My Children of showcasing stories they THINK we want to see. Here are a few examples -

THEY THINK: we want to see Kendall’s infidelity over and over.

WE WANT: to see Kendall and Zach with their children as a family unit. Happy. Draw your stories from that.

THEY THINK: We want to see Ryan and his bulging eyes every day on our screen, being the saviour of women and all in Pine Valley.

WE WANT: To see Ryan bedstruck with a blinding debilitating disease, with his eyes bandaged. Unable to save anyone, except us the viewers from having to look at him EVERY DAY.

THEY THINK: we want new characters brought in, and shoved in our faces.

WE WANT: Old favorites brought back, and actually written for in entertaining and challenging, and keeping us on the edge of our seats.

THEY THINK: we want to see the Kendall and Greenlee Show

WE WANT: to actually see other characters on the show too.

And lastly, before I re-medicate so I can sit through yet another disappointing hour of All My Children -

THEY THINK: We are loyal to watching.

I’M THINKING - Is there anything good on another channel?

So smarten up AMC Executives, remotes are very easy to use these days, and does not take any effort to change the channel. I wonder what is on NBC at 1 pm eastern time???

"The Real" Controversy: What Is The Impact?

For those of you who have been living under a rock, new to the online soap experience or haven't visited Daytime Confidential.com before you may have not noticed it but All My Children is in the midst of a big controversy over the use of the term "The Real" when referring to the return of Rebecca Budig as Greenlee Smythe instead of using "The Original". Now there are rumors that All My Children is considering using the same type of campaign if they can get Alexa Havins back as Babe Carey Chandler.

This whole thing got me to thinking about where we as fans draw the line and what we would or would not accept from our favorite soaps or networks.

However, before I continue I just want to say this is all hypothetically speaking and I am a big fan of all three of the actresses being used in my example. I could have just as easily used the four actresses who have portrayed Carly on General Hospital, the two actresses who portrayed Jessica on One Life to Live, or one of the actresses who portrayed Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light. If you aren't a Days of Our Lives fan then insert the name of a character who has been portrayed by more than one actor or actress on your favorite soap. I'm using Days of Our Lives' character Billie Reed portrayed by three actresses; Lisa Rinna, Krista Allen, and Julie Pinson.

Lisa Rinna is the original and arguably the most popular portrayer of the character. However, she hasn't actually been on the show in years and could be considered today more of a fond memory than an actual possibility to return.

Krista Allen
was the second actress to portray Billie Reed but is considered by many to have portrayed the worst version of Billie Reed. As one person I was discussing this topic with pointed out. Krista Allen is the Austin Peck of the Billies. She's really improved as an actress after leaving Days of Our Lives.

Julie Pinson
is the latest actress to portray Billie Reed and if I might add a bit of personal bias to this discussion I think she's done a bang up job in the role. However, her Billie has been saddled with two major problems. 1) She hasn't gotten any real good storylines to showcase her talents. 2) She went through a major rewrite in order for Chelsea to exist. (Billie lost a baby in the swamp that was a stillborn and was buried. How, the baby survived to become Chelsea is a bit dubious). Unfortunately, Julie Pinson was recently let go from Days of Our Lives.

Hypothetically Speaking:

Hypothetically speaking, how would Days of Our Lives fans feel if somehow Days of Our Lives pulled of the virtually impossible (you can thank DWTS for this) and somehow brought back Lisa Rinna as Billie Reed and then in all the promo for her return used "The REAL Billie Reed Returns to Days of Our Lives"?

How does this trend impact daytime and its fans?

1. Is it ok for fans to use "the real" but not a network or show? If so is there a double standard?
2. Is it ok for networks or shows to use "the real" but in moderation?
3. If no actor(ess) is currently portraying the character is it ok for "the real" to be used?
4. If it is an original actress, is it better to use "original" instead of "the real"?
5. Is this a trend that we'll see more of future?
6. If so do you think that we as fans will become jaded to it and after a while won't care or pay attention?
7. Do stunts like this hurt the show that uses it or is "bad press" from those of us online still good press?
8. Will there be a ratings payoff? (we're about to find out about All My Children)
9. Is it easier for us to accept this type of thing for an extremely popular actor(ess) who has been gone for a long time like a Lisa Rinna vs. a popular actress like Budig who has been gone a shorter amount of time?
10. Is it right to use such a campaign when another actor(ess) is still in the role?

Online vs. "Regular" Viewers

My last question is this. Is "The Real" campaign being used by All My Children or that could hypothetically be used by any soap such as Days of Our Lives something that outrages us in the online chattering community but that has little or no impact on those who are just reading the magazine's off the stands or seeing the promos on their TV's? Does this issue even register on their radar and is it possible that we're taking this to seriously?

I'm not sure where we'll be as an industry or how much this campaign by All My Childen wil affect the promotional strategies of other soaps but one thing is forsure, it's highly unlikely this is the last time we'll face this issue.

What are your thoughts on this type of campaign?

27 Dresses and 4 Soap Stars

I just got out of Katherine Heigl's new movie 27 Dresses and though it is probably one of the best romantic comedies of 2007 I couldn't help but be happy for Brian Kerwin (Charlie, One Life to Live), Ronald Guttman (Alexander Cambias, All My Children), Jennifery Bassey (Marion Colby Chandler, All My Children) and Alexa Havins (f. Babe Chandler, All My Children) who all had roles in the movie. Kerwin was Heigl's on screen father, Guttman was a wedding cake baker, Havins was a bride and Bassey plays the mother of the groom. If you are in the mood for a great romantic comedy be sure to check it out.
