Can You Find Dinah's Hat?

On Monday's Guiding Light, Dinah (Gina Tognoni) married Shayne (Jeff Branson) in a lovely — if terribly brief and shamefully cheap — ceremony by Doris (Orlagh Cassidy), Springfield's closeted lesbian mayor who has joined more people in matrimony over the last two months than the number of Republicans who have been caught having extramarital affairs. Unfortunately, I was distracted by Dinah's hat.  READ MORE

Otalia: The Art of the Matter

She'd been teased and mocked for years, no more so than in her competition with other, younger and, some would say, prettier hopefuls. Her appearance had been derided as "downmarket." She obviously couldn't afford fancy stylists and didn't have the finesse of her peers, but when she revealed the depths of her talents she left viewers and critics quaking in their boots.

I'm not talking about Susan Boyle, the YouTube and Britain's Got Talent overnight sensation. I'm talking about the magnificent week of high octane, balls to the wall drama that has been Guiding Light.

I'm glad I waited before posting anything about the extraordinary week that has transpired on GL as the Olivia/Natalia love story played out before my astonished eyes. Temptation tested me in the aftermath of Olivia's shattering graveyard soliloqy to her heart donor Gus and, later, her heartstopping confession of love to Natalia, in what is quite possibly destined to become remembered as one of the greatest performances in daytime of the last decade. My fingers fidgeted over my keyboard during one of the most gloriously tortured daytime weddings in recent memory. My mind raced with superlatives about Natalia's struggle at the altar and her tearful confession of love for Olivia mixed with guilt about Frank. While the week belonged to Otalia (which I will get to in a moment), the entire show was, to borrow a phrase, a towering inferno of greatness. Let us count the ways: READ MORE

Random Thoughts on Five Soaps

I'm back, gentle readers, and not a moment too soon. Since we were last together, real life has provided more plot twists than an episode of Lost, but I've still managed to faithfully watch the stories day in and day out. While there are a few larger topics that I'll be addressing in the next few days and weeks, it turns out a little time and distance provides the opportunity for a bit of clarity and perspective on issues that one might have been previously too close to appreciate. In that spirit, here are a few completely random observations about the five soaps I normally watch that I've noticed in the little over a month since I last posted. These observations generally are not a part of the usual list of talking points, but just a number of things that have popped in my head. Without further ado... READ MORE

Guiding Light: "Wolfing" Down On The Island Of Lesbos

Phillip's return isn't the only thing hot on Guiding Light these days. So are Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia as Otalia. Otalia is everywhere. Entertainment Weekly has them on "The Must List." They did an interview with After Ellen. Lynn Liccardo over at the Red Room wrote a column about fan's reaction to Otalia. Now Michael Fairman has an interview with Chappell and Leccia at the Advocate.com, in which they talk about Olivia discovering that Doris Wolfe (Orlagh Cassidy) is a lesbian and how Otalia get some payback for the very public attack on Emma by Doris.

It's a good thing Otalia is getting so much press these days. Combined with Phillip's return, better writing, the slow but steady improvement of production values and a Bizzie reunion, there is a lot about Guiding Light to enjoy.

Now that we know that Doris is a lesbian would you like to see an Olivia/Doris/Natalia triangle?
