Was Deception’s Premiere Delicious or Did it Fail to Deliver?

NBC premiered it’s new primetime soap Deception last night. The series centers around Detective Joanna Locasto (Meagan Good), who returns to her childhood home to investigate the murder of her best friend Vivian Bowers (Bree Williamson).

While not as strong out of the box as say Revenge or Scandal, Deception had several things working for it. The Julian (Wes Brown), Joanna and Will (Laz Alonso) triangle has potential. I kept wavering between which love interest I’d rather see Joanna with.

After not being particularly enchanted with Ella Rae Peck on Gossip Girl as Lola Rhodes, I found myself really enjoying Mia’s teen angst. Deception did have some weaknesses; I thought it was a bit slow and several actors did their share of scenery-chewing, but I’ll be giving the new soap a chance.

What did you think of Deception’s premiere?

Loved it! It was delicious.

It was solid. I’ll give it some more time.

Hated it! It needs to die faster than Vivian Bowers.

I kinda liked it. I am gonna have to rewatch it again. I will say that Meagan Good is a very good, not to mention underrated actress, and it's good to see her and Kerry Washington, two capable AA actresses, playing leads on television. With that being said, I doubt that "Deception" will ever reach the same level of popularity as "Scandal."

Bree Williamson is looking GOOD!! Congrats, Bree!! Always delivered on OLTL even with some questionable writing choices!

I also kinda enjoyed it. I've never watched full episodes of either "Scandal" or "Revenge," so I can't make a comparison, but this show was able to hook me for an entire episode when similar shows have not. However, I think being on NBC is almost an automatic strike against it's chances of survival.

I enjoyed it but the pilot had some problems. Thankfully, SourceRyan said eps 2 & 3 are a lot stronger than the pilot. I'm looking forward to see how things unfold.

I started to watch and stopped about 15-20 minutes into it. One thing that I got confused on is where the heck they were supposed to be. NYC? San Francisco? I saved it on the DVR, so I may give it another go this weekend.

Pilots can be hit or miss just because they're laying the groundwork for the main stories. Considering that was in fact the pilot, I look forward to this show getting better. Overall, I enjoyed it.

The pilot was like off brand Kool Aid: no matter how much sugar you put in it, it still tastes like someone was too cheap to spend the extra 3 cents a package for real Kool Aid.

LOL...Flavor Aid! I enjoyed the show, and it was obvious that NBC wants to pull in some of the Revenge-Scandal crowd by combining ABC's two characters. Meagan Good is a decent actor, and not bad looking either.

I also hope that perhaps Bree's character isn't really dead, but the one who orchestrated the whole thing.

JTHawk, it takes place in New York, at least the family scenes, though it starts off with Joanna being a cop in San Francisco. I believe the show actually films in New York.

@J Bernard - Great zinger! It totally sums up my feelings about Deception.

I thought it was odd the way the show would transition to a commercial break. It feel like the scene came to an abrupt stop, like a car on the highway. Maybe it was just weird editing.

I hope Bree Williamson will continue to make frequent or infrequent appearances through flashbacks, etc. I will watch a few more episodes before passing a final judgement.

Clearly someone at NBC said they wanted their own version of Revenge and out popped Deception. There is nothing wrong with Networks copying another's hit show, its been done for years. However Deception pales in comparison to Revenge. Its not as well written and the characters are way underdeveloped compared to Revenge. They spent too much time in the pilot trying to set up story when the should have been developing the characters. Its great to see a black actress as the lead for a show but that is not enough to get me watch.

I caught the first half, but lost interest. It's not Revenge's pilot that's for sure.

i watched the first episode of this OnDemand over the holiday break and as much as I wanted to like it the show just felt very flat to me.
A couple issues I had with it were:
It needs to up it's soapiness quotient, this aint high drama like the West Wing...its a soap so act like it!
The casting for every part on this show is just wrong. I will believe a man can fly before I buy Meagan Good as a hard nosed detective; the entire Bowers clan is just blah except for Tate Donovan who brings some serious manly bitchiness to his role: and Laz Alonzo is as dynamic as bowl of fruit...he and Good have zero chemistry.

Its going to need some serious retooling or it will be canceled with the quickness.

No to deception.

meagan goode should be annoyed having to act alongside horrid victor garber.

no way am i going to be open to the idea of even supporting deception bec of victor garber and anything vgbb is a part of bec they are both untalented and annoying. vgbb is part of one of the most racist "comedy" franchises the hangover. victor garber is a bad actor but of course hollywood will keep giving him roles.

laz alonso is handsome but it wouldn't surprise me if meagan is paired w/ a white guy bec the main romance has to have a white char for these soaps.

i read the premise and goode's char is the daughter of the maid! the lead char is a racial minority but of course she has to have a poor background while the white chars are rich.

typical pathetic racism from hollywood. they'd have meltdowns if the white chars were poor and the black chars were rich.

I'll give it a couple more episodes before I decide.
I think they are modeling this show after "Scandal," not "Revenge," and so far "Deception" a poor relation. Scandal is much better written and acted and will be hard to beat.

bottomchef...what did Victor Garber ever do to you? I've always liked him as an actor. To each his own...Wink

I liked it a lot. Pilots rarely hook me, but this one did. It wasn't high drama or anything, but I thought it did its job of making me interested in seeing where it goes. I also heard that episodes 2 & 3 will step things up even further, so that's good.
