The Innocence of Youth, Lost

The other day I was thinking, quite a shock I know, about the fact that very few of today's soaps have true "teen" (pre college) storylines anymore.

Gone are the days of teen storylines such as General Hospital's Lucky, Elizabeth, Nikolas and Emily, Days of Our Lives' Belle, Shawn, Chloe and Brady and The Young and the Restless' Glo by Jabot Kids. The classic "four teen" formula that dominated much of soaps through the late 90's, and made stars out of Jonathan Jackson, Rebecca Herbst, Tyler Christopher, Kirsten Storms, Jason Cook, Nadia Bjorlin, Kyle Lowder, Farah Fath and countless others before them, seems to have been replaced by the "duo."

As the World Turns has Parker and Liberty. General Hospital doesn't have any true teens. The Young and the Restless has Noah and Eden. The Bold and the Beautiful has Stephanie and Marcus (not true teens).  All My Children's last attempt at recreating the forumla bombed and the show is now rebuilding with Colby and Petey. Guiding Light has Daisy and Rafe. Days of Our Lives,  which practically defined the formula with Sami, Austin, Carrie and Lucas, has no true teen characters except maybe Melanie. A character not even Blake Berris' Nick Fallon (a post college character) can save.

At the moment only One Life to Live seems to be following the "four teen" formula with Starr (Kristen Alderson), Cole (Brandon Buddy), Langston (Brittany Underwood) and Markko Rivera (Jason Tam). Now granted, at least one of these four actors isn't actually a teen, but the characters are all still in highschool. In honor of these four characters I thought I'd see which couple fans enjoy most.

Which couple is your favorite?

I voted Starr and Cole. I actually like the couple of Marrko and Langston together more but I watch Kristen Alderson in all her scenes. I especially like when all 4 of the characters are together in a scene.

Sorry, can't stand Cole. He's boring as hell and sucked the fun out of Starr - she lost her edge the minute they tried to pair them together! I really enjoy Langston and Markko though. They know how to have fun and work well together in times of trouble an angst.

And now that I'm feeling all nostalgic, I'm off to watch youtube clips of GH's 4 Musketeers - they were the best!

Langston and Cole both get on my nerves. They could fall into a hole into Eterna for all I care and let Markko and Starr console each other.

See I like Starr and Cole but when I look at them I think, wet noodle sandwich. Starr's parents are schemers from way back, where's the lizard loving girl? Cole's father is Patrick Thornhart for crying out loud! Where's the passion and intelligence in Cole? This should be a supercouple in the making. Marty and Todd's children falling in love should be the hottest thing on daytime. So why am I bored?

Luke,

Actually the four teen formula first was implemented, refined and prefected with Guiding Light's "Four Musketeers" teen storylines of the 80's featuring Phillip Spaulding, Beth Raines, Mindy Lewis and Rick Bauer.

Not only did the "Four Musketeers" have one of the most memorable location shoots in the medium (when the gang ran away as a group to New York), but in one way or the other encompassed several different stories including Mindy's affair with Roger Thorpe, Phillip's struggle between his MArler & Spaulding sides, and Beth's abuse at the hands of stepfather Bradley Raines.

GL's "Four Musketters" was the model that every soap has tried to follow ever since.

We've told him that Bernard. The Four Musketeers helped Guiding Light steal the Number One slot from GH in '84. Luke, bless his heart, truly believes daytime television didn't start until Jan. 1, 1990.

I didn't say it started in the 90's, merely provided recent examples of it from the 90's.

I think these four have truly captured the teen spirit no pun intended there! The subjects written for these characters have been awesome regardless of whether you like one or the other.  I have not seen a good bunch of teens on daytime TV for sometime.  The last teen group per se that I actually liked was Georgie and Dillon on GH.

Uh, you called the 90's examples "classic". Classic for daytime soap operas predates the grunge movement, the Batman movies and Tupac Shakur.

I also used the word "through" which indicates prior to the 90's up until the end of the 90's.

Yes and then proceeded to name all actors from the 90s as the people who were made "stars" by the format Guiding Light begat years earlier! LOL The "classic" four teen format made stars of Grant Aleksander and Judi Evans long before these lesser 90's examples. I will be buying you a Soap Opera History book for Christmas.

If I named every actor made famous by the four teen format it would have been huge. I went with the ones that first came to mind.

How about Phil, Tara, Chuck and Erica? Weren't they the first ones to start this trend? I always believed that the GL kids (Philip, Beth, Rick and Mindy) were modeled after them.

As a 27yr old female who grew up watching Days, I am saddened to see the lack of quality teen couples on daytime right now. My older sister got to see the whole Carrie/Austin Sami/Lucas storyline unfold, while I had the pleasure of getting addicted to Shawn/Belle Chloe/Phillip and Mimi/Rex situation. The teen storylines are what draw younger viewers in. To this day I still believe that Days got the majority of their young viewers from those couples. Now that Days has ruined basically all of those couples, so many of their viewers have gone elsewhere looking for that same spark.
DOOL is falling flat on it's face with Morgan, Stephanie, Max, Chelsea, and Nick. They're trying to recreate what they had with Shelle and Phloe - and it's not working. Maybe if they weren't in such a rush to age everyone (i.e. Abby), then they'd have better material, and actors, to work with.
