15 Soap Opera Moms Who Didn’t Deserve Anything For Mother’s Day

No. 15: Dr. Liesl Obrecht, General Hospital

With a mother like Dr. Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati) on General Hospital, can Dr. Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud) really be blamed for turning out so screwed up? Dr. Obrecht loves only one person more than herself — Faison (Anders Hove), whom she frets over not providing with a son.

The nutty, international criminal-turned-hospital chief of staff did manage to give someone a male heir. We wonder if Detective Nathan West (Ryan Paevey) knows what he's in for, having a mutter like Obrecht?

EXCLUSIVE: Ron Carlivati Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Details on Michelle Stafford Joining General Hospital!

General Hospital just pulled off the casting coup of the decade. Ex-The Young and the Restless leading lady Michelle Stafford has joined the ABC sudser as Nina, presumed dead wife of Dr. Silas Clay (Michael Easton), daughter of Madeline Reeves (Donna Mills), niece of Dr. Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati), sister/cousin of Detective Nathan West (Ryan Paevey) and sworn enemy of Ava Jerome (Maura West).

We caught up with head writer Ron Carlivati to find out how he and showrunner Frank Valentini managed to pull this off. The scribe reveals how it was Valentini's idea to sneak the soap superstar in to tape the top secret scene that aired today.

Just how much of a game-changer is The Staff's arrival for the 51-year-old daytime drama? A cryptic Carlivati spills the tea in this Daytime Confidential exclusive.

Daytime Confidential: The moment pictures of Michelle Stafford partying it up with executive producer Frank Valentini at last year's General Hospital Daytime Emmy party hit the web, people began buzzing about her possibly joining GH. Did you guys know you wanted her way back then?

Ron Carlivati:  No. I mean, when you hear that an actress of Michelle's caliber and popularity might potentially be available, of course you can't help but think, "What if?"  But I was there when those pictures were taken, and all you're seeing is a bunch of people having fun at an industry party. Although I must admit that my memory of that evening is a little fuzzy. I vaguely remember a tequila shot or two...

20 Soap Opera Characters Who Would Feel Right at Home on Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is one of the most buzzed about series on television. Filled with barbaric battles, epic betrayals, palace intrigue and romance it has all the drama a soap fan could ask for. Here's a crash course comparison of our favorite daytime soap characters and their Westeros equivalents.

Love to Hate: King Joffrey Baratheon, Game of Thrones / Nick Fallon, Days of Our Lives

Game of Thrones fans cheered Joffrey Baratheon's death, because of his countless evil deeds, and in no small part, Jack Gleeson's fantastic portrayal of the sadistic character. Though he isn't dead—not for a lack of trying on the parts of some Salem residents—the same can be said for Days of Our Lives' Nick Fallon.

Blake Berris has masterfully developed the Horton legacy character into a multifaceted villain. While I sincerely hope Nick isn't poisoned, like Joffrey, I emphatically want him to pay, and pay dearly.
