The Have and Have Nots Helps Boost OWN to Profitability

Tyler Perry’s brand of TV magic helped his pal Oprah earn a bit of good news. According to Deadline, Discovery CEO David Zaslav revealed OWN is now cash flow positive. Reportedly, cable networks are paying more for the channel, while The Haves and Have Nots and Love They Neighbor are drawing in viewers.

He singled out Tyler Perry’s Have And Have Nots and Love Thy Neighbor as “bona fide hits” that contributed to 39% ratings growth among women 25-to-54 in Q2. That was “the highest growth of any cable network” in the quarter and made OWN a top 20 network for women in June — and made it a top-3 network for African American women over the last eight weeks.

Tika Sumpter Fires Back at Criticism Over The Haves and The Have Nots

Don’t dare call Tika Sumpter’s red-hot role in Tyler Perry'sThe Haves and the Have Nots a bad depiction of black women! Sumpter chatted with TV Guide Magazine’s Michael Logan about criticism of her role as femme fatale Candace Young in OWN's breakout hit.

TV Guide Magazine: There's been criticism that your character presents a negative image of African-American women. Is that fair? Or is this a breakthrough of sorts? It seems African-American actresses rarely get to play the badass.

Sumpter: It's true! I think most people write from what they see in their own world, which is maybe why we so often see an African-American woman as the best friend, or the one you bring in when you need some sass. It's like we're put in a box. When I was on One Life to Live I always wanted to delve into my character, Layla, to find out why she was the black sheep of the family. I so wanted to have some edge. I have no idea why there was a reluctance to do that or why we so rarely see it. I guess you'd have to ask the writers.

OWN Doubles Episode Order For The Haves and The Have Nots

Get ready for more blackmail, sex and scheming, Savannah-style. OWN has doubled its episode order for Tyler Perry's soap opera, The Haves and The Have Nots. The vehicle, which stars One Life to Live's Tika Sumpter as a call girl who targets a wealthy, Southern family, has been picked up for a total of 32 installments.

"Naturally, it is wonderful to have the network's first scripted series score so resoundingly," said OWN  President Sheri Salata. "Tyler's fans and OWN viewers have responded to this guilty pleasure in record numbers, and we are happy to give them more of a good thing."

Haves and Have Nots’ John Schneider: “This is a Show About People Who Think They Have Life by The Balls”

Bo Duke has left the building! Dukes of Hazzard alum John Schneider’s latest role, in Tyler Perry’s highly-anticipated soap opera, The Haves and the Have Nots, will definitely make viewers of the 80’s series do a double take.

Schneider gave TV Guide Magazine’s  Michael Logan a little taste of what fans can expect from the sudser. Schneider stated:

I'm usually cast as the guy who lives on a dirt road — the one who'll be there to sandbag your house when you need help. That ain't Cryer.
