While seven women earned a spot in the Emmy race for Outstanding Actress in a Drama, only six men landed Emmy nominations for lead actor when they were announced on July 18. Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville, Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston, The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels, Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, Homeland’s Damien Lewis and House of Cards’ Kevin Spacey are this year’s nominees.

House of Cards Snags Historic Emmy Nominations

If you haven’t watched Netflix’s political drama, House of Cards, now is probably a good time for a marathon. The Kevin Spacey-starrer earned an Outstanding Drama Series nomination, joining Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Homeland and Mad Men in the category.

House of Cards is the first online exclusive series to be nominated for one of the two major show categories. Netflix’s continuation of Arrested Development earned acting nominations this year, but the series won Outstanding Comedy in 2004 while still airing on Fox. 

Broadcast comedies The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family and 30 Rock will go up against cable darlings Girls, Louie and VEEP in the Outstanding Comedy Series category

Of the shows nominated in the Drama and Comedy categories, Game of Thrones led with 16 nominations. However, it is FX’s American Horror Story: Asylum—nominated for Outstanding TV Miniseries or Movie—that earned the most nominations with 17.

Carrie Fisher to Present at 40th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards

The Force will be strong at the 40th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) announced Star Wars icon Carrie Fisher will present the award for Outstanding Special Class-Animation when the telecast airs on June 16.

Executive Producer Gabriel Gornell announced this will be the first ever telecast of the Outstanding Special Class-Animation Award to be presented by Carrie Fisher. This is the category that recognizes excellence in the art of Animation, not usually intended for younger children. Gornell stated “This category often celebrates sci-fi, action, and adventure genres with strong nominees this year including Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Legend of Korra, and Dan Vs.” Gornell continued “And for a category that celebrates Sci-Fi that happens to have a Star Wars nominee-there is nobody better to present the award than the one and only Carrie Fisher.” READ MORE
