Okay, it pangs me to have to do this, but the soap must go on! If The Young and the Restless can't come to some sort of meeting with the minds and/or checkbooks with Melody Thomas Scott, I think I have the perfect person to play Nikki Newman (No, I'm not talking about Deidre Hall)—Knots Landing grad-turned-country music royalty Lisa Hartman Black!
Long before she married Nashville God Clint Black, the former Lisa Hartman shot onto the pop culture landscape as tragic songbird Ciji on CBS's long-running primetime hit Knots Landing. Ciji's romance with Gary Ewing (Ted Shackelford) for a time even had fans of the mega popular Gary and Val pairing asking "Joan Van Ark who?". The character proved such a hit with viewers after the Knots brass killed Ciji off, they were forced to bring Hartman-Black back as Ciji's lookalike Cathy to appease disgruntled Sea View Circlers!
Like many of you, ousted DAYS leading lady Deidre Hall was the first person who came to mind to replace Scott as Nikki, however it appears Auntie Ri Ri likes to look outside of daytime when recasting signature roles (Clementine Ford, Michael Muhney), so what's the point of wasting a Wishful Casting on Hall as Nikki, when I know Drake Hogestyn would stand about an equal chance of replacing Eric Braeden as The Mustache?
Like Scott, Hartman Black is an alum of the decadent, 80's era of sunkissed blonde bombshells who have held up well. She's also a proven actress, not just in Knots, but in 376,822—count 'em— Lifetime TV movies, and would bring in those diehard fans with her. If you think soap fans are scary, try changing the channel when one of your relatives is watching a Lifetime movie marathon!
I think if Y&R decides to eventually recast , Hartman Black would be a sure bet. Think of it this way, we'd have someone else to sing at weddings and funerals besides little Ana—bless her heart.
