Ratings, Rants and Raves: What The Frack is Up With ABC Daytime's Ratings?!

Santa Claus came early, but he left big old lumps of coal in the stockings of the three ABC daytime soaps the week of December 6-10, 2010. (Source: Soap Opera NetworkGeneral Hospital lost 129,000 total viewers over the previous week. While GH managed to hold steady in households, tied with sister soaps All My Children and One Life to Live at a 1.8, the sudser dropped two-tenths of a point in the all-important 18-49 demo. It looks like I'm not the only one who thinks The Balkan story has been a bust.

One Life to Live lost 28,000 total viewers over the previous week, which is a fairly meager amount. The soap held steady in households. The bad news for Llanview lovers is OLTL hit a new all-time low in viewers 18-49. Now from what I gather that number isn't quite as important as the actual ratings percentage, but it still stinks to low Eterna. Bad Daddy Ford (John Wesley Shipp) was running amuck something fierce that week. Who knows if that played a factor in the soap's ratings? Personally, I loved the nasty pants character. RIP.

All My Children dropped 11,000 total viewers over the previous week. AMC held steady in households and among women 18-49, like OLTL, however all three Mouse House soaps were tied with their all-time low rating in the coveted demo. Zach's (Thorsten Kaye) memorial took place during the week in question on AMC and Cara (Lindsay Hartley) made her way to in Pine Valley. As I said on a recent podcast, I love me some Caliente Cara and Guapo Griffin (Jordi Vilasuso). I can't wait until someone sets some Pine Valley sheets on FIYA with these two!

The Bell soaps over at CBS didn't have much room to smirk the week of Dec. 6-10. The Young and the Restless dropped 118,000 total viewers. Hmm, I wonder if Shick fans tuned out rather than see their girl Share Bear (Sharon Case) ripped to shreds for doing the horizontal stanky leg with blind babynapper Adam (Michael Muhney)? I dunno, I kinda liked that week in Genoa City. Y&R held steady in households and among women 18-49.

The Bold and the Beautiful dropped 75,000 total viewers over the previous week. B&B dropped one-tenth of a point in households, tying it's all-time low rating in that demo. The 30-minute sudser held steady among women 18-49.

I am really enjoying most of B&B right now. Taylor (Hunter Tylo) calling out Ridge's (Ron Moss) name while Whip (Rick Hearst) was hitting it was good soap, as was Ridge freaking out over Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) and Thomas' (Adam Gregory) steamy Taboo shoot. If I have one gripe about B&B, it's the character regression of 30-something Amber Moore Forrester Ashby Romalotti (Adrienne Frantz).

We watched Amber grow up years ago, first on B&B, thanks to her friendships with Stephanie (Susan Flannery) and Taylor (Hunter Tylo), then again on Y&R, in large part due to the mentoring of "Mrs. C" aka Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper), not to mention Daniel's (Michael Graziadei) love. So to see her skulking around town like an aging, one-dimensional, teen vamp, doing battle with the much younger child of one of her most infamous lovers over a pair of boys, just seems stupid. Recast Rick (Kyle Lowder) with someone who doesn't think scenery is the breakfast of champions and get Amber out of the teen/young adult storyline pronto!

Days of Our Lives went up 27,000 total viewers over the previous week. DAYS held steady in households and among women 18-49. My fave soap still on the air has me so perplexed these days. EJ and Sami (James Scott and Alison Sweeney) are still as hot as Hades, but I am sick and tired of these two doing unspeakable things to one another, rather than just admit they belong together. What's next, EJ hits Sami in head with a baseball bat, only for them to make love a week later, where she gets pregnant with their 84th child? Enough already!  Well, that's all for now. I hope you all have a very Soapy Christmas!
