Ratings, Rants and Raves: Bad Week for One Life to Live

With the kiddos headin' back to school the week of Jan. 3-7, 2011, most soaps saw noticeable dips. (Source: Soap Opera Network) ABC Daytime's One Life to Live was the hardest hit, shedding a whopping 474,000 total viewers.

OLTL fell two-tenths of a point in households and among women 18-49, tying it's lowest rating ever in the latter demo. The sudser also hit a new low among women 18-34. I'm trying not to read too much into this, because as I mentioned, kids returned to school, and their parents to work, following the Christmas holidays the week in question, but the fact that The Talk's peeps are bragging about beating OLTL in W18-34 and tying them in W18-49 does make me a bit squeamish.

All the big three needs to see is that they can sling together some lackluster talk show for a fraction of the budget of a soap and then achieve the same numbers for them to consider going all cancel happy. I can't think of anything storywise that was all that off putting about OLTL this particular week. I loved Pregnant Natalie (Melissa Archer) going all Buchanan and holding that shotgun on Marty (Susan Haskell), plus David Vickers (Tuc Watkins) was as funny as hell! I mean, I know Inez (Jessica Leccia) is boring and one-note, but she's more engaging than Sara Gilbert. Come on people!

General Hospital was also hard hit the week of Jan. 3-7, dropping 359,000 total viewers. GH went down two-tenths of a point in households and among women 18-49, however GH held steady in women 18-34.This sucks even moreso for GH since the aftermath of the big bus crash happened this week. Looks like people weren't into watching bloody children while they took down ornaments.

All My Children fell 170,000 among total viewers, however AMC was the only ABC soaps to hold steady in households. AMC dropped one-tenth of a point among women 18-49, yet held steady among women 18-34, tying it's all-time low. Much of AMC bored me to tears this week. Caleb (Michael Nouri) and Erica (Susan Lucci) kissing certainly didn't make the Earth move for me.

The best part of the week on AMC was the incredible Finn Witrock (Damon) and yeah, he's leaving... Sigh. Wishful Storyline: Now that David's (Vincent Irizarry) coming around, why not have him blackmail Erica into marriage in order to keep him quiet about Rapunz-Kendall (Alicia Minshew) busting a cap in that a$$?

Over at NBC, Days of Our Lives went down 172,000 total viewers. DAYS held steady in households, but went up one-tenth of a point among women 18-49, and two-tenths of a point among women 18-34. DAYS had a lot of drama going on, with the aftermath of the Parker Paternity Pickle reveal and Little Johnny running away. What's that they say, a child will lead them to impressive demos?

The Bell soaps both dropped in total viewers the week of Jan. 3-7. The Young and the Restless went down 179,000, but kept well over five million pairs of eyeballs glued to the shenanigans going on in Genoa City, Wisconsin.Y&R held steady in households and among women 18-34, but dipped two-tenths of a point among women 18-49. I simply cannot understand why women in such a coveted demo wouldn't just be thrilled at all of those wonderful story arcs featuring Daisy (Yvonne Zima) the week in question? Snort.

B&B dropped the least total viewers of any soap for the week, losing only 67,000. B&B went down one-tenth of point in households and among women 18-49. B&B did manage to hold steady in women 18-34. I'm still finding B&B quite enjoyable these days, especially the Taboo storyline, which saw a clueless Ridge (Ron Moss) arranging for an overseas press junket for his hella hot wife and his hella hot son the week in question.

I'm still not crazy about Amber (Adrienne Frantz) regressing 15 years, but it's providing a juicy story for the brilliant Scott Clifton (Liam) and promising ingenue Kimberly Matula (Hope), so I can deal. Plus I love seeing Tawny (Andrea Evans) back in SoCal. Wishful Storytelling: Can we please see Tawny make a play for Dollar Bill (Don Diamont) or A Martinez's upcoming character? See you next ratings cycle!
