Who didn't see this one coming? With news breaking today that CBS has reportedly taken their talk show offer to Katie Couric off the table, it looks like ABC is the only network willing to possibly give Couric what she wants (Sidenote: Why exactly is Couric still so in demand considering she tanked at CBS? I liked her on Today and all, but seriously). Where would ABC-U-Later-Soaps put Couric's hypotherical 2012 talker, you ask? Well Variety seems to think a Couric chatfest could replace one of the two shows set to replace All My Children and One Life to Live, or the last ABC soap standing, General Hospital.
Talk of the Alphabet making such a move comes weeks after ABC announced plans to fold its daytime soaps, "All My Children" and "One Life to Live," in favor of two unscripted skeins. Couric's show could possibly replace one of the new shows, or it could be eyed for the early afternoon slot now held by sudser "General Hospital."
Rumors have been running rampant since ABC announced they were shelving AMC and OLTL for The Spew and All My Strechmarks that General Hospital would likely go off the air in the fall of 2012. A high profile talk show being possibly slated for GH's timeslot definitely gives that rumor more legs. Let's see a show of hands for anyone who will take one word of assurance about GH's future at ABC from anyone working for Brian Frons? Time to start those "Save General Hospital" campaigns.
