Ratings, Rants and Raves: All Soaps Inch Upward!

There's good news to report on the Nielsens front for a change! (Source: Soap Opera Network) All four daytime soaps went up in total viewers the week of April 23-27 and a couple of sudser also made improvements in key demos over the previous week.

CBS Daytime's The Young and the Restless saw the biggest gain in total viewers, shooting up 141,000 pairs of eyeballs. Y&R also went up one-tenth of a point in households, yet held steady among women 18-49 and among W18-34.

Near identical custody sagas drove story on Y&R the week in question. A judge awarded Daisy (Yvonne Zima) custody of Lucy when Daniel (Michael Grazadei) was deemed neglectful of the tyke. Genoa City's other resident girl rapist, Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan), signed over her rights to Baby John to Villy. I wouldn't be surprised if all those teasers of Lauren Fenmore (Tracey Bregman) pulling a gun on Daisy caused people to tune in, hoping to finally be rid of the vapid, non-character whom the brass stubbornly seems to believe is a worthy rival to Lauren and Phyllis (Michelle Stafford). No such luck.

Baby John's christening was quite eventful, thanks to Jack (Peter Bergman) showing up with Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) and Victor (Eric Braeden) bringing Genevieve (Genie Francis). There was also the return of a now adult Kyle Abbott (Blake Hood) to consider.

The Bold and the Beautiful went up 56,000 total viewers. B&B didn't budge in any key demos, however. In story, Hope (Kimberly Matula) blasted Amber (Adrienne Frantz) for tricking her into taking dirty, online drugs. Then she got all geeked up for her trip to Aspen with Liam (Scott Clifton).Over at Spencer Communications, Bill (Don Diamont) didn't have much time to worry about diminishing ad rates for style bibles, because he was busy plotting his next scheme to take down Hope in the snowy paradise. I'm about ready for this particular song to stop being played on a loop.

Days of Our Lives went up 7,000 total viewers over the previous week. DAYS also went up one-tenth of a point among W18-34 and held steady in the other major demos. Storywise, Stefano (Joe Mascolo) learned Lexie (Renee Jones) is dying and that he may be responsible, due to the time he had crazy Andre (Thaao Penghlis) hold her captive underground. Don't you just hate it when you cause your daughter to develop a grapefruit-size tumor in her dome?

Elsewhere in Salem, U.S.A., EJ (James Scott) begged Nicole (Arianne Zucker) for another chance. After some coaxing, she agreed, but only if they could leave Salem. Come on Nik, you know doggone well EJ ain't going that far away from Sami (Alison Sweeney)! Speaking of Sami, she convinced Lucas (Bryan Datillo) to come to work with her at Countess W, going head-to-head with Madison (Sarah Brown) and her new co-CEO Kate (Lauren Koslow). I would love to get excited about this story, but we all know another reboot is a' comin'! There was also some silly mess about codes and eggs and Rafe (Galen Gering) and Carrie (Christie Clark), but yeah, you get the gist.

General Hospital went up an impressive 127,000 total viewers. GH also went up one-tenth of a point in households and among W18-34 respectively. Port Charles was on FIYA the week in question, as Sonny's (Maurice Benard) birthday party erupted like a volcano during Sweeps on The Young and the Restless.

The party's aftermath found Sonny and Carly (Laura Wright) catching Kate/Connie (Kelly Sullivan) in bed with Johnny (Brandon Barash). On the other side of town, JaSam continued to unravel as Jason (Steve Burton) learned everything that Sam (Kelly Monaco) had been keeping from him. I have to say, Jason has been acting like a bit of a dick to Sam — and y'all know I ain't that girl's biggest fan! She was the one who was raped, by his diabolical, mustache-twirling, secret, twin movie star brother. Why does he get to cop an attitude? I mean, so yeah, she turned to Caleb, er McBain (Michael Easton). Who wouldn't? I am so ready for Liz/Jason/Sam/McBain. Throw in Natalie (Melissa Archer) and I would be over the moon like Casey The Alien's spaceship!

Other big stories for the week on GH included: Lulu (Julie Marie Berman) getting a little too close to the truth for the stripper-beater-upper's liking; my Lizzie Beth (Rebecca Herbst) finding Dr. Sexy (Nathin Butler) with his walnut cracked (They so have to bone before she goes back to Jason. Hell, he's had Sam for over a year, Liz needs one last pre-Liason romp!) and wild ass Heather Webber (Robin Mattson) cutting up and acting a plum fool over her son, Steven Lars (Scott Reeves), being arrested. Yep, GH is officially Must See Soap again!
