Dexter Recap: “A Little Reflection”

Dexter (MichaelC. Hall) was monitoring Zach Hamilton, who he suspected of killing his maid.  He noticed Zach photographing crime scenes, and stalking a new victim.  Zach had an obsession with blood, like Dexter, and was also seeing Dr. Vogel (Charlotte Rampling).

Dexter confronted Dr. Vogel, who said she thought they were similar.  Dexter was offended, and disagreed, since Zach killed innocents.  He said he’d kill Zach once he found concrete proof he was a killer.  After he did, he informed Vogel.  She suggested they teach Zach The Code instead, but Dexter refused.

Dexter figured out when Zach was going to snatch his next victim, and determined he would get to him before that.  However, Zach surprised him.  Instead of going after his dad’s new mistress, Zach was stalking his dad.  Dexter drugged him right before he could stab his father.  Zach woke up on Dexter’s kill table.

He had killed Norma for sleeping with his dad because of what it was doing to his beloved mother.  She was drinking herself to death because of his habitual cheating.  After his father had gotten a new mistress, just days later, he said the only way to save his mother was to kill his dad.

Dexter also made Zach admit he did it because of the blood and a need to kill.  It sounded just like what Dexter had said about his Dark Passenger in the past.  Zach said Dexter should kill him because he knew he wouldn’t be able to stop himself from killing again.

Instead, Dexter let him go.  He would mentor Zach the way Harry mentored him.  I think this is a really cool development, and kind of feel like the show has come full circle.  I hope it doesn’t end badly!

Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) teamed up with her boss, Elway (Sean Patrick Flanery), to catch his sister’s boyfriend cheating.  Deb was the bait, and they succeeded at breaking them up.  However, Debra became uncomfortable when she realized Elway had feelings for her.  She didn’t know how she was ever going to be able to have a relationship with someone, if she couldn’t open up about sort of being a murderer now.

Elsewhere, Masuka had a falling out with his daughter, when he revealed he thought she could be a gold-digger.  Quinn didn’t make sergeant, and Dexter missed his chance with Cassie.

However, Debra and Dexter’s relationship was getting back to normal.  They were even meeting for their steak and beer dinners again.  At one such dinner date, Debra started to feel woozy all of a sudden, like she’d been drugged.  Dexter went to help her, but then he fell ill too.

Just then, Hannah walked into his apartment, asking, “Remember me?”  Somehow, she was out of jail and poisoned them!  This was done really well.  Although, it would have been better if the opening credits and press materials hadn’t said Yvonne Strahovski would be back this episode.  The whole time I kept thinking, “Where’s Hannah?”  I forgot by the end of the ep, and really loved how she just popped out when you least expected it!
