A spokesperson for Dr. Phil has responded to BuzzFeed after the popular site asked about the talk show host's controversial tweet, which sparked outrage on Twitter.

“This tweet was intended to evoke discussion leading into a very serious show topic. It was not intended to be taken lightly,” the spokesperson said. “It’s based upon a recent news story, hence the #teensaccused label.”

The controversy erupted on Twitter Tuesday evening when Dr. Phil tweeted the question, "If a girl is drunk, is it OK to have sex with her? Reply yes or no to @drphil #teenaccused."

The tweet was later deleted, which then spawned the hashtag #DrPhilQuestions.
