Jill Farren Phelps has had her acceptance speeches cut off before. Since the Daytime Emmys are not allowed to run long the way other awards shows do, the executive producer of the Outstanding Daytime Drama, which is always the final category, often has only a few seconds to say thank you before the ending credits roll.
The Young and the Restless showrunner never experienced anything like the end of Sunday night's Daytime Emmys, however. Even though the awards were running well under two hours when Phelps took the stage to accept Y&R's Outstanding Drama series win, host Kathy Griffin inexplicably interrupted her speech saying, "Oh Jesus Christ. Oh for God's sake with your pride of ownership.Wrap it up, lady! Wrap it up. I get it. You're young and you're restless You won! If you name your f---ing dog, I swear to God..."
A visibly flustered Phelps replied that she wanted to "thank her f----g daughter."
In the press room, a bemused Phelps said, "I was going to name a lot of people I didn’t get to name, but I think they all know who they are. And I think I said f--- on television, or streaming or whatever this is. So I’m not sure if that’s cool."
Phelps was thrilled with Y&R's massive Daytime Emmy haul, singling out the show's actresses for special praise. "I started to think about the actresses. I know that many [soaps] have a long legacy, but this one has so much history. We have so many characters that have been on for many years."
Phelps concluded her brief appearance in the press room with a plea for fans and critics to go easy on Y&R, which has been the subject of a lot of recent criticism—both for its storylines and a decline in the ratings. "Be kind to Y&R. We’re kicking ass."
