Pretty Little Liars Recap: Surfing the Aftershocks

On this week’s Pretty Little Liars, Alison (Sasha Pieterse) was stunned over her mother’s death. The girls were sympathetic, but upset at having to lie for her again.

They also wanted to get hard evidence Jason (Drew Van Acker) was the culprit. Spencer (Troian Bellisario) refused to believe the worst of her half-brother. Who’s attacking the DiLaurentis clan?

Spencer defied her family and continued to speak to Jason. She wanted to get to the bottom of why Jason looked guilty. They figured out whoever Mrs. D was writing the email to the night she died, was probably who killed her. She'd gone to deliver the message about Ali being alive in person.

Before Jason left town again he told Spencer not to trust their shady bio-dad. Jason thought the email had been meant for their dad.

Spencer confronted her dad with the email, and Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) flipped out. Melissa said she wanted to tell Spencer the truth, but their dad prevented it.

It definitely seemed like he didn’t want her hearing something that would make her an accessory. Spencer left, but there’s no way she’ll drop it.

Aria (Lucy Hale) reluctantly visited a recuperating Fitz (Ian Harding) at his apartment. The girls wanted to make sure Fitz didn’t contradict Ali’s kidnapping story.

Aria also lied to him about Shana (Aeriél Miranda) being dead. Alison visited Fitz later and hit on him— because Alison is the worst. She also confronted him about his tell-all.

Alison wanted the information he left out. Fitz said anything he might still have, he only kept because it could be used to help Aria.

Fitz told Aria about Alison’s visit right away, which in turn prompted Aria’s confession about killing Shana in self-defense. Fitz vowed to do all he can to protect her.

Alison chided Hanna (Ashley Benson) about once being overweight — because Ali is a terrible friend. This sparked an identity crisis in Hanna.

She remembered when Mona (Janel Parrish) first befriended her after Alison disappeared. Hanna realized Mona turned her into a carbon copy of Alison. After this realization, it prompted a mini-hair makeover.

Mona also continued to be coy; she taunted the girls about their (mis)adventure in New York. Is she going to blow their cover story?

Elsewhere, Emily (Shay Mitchell) began mentoring a new girl on the swim team named Sydney. Paige (Lindsey Shaw) used the opportunity to try and get closer to Em again.

Emily still didn’t want to get back together, but said maybe they could be friends. Since it never takes much for Paige to go full-psycho, Emily should probably watch her back.

Did Mr. Hastings attack Alison that night? Was Mrs. D protecting her lover, or was she helping protect his daughter? Did one of them kill her to make her stay quiet? Will any of our questions ever get answered on this show? Stay tuned!
