Chuck Pratt Gets Head Writer Gig and an Executive Producer Credit at The Young and the Restless

The rumors are true. Chuck Pratt has been named the new head writer of CBS Daytime's The Young and the Restless. Highlight Hollywood first broke news of Pratt's negotiations.

I confirmed the news with an insider at the top daytime sudser. Pratt will be head writer and will receive an executive producer credit, though, from what I hear, that will be more about money than anything else. Jill Farren Phelps is remaining as showrunner.

Pratt has a long and tumultuous history writing for both daytime and primetime soap operas. Many fans and critics—including me at the time—blamed him for putting the final nail in All My Children's coffin.

Pratt has also written for General Hospital, Santa Barbara and co-created Sunset Beach for daytime. In primetime, he helped make successes out of Melrose Place, Beverly Hills, 90210, Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty. Most recently, Pratt adapted the YA series The Lying Game for ABC Family.

"Pratt is a good storyteller, and that's what Y&R needs," says a source.
