No. 10: Quinn Goes Off The Rails, The Bold and the Beautiful
Bell family soap operas have a long and grand history of creating memorable female psychos. While jewelry designer Quinn Fuller (Rena Sofer) isn't quite as unstable as the late, great Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown), the brunette bombshell did have us flashing back to killer bee attacks this past year on The Bold and the Beautiful.
Quinn's obsession with orchestrating a happy union for her son Wyatt (Darin Brooks) and Hope Logan (Kim Matula) led to her almost killing Liam (Scott Clifton) with a sword, pushing Ivy (Ashleigh Brewer) into the River Seine and ambushing both Hope's sonogram and baby shower!
While Quinn wasn't responsible for the nasty tumble that cost Hope and Wyatt their baby, had she not been at the Logan mansion arguing with the fashionista it could have been avoided. Unfortunately for the Forresters, Logans and Spencer, Quinn is never one to avoid drama.
No. 9: Phyllis Exposes Sharon’s Lie, The Young and the Restless
We weren't sure what Phyllis Newman (Gina Tognoni) remembered from before her coma on The Young and the Restless. Did Red have a recollection of learning Sharon (Sharon Case) had tampered with Summer's (Hunter King) DNA test? Did she know she and Sharon had been squabbling over a cell phone atop a stairwell when she fell?
Phyllis had total recall just in time for Shick's second attempt at getting remarried. She tricked Sharon into returning with her to the scene of the crime — the stairwell outside of where Nikki's (Melody Thomas Scott) fundraiser was held. There, Phyllis refreshed Sharon's memory and later informed Nick (Joshua Morrow) and Jack (Peter Bergman) of her rival's heinous acts.
Sharon, having undergone electroshock therapy to treat her bipolar disorder, clung to the fact that she wasn't well when she did those unspeakable things. Nick, Jack and Red weren't hearing it. Sharon lost everything and Phyllis got her revenge for that year-long nap.
No. 8: The Battle For Forrester Creations, The Bold and the Beautiful
We've been begging the four remaining daytime soap operas to give us a juicy corporate storyline for years. The Bold and the Beautiful delivered big in 2014, by once again having the Forrester brothers face-off over control of their father's fashion house.
This time around, Ridge vs. Rick wasn't some silly feud worthy of constant replays on The Soup. With Jacob Young back in the role of Rick and Thorsten Kaye as Ridge, the battle had much more gravitas and testosterone, as opposed to camp and theatrics.
Internationally-renowned fashion designer Ridge lost the ability to draw, after being thrown from a helicopter into the Persian Gulf. Meanwhile, Rick was putting pressure on his big brother to produce another game-changing couture line.
A desperate Ridge found a willing muse in Rick's impressionable and slightly-vapid wife Caroline (Linsey Godfrey). While secretly sketching together, Ridge picked up on Caroline crushing on him. He used her affections—stoked by a couple of smooches—to ensure Eric (John McCook) named Ridge the company's new CEO.
All appeared lost for Rick, until ex-flame Maya Avant (Karla Mosley) outed Ridge and Caroline's betrayal in a packed board meeting. Eric eventually rescinded his offer to Ridge and named Rick CEO! Rick thanked Maya with his penis and a new fashion scheme team was formed.
No. 7: Hilary Cheats on Neil With Devon, The Young and the Restless
The hottest thing going on in Genoa City, Wisconsin in 2014, was the raunchy, secret love affair of Devon Hamilton (Bryton James) and Hilary Winters (Mishael Morgan). Neil's son and trophy wife tried unsuccessfully to fight their feelings for one another on The Young and the Restless.
The scandalous duo was all set to tell Neil they were in love, when the Winters patriarch was blinded while working on the dream house he'd purchased for Hilary. And here you felt guilty about that ugly tie you bought your dad last Father's Day.
Out of respect for Neil's blindness, Hilary tried to be a dutiful wife and stop screwing her stepson. Devon must really be able to lay pipe, because helping Neil with his braille is the last thing on Hilary's mind these days.
No. 6: Kristen’s Return, Days of Our Lives
Kristen Blake DiMera's (Eileen Davidson) returns to Salem U.S.A. are akin to the first bright, bursts of sunlight, following the longest winters ever. The wicked heiress kidnapped Dr. Daniel Jonas (Shawn Christian), to try to force him to help her get back with Brady Black (Eric Martsolf) in 2014 on Days of Our Lives.
Dr. Dan managed to do what John Black (Drake Hogestyn), the ISA and Salem PD couldn't. He turned the tables on a DiMera and brought her to justice. That medical school he graduated from must have been highly accredited!
Like Scarlett O'Hara before her, our Kristen refused to be cornered. Sure, the Bradys could throw the book at her for raping ex-priest Eric (Greg Vaughan). If they did, John would stay in a coma for the rest of his life! Yep, Lady D had the cure for what ailed John and traded it for her freedom.
Oh, but she wasn't finished. Kristen also used her state-of-the-art spy tech gear to prove Theresa Donovan (Jen Lilley)—not Brady—hit John with the fireplace poker. Later, she had the girl kidnapped and stole Theresa and Brady's fetus from her womb!
Is it any wonder we get so sad whenever we hear Davidson is returning to The Young and the Restless, where she hasn't had a decent storyline written for her since Bill Bell was alive? We need Kristen in Salem 24/7.
No. 5: The Fall of Nick Fallon, Days of Our Lives
Most modern daytime soap operas fall into the trap of never allowing the big antihero to have a worthy opponent. No one ever bests Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) on The Young and the Restless. Until recently, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) never paid for his crimes on General Hospital.
Days of Our Lives bucked this boring trend by giving power couple Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) and EJ DiMera (James Scott) a foe capable of matching them dirty trick for dirty trick. Okay, technically Nick Fallon (Blake Berris) was Will Horton's (Chandler Massey/Guy Wilson) enemy, but the lad's mom and stepdad had to fight his battles for him in 2014.
Sami, Kate (Lauren Koslow) and Gabi (Camila Banus) thought they were done with Nick after their watery adventure in the woods. The sexy sociopath proved he knew how to hold his breath when he turned up alive, well and ready to blackmail.
Nick forced Kate to give him a job. He strong-armed Gabi into reuniting with him and tormented EJ and Abby (Kate Mansi) with photographic proof of their illicit tryst. This guy stopped at nothing to get what he wanted.
Nick wasn't afraid of the DiMera power base, or a legendary bad-ass like Sami. In the end, it wasn't EJ or Sami who took Nick out, it was the woman he loved, Gabi, who gunned him down. We will never forget the blood-soaked, evil genius gasping his last breaths in the town square named for his family.
No. 4: Nina Unhinged, General Hospital
The year 2014 was a great time to be a crazy bitch on a daytime soap. Long-suffering heroines are so 2013!
While Quinn (Rena Sofer) was wielding swords on The Bold and the Beautiful, Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) was waking up from a coma with a vengeance on The Young and the Restless and Kristen (Eileen Davidson) was stealing fetuses on Days of Our Lives, Nina Clay (Michelle Stafford) was doing all of that and more on General Hospital!
Well, to clarify, Nina didn't use a sword in Port Charles, New York. Her weapon of choice was a lamp, which she used to bludgeon her own mother (primetime soap legend Donna Mills).
Madeline had it coming. She gave her daughter a drug that caused Nina to lose Silas Clay's (Michael Easton) baby and end up in a coma for 20 years! Madeline wasn't the only enemy Nina needed to make pay. Girlfriend had a list!
First up was Sam Morgan (Kelly Monaco). Nina make quick work out of torpedoing the private dick's budding relationship with Silas. Then she set her sights on Kiki Jerome (Kristen Alderson), the lovechild Silas shares with Ava Jerome (Maura West). Nina tried to make her nurse screw Kiki's boyfriend, just for poots and giggles!
Like Vanessa Williams, Nina saved the best of her revenge schemes for last. When she learned Ava was once again with child, Nina set out to steal the woman's baby! The scenes where Nina drugged Ava to paralyze her and induce labor were some of the most harrowing we've ever watched on daytime or primetime. We're talking American Horror Story: Port Charles.
Amid all her madness, Nina managed to find a dear friend and kindred spirit in fellow lunatic Franco (Roger Howarth). This relationship, along with her affection for her brother "Jay" aka Nathan (Ryan Paevey), humanized Nina just enough to keep her from being too over-the-top to root for.
No. 3: Who Killed AJ?, General Hospital
Long-time General Hospital fans were furious with the soap for killing off legacy character AJ Quartermaine (Sean Kanan) for a second time in 2014. To borrow from head writer Ron Carlivati, some times you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet.
GH served up a tasty brunch treat weekday afternoons with the fallout of AJ's demise. Mob boss Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) broke his promise to beloved, adopted son Michael (Chad Duell) when he ended the life of Michael's biological father.
Sonny's every move was manipulated by blonde bombshell Ava Jerome (Maura West), who was desperately trying to keep anyone from learning that she, not AJ, had killed Sonny's childhood love Connie Falconeri (Kelly Sullivan).
Sonny was so grief stricken over betraying Michael, he had sex with Ava—his other son's girlfriend—in the Quartermaine crypt. Morgan (Bryan Craig) walked in post coitus and instantly knew of Ava and Sonny's betrayal. By the by, did Alice (Bergen Williams) ever Febreze that crypt?
While Morgan was temporarily done with his father, Michael permanently severed ties with Sonny after learning how AJ really died. By this point in time, Sonny knew Ava had played him and planned to kill her the second she gave birth to either his or Morgan's baby. Most guys just hand out cigars.
Sonny's undoing came at the hands of resident whack job Franco (Roger Howarth). Franco wasn't pleased when he learned fiancée Carly Corinthos-Jacks (Laura Wright) was sampling her four-time ex-husband's linguini sauce again.
Franco did what any rational cuckold would do, he rigged the ugliest necklace known to man to record Sonny and Carly's trysts and managed to get them talking about Sonny killing AJ on tape. I think we all need to check our cholesterol after all of those broken eggs!
No. 2: EJAbby’s Affair, Days of Our Lives
EJ DiMera (James Scott) and Sami Brady's (Alison Sweeney) love affair survived a lot of atrocities on Days of Our Lives. He forced her to have sex with him, before he would save Lucas Horton's (Bryan Dattilo) life. He sued her for custody of their children. She lied to him about their children even existing. He shot her stepfather. She shot him and for good measure, her son shot him too! We get exhausted thinking about it.
Nothing was more damaging to EJami's love story than his affair with Abigail Deveraux (Kate Mansi). EJ initially befriended Abigail because he felt sorry about what a cad his brother Chad (Casey Deidrick/Billy Flynn) had been to the young woman.
While it was obvious Abigail was developing a crush on the dashing Brit, EJ never had any intention of pursuing anything with Abigail. He only tracked her down that fateful day at the Horton cabin to ensure she wouldn't convey her suspicions about Nick Fallon's (Blake Berris) disappearance to anyone else in her family.
Before either knew what was happening, EJ had Abigail so preoccupied with multiple orgasms she didn't have time to worry about her cousin's fate. EJ tried to break things off with Abigail, but the young woman was persistent. She even offered to be EJ's no-strings-attached mistress! The late Alice Horton (Frances Reid) was rolling like a donut in her grave at her wanton great-granddaughter's behavior, but we couldn't stop watching.
Then Sami found out, which leads us to our No. 1 Best Soap Opera Storyline of 2014...
No. 1: Sami and Kate’s Revenge, Days of Our Lives
They say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Multiply that by two and Salem U.S.A.'s DiMera men were in danger of being burned alive on Days of Our Lives in 2014.
Mortal enemies Kate Roberts (Lauren Koslow) and Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) found common ground in their desire to make their ex-husbands pay this past year. Stefano (Joe Mascolo) hired a man to try to sever the lusty, Latin member of Kate's boy toy Rafe (Galen Gering). Stefano's son EJ (James Scott) cheated on Sami with her art tutor.
Their mutual disgust for the men in their lives allowed Sami and Kate to put aside two decades of bad blood and team up. The pair of she-wolves channeled their most destructive scheming capabilities towards the unified goal of destroying House DiMera.
Kate and Sami leaked evidence of tax evasion to the authorities, barring Stefano from being able to re-enter the country and having EJ arrested following his wedding to Sami. EJ, clueless to Sami's treachery, signed over control of his family empire to his wife.
Kate quickly blackmailed Sami into making her co-CEO of DiMera Enterprises, allowing the women Stefano and EJ loved to do what no one in Salem had ever managed — they toppled the Phoenix and Son.
