One of The CW's other-worldly teen soaps just lost its leading lady.
Nina Dobrev took to Instagram to reveal she won't be returning for a seventh season of The Vampire Diaries. Read her goodbye message below.
Dobrev has starred as Elena Gilbert, the young woman at the center of TVD's tentpole love triangle with vampire brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), since 2009. While the series boasts an ensemble cast, losing its leading lady is a huge blow to the franchise. Additionally, Michael Trevino, who plays Tyler Lockwood, has been released from the series to do the pilot for ABC's Revenge spinoff, The Kingmakers.
Of course, this won't be the first time a teen soap had to continue without one or more of its top stars. When Shannen Doherty's behind-the-scenes antics got her and Brenda Walsh booted from the original Beverly Hills, 90210, the sudser brought on Tiffani Thiessen as Valerie Malone and ran for six more seasons.
One Tree Hill managed to survive the exits of Chad Michael Murrary and Hilarie Burton and The O.C. had a creative (if not ratings) renaissance following the departure of Mischa Barton's hot mess Marissa Cooper.
Only time and the Nielsens will tell if TVD can keep luring in tween and teen eyeballs without Elena and all her various doppelgangers. Will you still watch TVD without Dobrev and Trevino? Sound off in the comments!
