NBC's Days of Our Lives has brought back a slew of fan favorites to kick off the soap opera's 50th anniversary. While DAYS' actual cake day is November 8, 2015, the festivities are set to begin next month with the return of Stephen Nichols a Salem superhero Steven "Patch" Johnson.
Nichols will be the first of many beloved stars hitting our airwaves in late 2015. With the show now taping episodes that will likely air in January of 2016, I hope they're still of the mindset of keeping the 50th anniversary momentum going all of next year! Below are 10 more stars we'd love to see return for the celebration.
10. Matthew Ashford as Jack Deveraux
When Days of Our Lives executive producer and co-owner Ken Corday revealed in Soap Opera Digest Matt Ashford didn't make the 50th Anniversary cut, I wanted to write a strongly-worded letter to the editor. No, not to Stephanie Sloane, Digest's editor, to the editor of The Salem Spectator!
I desperately need my favorite witty, acerbic, roving journalist back in Salem bantering and bedding Jennifer Rose Horton (Melissa Horton). Jack and Jenn's children, Abigail (Kate Mansi) and JJ (Casey Moss), could also use a little more parental guidance. Those two have been using their daddy/mommy issues as an excuse to slut around Salem, tarnishing the Horton name, for years!
I know, I know, Jack fell down an elevator shaft and died during the last reboot of the show. Andre DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) has died countless times. He's returning for the anniversary! No excuses. #BringBackJack
9. Renee Jones as Dr. Lexi Carver
Before the realistic storytelling police grab their ticket pads to cite me, I'm not asking for dearly-departed physician Dr. Lexi DiMera Carver (Renee Jones) to crawl up out of the Salem cemetery. Jack is the only return from the dead I'm asking for in this post. However, it would be nice to see Lexi's ghost pay a visit to her soon-to-be-SORASed son, Theo.
8. Charles Shaughnessy as Shane Donovan
Bo Brady (Peter Reckell) and Patch Johnson (Stephen Nichols) are going to need backup regarding whatever top secret mission they'll be working on during the 50th anniversary season. Who better than the International Security Alliance's most dashing secret agent, Shane Donovan (Charles Shaughnessy)?
In between all the espionage and excitement, Daddy Donovan can take a little time to provide a firm hand to his wild and wanton daughters, Eve (Kassie DePaiva) and Jeannie Theresa (Jen Lilley). Those girls seriously need a time out, and/or a thrashing with their dashing pa's buggy whip.
7. Patsy Pease as Kimberly Brady Donovan
Shane without Kim (Patsy Pease) is like a friend without a lover. The beautiful, eldest Brady daughter must return with her hubby to resume the business of getting their wayward daughter, Theresa, back in line.
Lilley and Pease are the cutest mother/daughter combo in TV. I want to see what they can accomplish if they're provided more than blink-and-you-missed it visits from Pease. Maybe Shane and Kim can bring their son Andrew home to Salem with them?
6. Roark Critchlow as Dr. Mike Horton
It's been far too long since there was a Horton running University Hospital. No offense to Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) or Dr. Daniel Jonas (Shawn Christian), but that is the hospital Tom Horton (the late MacDonald Carey) built. I want to see his grandson, Mike (Roark Crichtlow), return as Chief of Staff!
Mike Horton's paternity saga was one of the storylines the late Bill Bell, Sr. used to put DAYS on the map in the 60's and 70's. The 50th anniversary season won't be the same without at least one Doc Horton in town.
5. Christie Clark as Carrie Brady
Carrie Brady (Christie Clark) is one of the most beloved and endearing heroines in the history of Days of Our Lives. Her various romantic entanglements kept younger viewers turning in throughout the late 80's, 90's and 2000's. Of course, that scheming little sister didn't hurt!
I want Carrie to return sans either of her Austins (Patrick Muldoon and Austin Peck) and resume her red-hot romance with Mike Horton. Wishful Storytelling: What if a patient dies on Mike's watch, causing the hospital to be sued? Legal eagle Carrie Brady to the rescue!
4. Denise Alexander as Susan Hunter Martin
Ken Corday has promised more of Salem's premiere supercouple, Doug and Julie Williams (Bill and Susan Seaforth Hayes), for the 50th Anniversary season. What better way to heat up Doug and Julie's storyline than by bringing back the scheming minx who was responsible for them being together in the first place?
Susan Hunter (Denise Alexander) and Julie Olson were malt-sharing best friends, until Susan married Julie's beau, David Martin, and killed him! This launched a bitter feud that drove story for years on Days of Our Lives.
It was Susan who paid convict Doug Williams to seduce her rival. Of course, she had no idea Doug would fall madly in love with Julie. Okay, so he did marry Julie's mom and father a daughter with her, it didn't diminish his love for Jules!
Susan has to be somewhere nursing a seriously gnarly grudge over Doug and Julie's endearing happiness. I would love for the show to reveal Susan is the mother of Hope's current boyfriend, Aiden Jennings (Daniel Cosgrove). SPOILER ALERT: If rumors of Aiden being killed off are true, just think of how explosive it would be for his mother to return to Salem demanding answers and justice!
3. Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady
Don't freak out, Josh Taylor fans. I am not suggesting the guy lose his job. I am saying it's high time the real Roman Brady (Wayne Northrop) return to Salem to battle John Black (Drake Hogestyn) for Marlena's (Deidre Hall) heart once and for all.
Roman and Marlena were one of the biggest couples of the 80's. They deserve a proper commemoration during the serial's anniversary season. As for Taylor, write him off for a month or so, then bring him back in his previous Salem incarnation, Chris Kositchek. See, everyone wins!
2. James Scott as EJ DiMera
The sexiest, most shockingly-virile thing to happen to DAYS during the last 20 years was the casting of All My Children cast-off James Scott as EJ DiMera. The guy made everyone who shared scenes with him moist – not to mention the audience.
Scott, along with Alison Sweeney as Sami, proved rumors of the supercouple's death were greatly exaggerated. DAYS owes EJami fans a good and proper reunion following that ghastly exit story last year.
1. Susan Flannery as Dr. Laura Horton
Long before there was Marlena, Hope, Kayla, or Jennifer, tragic psychiatrist Dr. Laura Spencer Horton (Susan Flannery) was Salem U.S.A.'s central romantic heroine. A pre-The Bold and the Beautiful Flannery won DAYS its first Outstanding Leading Lady Daytime Emmy for her portrayal of a woman torn between two brothers.
In 2015, threads of the iconic Mickey/Laura/Bill triangle are still playing out. Eve Donovan is currently using Laura's long history of mental instability to gaslight Laura's daughter, Jennifer.
Kate Roberts (Lauren Koslow), the mistress of Laura's late husband, is now viewed as a prominent business woman in Salem. Kate and Bill's illegitimate son, Lucas (Bryan Datillo), Lucas's children and grandchildren, have all been accepted into the Horton family with open arms. That has to be a bitter psyche pill for Laura to swallow, even after all these years!
Imagine powerhouse Flannery returning to daytime in the role that first put her on the map, squaring off with Koslow (whom she starred opposite on B&B). That would be a showdown worth setting your DVR for!
