Billionaire Blake Carrington's (Grant Show) son Steven won't be struggling with his sexuality in The CW's version of Dynasty. The clean energy advocate is written as an out and proud gay man in the pilot written by Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage and former Revenge producer Sallie Patrick. That means Sammy Jo — the bodacious, blonde, unapologetically female bombshell played by Heather Locklear in the original ABC nighttime soap — needed some rethinking.

Deadline is reporting Rafael de La Fuente has been cast as Sam, "a cute schemer who has a one-night stand with Steven". Having read the pilot, I can confirm Sam's full name is Samuel Joseph Flores and he's the nephew of Cristal Flores (Nathalie Kelley). Ring a bell, Dynasty 1.0 fans?

In the O.G. super soap, Sammy Jo was the conniving, hayseed niece of Krystle Carrington (Linda Evans) who became involved with tortured Carrington scion Steven (Al Corley, Jack Coleman). The role of Sammy Jo, along with a gig on TJ Hooker, helped catapult Locklear to the A-list in the 80's.

de La Fuente is no stranger to primetime soap gay storylines. He played Michael Sanchez, boyfriend of Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett) on Fox's smash hit soap Empire. Considering Empire co-creator Lee Daniels is on record as being a huge Dynasty fan, I'd say it makes this casting appropriate. What do you think about this thoroughly modern version of Sammy Jo?
