Veteran actress Genie Francis is finally returning to General Hospital as Laura. Nearly eight months after the soap's executive producer Frank Valentini put the wildly popular actress on recurring status—with the iconic Laura Spencer Collins making a hasty exit from fictional Port Charles—Francis is set to resume taping this September, reports sources.
The last time fans saw Laura, Kevin Collins' (Jon Lindstrom) newlywed wife was abruptly dropping out of the Port Charles mayor's race to take care of rambunctious grandson Spencer (Nicholas Bechtel), who was injured in an off-screen skiing accident at boarding school.
In March, ABC executive Nathan Varni revealed on a podcast GH's writing team was working on a "Laura-centric story." Said Varni:
What we want is a prolific, big story for Laura that deserves the many talents of Genie Francis,” he revealed. “So our writers are thinking and working on that as we speak. It’s my intention that I hope we can continue to have a relationship as Genie obviously is a very important part of GH and the GH family. But you know, we want to be able to service the talents of Genie and we don’t want to just have any tiny little story where she kind of blends into the background. We want a Laura-centric story. So we are continuing to work on that and hopefully, that will be on screen sooner than later.
