Ellen DeGeneres is known for bringing laughter and joy into viewer homes on her daytime talk show, but in a sit-down interview with David Letterman for his Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction the popular host talked about the very serious topic of childhood sexual assault.
DeGeneres shared how she was assaulted as a teenager by her stepfather.
Now, in a statement to NBC News, DeGeneres’ mother Betty DeGeneres responded publicly to her daughter’s story.
“I know now that one of the hardest things to do is speak up after being sexually abused,” Betty said. “I love my daughter, and I wish I had the capacity to listen to her when she told me what happened.
“I live with that regret, and I wouldn’t want that for any other parent. If someone in your life has the courage to speak out, please believe them.”
