Gossip Girl EP Joshua Safran: Reboot Will Have More Diversity, Iconic Twist

With a soapy reboot of Gossip Girl headed to HBO Max, complete with Kristen Bell as narrator, executive producer Joshua Safran is talking about how the remake will be different from the original.

At the 2019 Vulture Festival, Safran noted that the leads will be people of color and there will be LBGTQ+ storylines. He said, per Vulture:

"So, this time around the leads are nonwhite. There’s a lot of queer content on this show. It is very much dealing with the way the world looks now, where wealth and privilege come from, and how you handle that."

Safran teased that these issues relate to a major twist in the show's storylines. But the landscape of GG had to change, in part because teens' lives today are drastically different now than they were in the early aughts. The kids will still attend the same UES school as the original cast. He clarified:

"It is 12 years, I guess 13 years after the original. So we are in realtime from the original where we are in the show."
